Genomic and phylogenetic analysis of Ceramium cimbricum (Ceramiales, Rhodophyta) from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans supports the naming of a new invasive Pacific entity Ceramium sungminbooi sp. nov.

Hughey, Jeffery R.,Boo, Ga Hun de Gruyter 2016 Botanica marina Vol.59 No.4

Abstract

The filamentous marine red algaCeramium cimbricumwas described from Denmark, but the name has since been applied to populations worldwide. To determine ifC. cimbricumfrom the Pacific is conspecific withC. cimbricumfrom the Atlantic, we (1) deciphered an authenticrbcL sequence for the lectotype specimen ofC. cimbricum, (2) performed phylogenetic analysis on Pacific and AtlanticC. cimbricum, and (3) assembled and analyzed the complete mitochondrial and plastid genomes of specimens ofC. cimbricumfrom Denmark and California. The lectotype sequence ofC. cimbricumwas unique and fully resolved with other AtlanticCeramiumspecies, however, the specimens ofC. cimbricumfrom Denmark, Norway, California, Oregon, and Korea formed a clade with Pacific species. The plastid and mitochondrial genomes ofC. cimbricumfrom Denmark and California were similar in length and gene content, differing by only 67 SNPs and nine gaps for the plastid, and by 100 SNPs and 31 gaps for the mitochondrial genomes. These results support the continued application of the nameC. cimbricumto specimens from Denmark, and warrant the naming of a new species,Ceramium sungminbooisp. nov., native to Asia and introduced to the northeastern Pacific and Europe.

      • Magnetic field-temperature phase diagram of multiferroic [(CH3)2NH2]Mn(HCOO)3

        Clune, A. J.,Hughey, K. D.,Lee, C.,Abhyankar, N.,Ding, X.,Dalal, N. S.,Whangbo, M.-H.,Singleton, J.,Musfeldt, J. L. American Physical Society 2017 Physical Review B Vol.96 No.10

We combined pulsed field magnetization and first-principles spin-density calculations to reveal the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram and spin state character in multiferroic [(CH3)(2)NH2]Mn(HCOO)(3). Despite similarities with the rare earth manganites, the phase diagram is analogous to other Mn-based quantum magnets with a 0.31 T spin flop, a 15.3 T transition to the fully polarized state, and short-range correlations that persist above the ordering temperature. The experimentally accessible saturation field opens the door to exploration of the high-field phase.

      • Community Psychology Perspectives on Social Capital Theory, Research, and Application

        Perkins, Douglas D.,Fisher, Adrian,Butterworth, Iain,Hughey, Joseph,Perkins, Douglas D. 한국국제지역사회개발학회 2001 地域社會開發學術誌 Vol.11 No.1

This paper uses the concept of social capital to apply relevant theory, research, and intervention approaches in the field of community psychology to community development. It is argued that social capital would benefit both conceptually and practically from a more precise definition and attention to construct and predictive validity. We propose that social capital is most usefully defined in terms of informal neighboring behavior and organized citizen participation or collective self-help, but that other psychological constructs such as sense of community, empowerment, social support, communitarianism, place attachment, and community satisfaction, pride, and confidence are also important catalysts and effects of social capital. This paper is part of a nascent interdisciplinary collaboration between the Society for Community Research and Action(SCRA: the professional organization of community psychologists) and the Community Development Society. Community Psychology(CP) and Community Development(CD)? two related but, for the most part, mutually ignorant fields? have much to gain from exploring opportunities for interdisciplinary and organizational communication and collaboration. The Community Development Society (CDS) has much to offer SCRA especially in terms of applied expertise, SCRA has much to offer CDS especially in terms of research and evaluation expertise, and both organizations have much to offer in terms of theories relevant to each other's work. One such theory is "social capital(SC)", the norms and networks of "civil society" that facilitate cooperative action among citizens and their institutions(Coleman, 1988; Putnam, 2000). SC has been less popular in CP than in CD perhaps because, for many years, community psychologists had already been carefully studying a variety of community-focused behaviors and attitudes related to SC. We therefore may be skeptical of a new term from outside the discipline which seems to cover ground we feel we already know quite well and for which there appears to be no clear, precise, and agreed upon definition. Possibly even more than the terms empowerment and sustainability, SC has become a conceptually vague buzzword, which is being used by many different people to mean many different things or, in some cases, to mean very little. The other concern we have is that the promotion of SC is being coopted by anti-government neo-conservatives as a means of reducing public spending on even critically needed social services. For example, the Social Capital Enhancement Act, proposed a few years ago in the Utah State legislature, would require government workers to turn away all first requests for services, no matter how legitimate, and forces those in need to seek those services in the already overburdened private community service sector. Only if that fails can citizens go back to state government for help. And so it is tribute to our interest in CD and our desire for interdisciplinary discourse and understanding that we open our minds and our data to the concept of SC.
