Brief comparison of the mechanism of modern medicine and traditional medicine in neuronal cell death

Medicine has a past, a present, and will have a future; the same can be said for many diseases. Even with the surprising development of modern medicine, traditional medicine, especially eastern Asian traditional medicines still exist and are widely used in those regions. But modern medicine and western pacific traditional medicines have different theories and applications for the same disease. In this review, traditional medical theory, used together with modern medicine, can be combined to shed light on the area of neuronal death.

Shenqi-wan, Oriental herbal medicine formulation, has traditionally been used for the treatment of delayed mental and physical development in children, complications of diabetes, and glomerulonephritis. In the present study, we investigated the protective effect of the aqueous extract of Shenqi-wan and its fractions against N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-induced exitotoxicity in rat hippocampal CA1 neurons. Fractions were elucidated at 0 - 10 min, 11 - 20 min, and 21 - 30 min by using gravity column chromatography method. In the present results, treatment with NMDA on cultured hippocampal slices induced neuronal death in the hippocampal CA1 region. Pretreatment with the Shenqi-wan did not exerted protective effect, however its fractions suppressed NMDA-induced neuronal damage. The fraction elucidated at 11 - 20 min showed the most potent protective effect. These results revealed that effective substances of the Shenqi-wan against NMDA-induced excitotoxicity may exist mainly in the fraction elucidated at 11 - 20 min.
Efficient Management Design for Swimming Exercise Treatment

Exercise-mediated physical treatment has attracted much recent interest. In particular, swimming is a representative exercise treatment method recommended for patients experiencing muscular and cardiovascular diseases. The present study sought to design a swimming-based exercise treatment management system. A survey questionnaire was completed by participants to assess the prevalence of muscular and cardiovascular diseases among adult males and females participating in swimming programs at sport centers in metropolitan regions of country. Using the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique, weighted values of indices were determined, to maximize participant clarity. A patient management system model was devised using information technology. The favorable results are evidence of the validity of this approach. Additionally, the swimming-based exercise management system can be supplemented together with analyses of weighted values considering connectivity between established indices.

Emphysematous pyelonephritis is an uncommon serious suppurative infection, characterized by the production of intrarenal and perirenal gas and can occur in patients with diabetes mellitus or urinary obstruction. We report our experience with successful management of a case of emphysematous pyelonephritis which occurred in 43 years-old diabetic woman with sepsis and liver cirrhosis. Left nephrectomy was carried out to cure septic crisis.

N/A Splanchnic nerve block is effective in relief of upper abdominal cancer pain. But we often get confused at the unexpected complaints of pain accompanying a metastatic of referred ori- gin i#n spite of the precise block under image intensifier. We could found aut a thermographic change from the diffuse hyperemission state of abdo- men before the block to the localized state after the block. Itay be helpful in differentiating objectively the accuracy of the block at the unexpected complaints of pain by using thermography before and after the block.
Change of Blood Component in Rat by Cell Wall Protein from Vibrio vulnificus

Vibrio vulnificus, Escherichia coli 및Salmonella typhimurium의 세포벽에서 cell wall protein (CWP)를 추출하여 phosphate-buffered saline에 녹여 rat에 주사하였다. 일정 시간후 CWP에 의한 rat에서의 혈액 성분들 [white blood cell(wbc), red blood cell (rbc), platelet (PLT), reticulocyte (RETI), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), blood glucose]의 변화를 측정하였다. CWP에 의한 활성 측정 결과, WBC는 증가하였지만 PLT는 삼소하였고 RBC, RETI, BUN 및 blood glucose는 거의 변화가 없었다.
여자 초등학생의 신체활동과 심폐체력 및 신체구성 그리고 심혈관 위험인자와의 연관성

강현식, 하창덕, 홍혜련, 권훈겸, 김성희, 우상구. 여자 초등학생의 신체활동량 및 강도와 심폐체력, 신체구성, 심혈관 위험인자와의 상관성. 운동과학, 제20권 제4호. 389-396, 2011. 본 연구의 목적은 기존의 횡단적 연구에서 비만 및 대사증후군의 예방 및 치료를 위해 제시된 13,000보수의 적정보수를 목표로 12주간의 신체활동 중재를 실시한 후, 신체활동량 및 강도와 심폐체력, 비만지표, 심혈관 위험인자의 상관성을 검증하는 것이었다. 본 연구의 대상자는 초등학교 여학생24명(11.79±0.78세)으로 하였고, 12주 신체활동 중재 전과 후에 신장, 체중, 체질량지수, 체지방율, 허리둘레, 최대산소섭취량, 중성지방, 총 콜레스테롤, 고밀도지단백 콜레스테롤, 혈당을 측정하여 분석하였으며, 12주간 1일 13,000보수의 신체활동을 하도록 권고하였다. 연구결과, 12주간의 신체활동 중재를 통해 신장, 체중, BMI, 심폐체력의 유의한 증가가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 신체활동량과 신체구성, 심폐체력, 심혈관질환 위험인자와의 상관성 분석 결과, 신체활동량은 최대산소섭취량과 수축기혈압과 유의한 상관성이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 신체활동 강도와 신체구성, 심폐체력, 심혈관질환 위험인자와의 상관성 분석 결과, 신장과 중강도 및 고강도 신체활동이 상관성이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 결론적으로 초등학교 여학생의 경우 심폐체력증진과 키 성장 자극 그리고 비만 및 심혈관질환 위험인자의 효과적인 개선을 위해서는 중등도 이상의 규칙적인 운동을 포함하여 상당한 수준의 신체활동량(예, 1일 13,000보수)이 필요하다는 사실을 의미하는 것으로 판단된다. The purpose of current study was to investigate the correlations of physical activity with cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), body composition, and cardiovascular risk factors in elementary school girls. A total of 24 girls (11.79±0.78 years) voluntarily participated in the physical activity intervention stuy. Before and after the intervention, all the participants underwent a series of measurements including body composition, obesity indices, CRF, and cardiovascular risk factors. Then each participant was invited to participate in a physical activity intervention targeting at 13,000 steps/day, which was predetermined in our preliminary study, for 12 weeks. All participants worn the Life-corder accelerometer to monitor their daily physical activities including its volume and intensity. Height, weight, body mass index, CRF were increased significantly after the 12-week PA intervention. PA volume was positively related to CRF and systolic blood pressure (SBP). Moderate and high PA intensities were positively relate to height growth. In conclusion, the current findings of the study suggest that substantial amount of physical activity (i.e., accumulated 13,000 steps per day) including regular exercise with moderate or higher intensities would be necessary for the improvements of in CRF, obesity indices, and cardiovascular risk factors as well as height growth.
