A Multi-Center Educational Research Regarding Breastfeeding for Pediatrics Residents in Korea

Purpose: Pediatricians have a significant responsibility to educate mothers about the importance of breastfeeding. However, there have been minimal efforts in the courses of resident training in Korea. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the change in knowledge and attitude before and after a 4-week breastfeeding educational intervention among multicenter residents. Methods: Prospective interventional educational research was designed for residents at eight training hospitals in Korea. Institutional reviews were obtained in each hospital. The education curriculum consisted of 14 courses regarding breastfeeding theory and practice. These materials were used to teach pediatric residents for 4 weeks. Knowledge-based tests were administered before the course, and re-tests were administered after the course using different test items of similar levels. Test scores and survey responses were compared before and after the intervention. Results: A total of 73 residents (1st year 20, 2nd year 23, 3rd year 16, and 4th year residents 14) from eight training hospitals completed the intervention. Their average age was 30.3±2.9 years, 17 (23.3%) were male, 22 (30.1%) were married, and eight had more than one child of their own. The mean pre-test score was 61.8±13.4 and the mean post-test score was 78.3±7.5 (P<0.001). The inter-grade difference in the score was significant in the pre-test (P=0.005), but not significant in the post-test (P=0.155). There were more responses of obtaining confidence after the intervention (P<0.001). Conclusion: In our study, pediatric residents showed improvement in their knowledge and confidence level after 4 weeks of the breastfeeding curriculum. We research team has proposed a current-limiting superconducting DC circuit breaker that combines a High-temperature superconducting wire (HTS) with a DC circuit breaker, and secured its operation performance in our previous study via simulation. In this paper, we designed and produced an actual current-limiting superconducting DC circuit breaker, as well as analyzed its current limiting and breaking performance. In addition, the operation characteristics at diferent lengths of the HTS with increasing voltage were analyzed. The operation reliability of the proposed DC circuit breaker was demonstrated by a simulation system that was built similar to the actual system.

Background: Woori-Heukdon (KWH) is a Korean synthetic pig breed generated using Chookjin-Duroc (KCD), Chookjin-Chamdon (KCC), and their crossbreds. Currently, there is a severe lack of studies investigating the Korean breed populations including wild boars (KWB) throughout the genome. Objective: This study was performed to investigate the genetic characteristics of Korean pig populations at the genome-wide level. Methods: Using the SNP dataset derived from genotyped and downloaded datasets using the Illumina PorcineSNP60K BeadChip, we compared the genomes of 532 individuals derived from 23 pig breeds to assess the genetic diversity, inbreeding coefficient, genetic differentiation, and population structure. Results: KWB showed the lowest average expected heterozygosity (HE = 0.1904), while KWH showed the highest genetic diversity (HE = 0.02859) among Korean populations. We verified that the genetic composition of KWH, showing USD of 74.8% and KCC of 25.2% in ADMIXTURE analysis. In population structure analyses, KCC was consistently shown to be separated from other pig populations. In addition, we observed gene flow from Western pigs to a part of Chinese populations. Conclusion: This study showed that Korean native pigs, KCC have genetic differences in comparison with Chinese and Western pigs; despite some historical records and recent genetic studies, we could not find any clear evidence that KCC was significantly influenced by Chinese or Western breeds in this study. We also verified the theoretical genomic composition of KWH at the molecular level in structure analyses. To our knowledge, this is the first genomic study to investigate the genomic characteristics of KWH and KCC.
Whole-genome resequencing analysis of 20 Micro-pigs

Background Miniature pigs have been increasingly used as mammalian model animals for biomedical research because of their similarity to human beings in terms of their metabolic features and proportional organ sizes. However, despite their importance, there is a severe lack of genome-wide studies on miniature pigs. Objective In this study, we performed whole-genome sequencing analysis of 20 Micro-pigs obtained from Medi Kinetics to elucidate their genomic characteristics. Results Approximately 595 gigabase pairs (Gb) of sequence reads were generated to be mapped to the swine reference genome assembly (Sus scrofa 10.2); on average, the sequence reads covered 99.15% of the reference genome at an average of 9.6-fold coverage. We detected a total of 19,518,548 SNPs, of which 8.7% were found to be novel. With further annotation of all of the SNPs, we retrieved 144,507 nonsynonymous SNPs (nsSNPs); of these, 5968 were found in all 20 individuals used in this study. SIFT prediction for these SNPs identified that 812 nsSNPs in 402 genes were deleterious. Among these 402 genes, we identified some genes that could potentially affect traits of interest in Micro-pigs, such as RHEB and FRAS1. Furthermore, we performed runs of homozygosity analysis to locate potential selection signatures in the genome, detecting several loci that might be involved in phenotypic characteristics in Micro-pigs, such as MSTN, GDF5, and GDF11. Conclusion In this study, we identified numerous nsSNPs that could be used as candidate genetic markers with involvement in traits of interest. Furthermore, we detected putative selection footprints that might be associated with recent selection applied to miniature pigs.
한국인 주요우울장애 환자에서 혈중 ACTH, Cortisol 농도와 해밀턴 우울 평가 척도의 신체증상 항목과의 상관관계

Objectives:Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenocortical(HPA) system dysregulation plays an important role in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder. Medically unexplained somatic symptoms comprised the predominant complaints of korean patients with major depressive disorder. It might be related to dysregulation of HPA system and somatic symptoms. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between Hamilton Depression Rating Scale severity and the Plasma Adrenocorticotropic Hormone(ACTH) & Serum Cortisol level in Korean patients with major depressive disorder. Methods:Our study design was prospective. A total 111 hospitalized patients with major depressive disorder (DSM-IV) at Anam Hospital, Korea University Medical Center between Jan 2009 and May 2011 were selected. Hamilton Depression Rating Scale was measured by psychiatrist. Plasma ACTH, Serum Cortisol levels were analyzed at the time of admission. Results:There are significant correlations(p<0.05) between Hamilton Depression Rating Scale of somatic component(HAM-D 11-15 item) and Plasma ACTH and Serum Cortisol level. However, other HAM-D sub items were not significantly correlated with Plasma ACTH and Serum Cortisol level except somatic component. Conclusion:Our Study results suggest that hyperactivity of HPA axis might be correlation with somatic symptoms in korean patients with major depressive disorder.
훈증소독에 따른 서화류의 안료변색 및 pH변화 유무 조사

문화재의 생물피해 예방에 주로 활용되는 壎蒸消毒[메틸브로마이드와 에틸렌옥사이드 혼합 가스]이 書畵類에 어떤 영향을 미치는지에 대하여 간략한 調査를 실시하였다. 彩色이 있는 조선시대 古地圖와 繪畵 등 13점을 대상으로 훈증소독 前과 後의 顔料의 變色 또는 退色의 有無 그리고 종이의 pH변화 등에 대하여 測定하였다. 그 結果 旣存의 문화재 훈증소독 適用基準[가스의 湯度, 暴露시간 등]을 지킨 조건에서는 안료의 변·퇴색 현상을 발견하지 못했으며 종이의 酸性化에도 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 확인되었다. This is a brief study on the influence of fumigation (using mixed gas of methyl bromide and ethylene oxide) on old paintings. Fumigation is principally used to prevent biological damage of objects. Thirteen objects, including old colored map from Choson Dynasty and some paintings, were selected for this research. Before and after fumigation, color measurements were made and changes of pH value were measured. The result is that the fumigation did not affect on discoloration of colored area and acidity of paper, as far as the standard of application (such as concentration of gas, exposing time and ect.) of fumigation was kept.
최대밀도점 부근의 물 속에 잠겨있는 등온 수직 긴원기둥에 의한 자연대류의 실험적 연구

An experimental study of the free convection due to a isothermal vertical long cylinder immersed in water near its density extremum has been carried out. The surface temperature of the cylinder is 0℃, the aspect ratio is 4.8×10^(-2). Time-exposure photographs of the buoyancy-driven flow adjacent to a vertical cylinder in pure water are presented for adjacent water temperatures between 2.0 and 10℃. These conditions are of special interest since between 2.0 and 10℃ the buoyancy force distribution id locally bi-directional across the thermal transport region, Oweing to the density extremum at about 4℃. Resurts of the visualization show three distinct flow regions: upware flow for 2.0℃≤T_(∞)≤4.3℃, downward flow for 5.8℃≤T_(∞), dual flow for 5.6℃<T_(∞)<5.8℃ and unsteady atate flow for 4.3℃<T_(∞)≤5.6℃. The temperature range which the upward flow regions appeared is the same with those of short cylinder, but the temperature which the dualflow region and the downflow region occur is lower than those of short cylinder. Mean Nusselt numbers were smaller at unsteady state region than at the other regions. In the downward flow region, mean Nusselt number increase with increasing the surrounding temperature. In the upward flow region, mean Nusselt number increase and decrese with increasing the surrounding temperature, so there are maxmum Nusselt number at T_(∞)=3.0℃. Comparion of mean Nusselt number with past theoretical study shows good agreement

직교분해는 통계계산 분야에서 많이 사용되는 유용한 도구중의 하나인데, 각종 통계계산의 정확성과 수치안정성의 측면에서 효용성을 가지고 있다 그러나 직교분해에는 많은 분량의 계산이 요구되기 때문에 계산효율성의 향상을 위한 방안이 강구되어야 한다. 본 논문에서는 직교분해를 반복하여 실행하지 않고 전단계의 계산결과를 바탕으로 직교분해를 최신화하는 방법에 관하여 연구하였다. 한편, 최신화 방법들의 효율성을 측정하였으며 통계계산에의 응용 사례를 제시하였다. The orthogonal decomposition which is also called QR decomposition is frequently applied to the statistical computations since it maintains the numerical stability and accuracy. There are situations where computations have to be performed sequentially as variables or observations are added to or deleted from the data set. In these cases a large amount of computation is required if we compute the statistics repeatedly from the beginning. Thus, we propose the updating techniques of orthogonal decomposition and verify the computational efficiency of the proposed techniques. In addition, applications of the updating techniques to the statistical computings are suggested.
