This study was conducted to suggest appropriate methods for management of urban forest after investigating the present condition and problems of urban forests by analyzing vegetation and soil properties in urban forests in the Daejeon. On the basis of our research, Pinus rigida dominate Gyejoksan and Bomunsan. Pinus densiflora dominate Wolpyeong park and Quercus acutissima dominate Namsun park. On the basis of our result of analysis of soil chemical properties, all investigated areas have low pHs, available phosphates and exchangeable cations. They indicate that the soil of those areas have been acidifying progressively. Soil hardness measurements were conducted to know the conditions of trampled soils and the results of them show that soil hardness in Namsun park was higher than the others. This indicates that human interference affect the health of the urban forest.
Web Orientation in a Golden Orb-web Spider Nephila clavata (Araneae: Tetragnathidae)
Park, Tae-Soon,Jeon, Joong-Hwan,Lim, Hang-Kyo,Lee, Sang-Im,Choe, Jae-Chun The Korean Society for Integrative Biology 1999 Korean journal of biological sciences Vol.3 No.2
Nephila clavata, a golden orb-web spider, was studied at two different field sites with respect to web size, height, and orientation. A majority of spiders at Site 1 (a band of shrub bush) built their webs parallel or nearly parallel to the edge of the bush. Similarly, at Site 2 (near a pond), most webs were aligned with the shoreline of the pond. Among the possible determining factors for the observed patterns of web orientation, wind and light did not appear important. Instead, the movement direction of insect prey appeared largely responsible. Disproportionately more webs faced outside the bush and toward the pond than inside the bush and away from the pond at Site 1 and 2, respectively. Such trend was more apparent for larger spiders with larger webs.

Radioactive spent resin and concentrate waste powder generated from the primary system of nuclear power plants (NPPs) should be treated and disposed of in the form of solidified products or high integrity container (HIC) packages. We are preparing for the application of polymer concrete high integrity containers (PC-HICs) that has been approved for disposal and field application after going through the disposal suitability review of the repository operator and the license review process of the regulatory body. A reliable assessment of nuclide inventory in waste drum is required for the disposal of the radioactive waste drums, and the representative samples should be collected for both the indirect (non-destructive assessment based on the scaling factor, average radioactivity concentration, etc.) and direct (destructive analysis) evaluation of the difficult-to-measure (DTM) nuclides. It is important to secure the representativeness of samples for reliable and accurate evaluation of radionuclide inventory and approval of methodologies for highly radioactive waste such as spent resin and concentrate waste poser, and in order to secure the radiation safety of the sampling workers and representativeness of the samples, a remote sampling method is required with excellent convenience and safety and sufficient representativeness of the sample. The simple sampling device used in the past to collect samples for the scaling factor does not have a remote control function, so high-radiation samples must be collected within a very short time and it is difficult to obtain sufficiently representative samples due to structural characteristics that cannot collect the entire sample in the axial direction of the package. Therefore we developed concept designs for a remote sampling device that can satisfy both sample representativeness, operator convenience and safety.

Park, Mi-Hyun,Lee, Hee-Jung,Kim, Kwang-Joong,Jeon, Jae-Pil,Lee, Hye-Ja,Kim, Jun-Woo,Kim, Hung-Tae,Cha, Hyo-Soung,Kim, Cheol-Hwan,Choi, Kang-Yell,Park, Chan,Oh, Berm-Seok,Kim, Ku-Chan Korea Genome Organization 2006 Genomics & informatics Vol.4 No.4
We sequenced 1,841 BAC clones by terminal sequencing, and 1,830 of these clones were characterized with regard to their human chromosomal location and gene content using Korean BAC library constructed at the Korean Science (KCGS). Sequence analyses of the 1,830 BAC clones was performed for chromosomal assignment: 1,144 clones were assigned to a single chromosome, 190 clones apparently assigned to more than one chromosome, and 496 clones to no chromosome. Evaluating gene content of the 1,144 BAC clones, we found that 706 clones represented 1,069 genes of which 415 genes existed in the BAC clones covering the full sequence of the gene, 180 genes covering a $50%{\sim}99%$, and 474 genes covering less than 50% of the gene coverage. The estimated covering size of the KBAC clones was 73,379 kilobases (kb), in total corresponding to 2.3% of haploid human genome sequence. The identified BAC clones will be a public genomic resource for mapped clones for diagnostic and functional studies by Korean scientists and investigators worldwide.

Purpose: Infection with Helicobacter pylori is an important risk factor for gastric cancer in humans. We compared the clinicopathologic features of gastric cancer patients based on H. pylori infection. Materials and Methods: We prospectively studied 155 patients who had gastric cancer and underwent gastrectomies in 1 hospital in Korea. We examined H. pylori infections using the rapid urease test (RUT) with gastrectomy specimens and collected clinical and pathologic data. Results: The number of H. pylori infections based on the RUT was 137 (88%). The H. pylori-negative group was significantly associated with AGC and tumor histology. H. pylori infection was significantly correlated with type I/IIa in EGC and type III/IV/V in AGC. AGC was significantly correlated with larger tumor size, lymphatic invasion, perineural invasion, and H. pylori infection based on univariate and multivariate analyses. Conclusions: We report the prevalence of H. pylori based on the RUT in gastric cancer patients. H. pylori infection influences the tumor histology, progression, and growth type of gastric cancer.
Osteomyelitis in an Osteopathia Striata with Cranial Sclerosis Patient
Park, Heung-Chul,Kim, Hang-Gul,Kim, Yong-Hwan,Kim, Joo-Hwan,Kim, Moon-Young,Kim, Kyung-Wook Korean Association of Maxillofacial Plastic and Re 2014 Maxillofacial Plastic Reconstructive Surgery Vol.36 No.6
Osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis (OS-CS) is characterized by linear bone dysplasia at the long bone radiographically and sclerotic change at the cranium. The purpose of this case report is to study the symptoms and treatments of osteomyelitis in a patient with OS-CS. A 41-year-old patient had pus discharge from a fistula at the mental region and increase in radiolucencies with sequestra in panoramic radiograph images. Computed tomography (CT) as well as radiograph images for the whole skeleton were taken. The patient was diagnosed with OS-CS. Sequestrectomy and fistulectomy were performed. The patient recovered and no relapse occurred within six months after surgery. For diagnosis of OS-CS, CT and additional radiograph images for the whole skeleton are required. Because of the increased bone density, this patient is prone to relapse after sequestrectomy. Therefore, the surgeon must minimize trauma with the least incision and exfoliation, and preoperative antibiotics.

Hang Ju Cho,Jeong Soo Kim,Kee Hwan Kim,Chang Hyeok Ahn,Woo Chan Park,Se Jeong Oh,Sang Seol Jung,Keun Woo Lim,Seock Ah Im 대한암학회 2003 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.35 No.2
Purpose: The PTEN gene, a novel tumor suppressor,is localized to chromosome 10q23.3 and shares extensivehomology with the cytoskeletal protein, tensin. Ahigh frequency of mutations at the PTEN locus has beendescribed in a variety of neoplasms including breastcancer and Cowden Disease. However, the role of PTENalterations and its association with clinicopathologicalfactors have not been well established. We investigatedthe relationship between the PTEN expression and clinicopathologicalfactors.Materials and Methods: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embeddedtissues from 105 women with breast cancer wereevaluated for the PTEN expression and were scoredsemi-quantitatively based on staining intensity and distribution. Results were statistically compared with clinicopathologicalfactors. Results: Forty-seven (45%) of the 105 breast cancershad a loss of the PTEN expression. In the recurrent group,19 of 32 (59%) patients showed a loss of the PTEN expression, whereas in the non-recurrent group, only 28 of 73(38%) patients showed a loss of the PTEN expression. Theloss of PTEN expression correlated with estrogen receptors(ER) (p=0.027), recurrence (p=0.046), HER-2/neuoverexpression (p=0.016), disease-free survival (p=0.0163),and overall survival (p=0.0357). In particular, when HER-2/neu was overexpressed, the overall survival rate correlatedwith the loss of PTEN expression statistically(p=0.0454), whereas when HER-2/neu was negative, therewas no correlation (p=0.9808). Progesterone receptor (PR)and disease stage had no relationship with the PTENexpression. Conclusion: Our results support that PTEN plays a roleas a tumor suppressor in breast cancer and is a prognosticfactor in predicting recurrence. Background/Aims: Currently, a new over-the-scope clip (OTSC) system has been introduced. This system has been used forgastrointestinal perforations and fistulas in other countries. The aim of our study is to examine the therapeutic success rate ofendoscopic treatment using the OTSC system in Korea. Methods: This was a multicenter prospective study. A total of seven endoscopists at seven centers performed this procedure. Results: A total of 19 patients were included, with gastrointestinal leakages from anastomosis sites, fistulas, or esophageal perforationsdue to Boerhaave’s syndrome. Among these, there were three gastrojejunostomy sites, three esophagojejunostomy sites, fouresophagogastrostomy sites, one esophagocolonostomy site, one jejuno-jejunal site, two endoscopic full thickness resection site closures, one Boerhaave’s syndrome, two esophago-bronchial fistulas, one gastrocolonic fistula, and one colonopseudocyst fistula. The size of theleakage ranged from 5 to 30 mm. The median procedure time was 16 min. All cases were technically successful. Complete closure ofthe leak was achieved in 14 of 19 patients using OTSC alone. Conclusions: The OTSC system is a safe and effective method for the management of gastrointestinal leakage, especially in cases ofanastomotic leakage after surgery.
