Penetrating head injury is a serious open cranial injury. In civilians, it is often caused by non-missile, low velocity flying objects that penetrate the skull through a weak cranial structure, forming intracranial foreign bodies. The intracranial foreign body can be displaced due to its special quality, shape, and location. In this paper, we report a rare case of right-to-left displacement of an airgun lead bullet after transorbital entry into the skull complicated by posttraumatic epilepsy, as a reminder to colleagues that intracranial metal foreign bodies maybe displaced intraoperatively. In addition, we have found that the presence of intracranial metallic foreign bodies may be a factor for the posttraumatic epilepsy, and their timely removal appears to be beneficial for epilepsy control.

Hui, K N,Yin, Cui-Lei,Hui, K S,Lee, J Y,Li, M,Lee, S K,Tsui, K L,Chao, C Y H,Kwong, C W American Scientific Publishers 2012 Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Vol.12 No.4

Crystalline Co3O4 nanowire arrays freely supported on Ni foam are successfully synthesized using a template-free method. The effects of reaction time, concentration of reactants, and temperature on the morphology of the nanowires are studied. The results indicate that uniform Co3O4 nanowires could be synthesized at 90 degrees C, and a transformation of the samples' morphology from nanoparticles to nanowires to microrods is observed by controlling the concentration of the reactants. The well-ordered nanowires synthesized under the selected reaction conditions are composed of spinel Co3O4 with diameters of 500-580 nm and lengths of 6-8 microm. These nanowires show good catalytic activity for the ozone catalytic oxidation of toluene.

Background A large proportion of eukaryote nuclear genomes is composed of repetitive DNA. Tracing the dynamics of repetitive elements in the genomes of related taxa can reveal important information about their phylogenic relationships as well as traits that have become distinct to a lineage. Objective Study the genomic abundance and chromosomal location of repetitive DNA in Capsicum annuum L. to understand the repeat dynamics. Method We quantified repeated DNA content in the C. annuum genome using the RepeatExplorer pipeline. Results About 42% of the C. annuum genome dataset comprised repetitive elements. Of these, 0.011, 0.98, 3.09, and 0.024% represented high and low confidence satellite repeats, putative long-terminal repeats (LTRs), and rDNA sequences, respectively. One novel high confidence 167-bp satellite repeat with a genomic proportion of 0.011%, Ca167TR, was identified. Furthermore, FISH with Ca167TR on metaphase chromosomes of C. annuum revealed signals in the subtelomeric regions of the short and long arms of chromosome 3 and 4, respectively. Conclusion Further understanding of the origin and associated functions of Ca167TR and other repeats in Capsicum will give us insights into the genomic relationships and functions of the genome.

Background/Aims: We aimed to investigate the correlation between a disintegrin and metalloprotease with thrombospondin motif 2 (ADAMTS-2) and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) in clinical human cirrhotic tissues. Methods: The liver tissues of 24 patients (16 cases with cirrhotic portal hypertension as the cirrhosis group and eight cases with healthy livers as the normal group) were collected. Immunohistochemistry and Western blots were performed to evaluate the protein expression levels of ADAMTS-2 and TGF-β1. Western blots for other key mediators of cirrhotic progression, including SMAD2, SMAD3, TGF-β receptor II (TGFβRII), matrix metalloproteinases 2 (MMP2), and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases 2 (TIMP2), were also performed. Results: Cirrhotic tissues showed higher percentages of collagen. The protein expression levels of ADAMTS-2 and TGF-β1 were significantly higher in the cirrhotic group as compared to the matched normal group (p<0.05), and there was a positive correlation between these two proteins (r=0.862, p<0.01). The protein expressions of MMP2, TIMP2, and TGFβRII, as well as the phosphorylated forms of SMAD2 and SMAD3, were significant higher in the cirrhotic group (p<0.01 or p<0.05). Conclusions: These findings suggested that ADAMTS-2 and TGF-β1 may play important roles in the pathogenesis of human cirrhosis; specifically, TGF-β1 may induce the expression of ADAMTS-2 through the TGFβ/SMAD pathway. A newly developed tridimensional neural network (TRDNN) has been utilized to represent the phaseequilibria of six polyethylene glycol (PEG)-inorganic salt aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs).18 data setstotaling 108 experimental data in the temperature range (298.2–318.2 K) were categorized into training, test and validation sets in order to teach the model about the input-output relationships and validate itspredictive ability. The optimal configuration of the model was found to be {5, [3,4,5], 3} and the systemerror for the training process was determined as 0.0055. Results indicate that the TRDNN model hasbetter prediction performance as compared to the two-dimensional model. The standard deviationscorresponding to three data sets for the TRDNN model were 0.0057, 0.0068 and 0.0055, while those forthe two-dimensional model were 0.0065, 0.0078 and 0.0062, respectively. Moreover, it incorporates themolecular weight of polymer, salt type and temperature in one model and can reflect the effects of thesefactors on the phase behavior of these ATPSs correctly.

This paper reports an improved headspace gas chromatographic (HS-GC) technique for thedetermination of oxalate content in bleaching effluents. The method is based on the redox reactionbetween potassium iodate and oxalate, from which the carbon dioxide is generated and measured by HSGC. The results showed that the reaction in a sulfuric acid solution (0.05 mol/L) was complete in 35 minat 95 ℃. The RSD of the method in the repeatability testing was less than 4.5%, the LOQ was 0.35 mg, andthe recovery ranged from 95 to 103%. The present method is simpler, more reliable, and more practicalcompared to the methods reported previously.

Background: Gastrodia elata Blume is a saprophytic perennial plant in the Orchidaceae family, because of its agricultural and medicinal effectiveness, researchers focus on its genome and chemical components. However, cytogenetic information based on the chromosome structure and composition to construct chromosomal backbone for genome sequencing research and for the development and breeding of plants is very limited. Methods and Results: We determined the metaphase chromosome composition of the G. elata genome by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using 5S and 45S rDNAs and telomeric repeat probes. The nuclear genome of G. elata was organized into 2 n = 36, with relatively small (2.71 - 5.50㎛)chromosomes that showed gradual decrease in size. Conglutination phenomenon was observed among the metaphase chromosomes, and it was distinguished from that in other plant metaphase chromosome spreads. One pair of signal was detected for each 5S and 45S rDNA in the pericentromeric region and interstitial region on the short arm of chromosomes 10 and 4, respectively, and telomeric DNA signals were detected in the terminal region of most chromosomes. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first FISH chromosome composition result in G. elata and could be useful in more comprehensive molecular cytogenetic and genomic analyses as well as breeding programs of the medicinal plant G. elata.
Modeling of the phase equilibria of aqueous two-phase systems using three-dimensional neural network
Hui-Chao Lv,Da Yong Tian 한국화학공학회 2017 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.34 No.1
A three-dimensional neural network model has been designed for representing the phase equilibrium data related to aqueous two-phase systems. The polyvinyl pyrrolidone/phosphate/water system was selected as the model system to demonstrate the point of interest. The collected experimental data were categorized into two subsets, training and validation sets, not only to find the suitable network configuration but also to prevent the overfitting problem. Meanwhile, the weight comparison method was proposed to optimize the three-dimensional neural net. The results of accuracy comparison indicate that it outperforms the two-dimensional neural network on some details and can further enhance the calculation accuracy of the phase equilibrium data for these investigated aqueous two-phase systems. The development of the neural network in the three-dimensional space should be a research project of concern.

This paper reports on a headspace gas chromatographic method (HS-GC) for the determination of residual formaldehyde in formaldehyde related polymer latexes. The method is based on the reaction between formaldehyde and borohydride in a sodium hydroxide solution (1 mol/L), in which formaldehyde is quantitatively converted to methanol within 30 min at 90 8C and then determined by HS-GC. The results showed that the repeatability of the method had a relative standard deviation of less than 5.0%; the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 17.3 mg, and the recovery ranged from 96.2–102%. The present method is simple, rapid, and accurate.
