        Effects of chemical composition of carbonaceous powder on morphology and thermal properties of graphite blocks

        Two kinds of mesocarbon microbeads (MCMBs) with different chemical composition have been synthesized. The MCMBs were molded and heat treated at temperatures above 2000 °C to obtain graphite blocks. The effects of chemical composition of MCMBs on the pore morphology, carbon texture and thermal properties of the derived graphite blocks have been explored. The pore morphology was investigated by small angle X-ray scattering technique and a graphitization-induced morphology transition was observed. When the graphitic crystallite size exceeded a threshold value, the association of crystallites and migration of randomly distributed pores took place extensively. For the graphite blocks made of MCMBs which had light components with higher aromaticity value, the growth of crystallites caused a significant enhancement in thermal conductivity for the specimens. However, for the other kind of MCMBs, their light components tended to form solid porous carbon texture after graphitization, and the thermal conductivity coefficients of their graphite blocks could only increase slightly as crystallites grew. It was suggested that the thermal resistance at the granule’s boundary became noticeable in the latter case and thus the growth of thermal conductivity coefficients was prominently hindered.

        CdS/CdSe co-sensitized brookite H:TiO<sub>2</sub> nanostructures: Charge carrier dynamics and photoelectrochemical hydrogen generation

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, we have synthesized CdS/CdSe co-sensitized brookite TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanostructures with hydrogen doping (H:TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/CdS/CdSe) in a facile solution reaction and studied their PEC performances. Compared to undoped brookite TiO<SUB>2</SUB>, the H:TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/CdS/CdSe composites exhibit much enhanced photocurrent generation, which originates from the improved charge transfer kinetics endowed by hydrogen doping and sensitization. Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impendence spectroscopy (EIS) are employed to explore the charge transfer dynamics between sensitizers and TiO<SUB>2</SUB> and charge carrier kinetics at the semiconductor/electrolyte interface. According to the analytical results, sensitizations of TiO<SUB>2</SUB> are found to enhance the charge separation efficiency. Besides, the hydrogen doping into TiO<SUB>2</SUB> generates oxygen vacancy states, providing additional charge transfer pathway and prohibiting charge recombination, beneficial for enhancing the PEC performances as well. Based on the charge dynamics data, we further develop charge transfer models for TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/CdS/CdSe and H:TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/CdS/CdSe.         This paper describes an efficient methodology for Database development for aircraft design based on parameters. This methodology can provide prediction of related parameters when insufficient data is known for an arbitrary aircraft. By using this methodology, aircraft performance, propulsion and aerodynamic data can be rapidly calculated. Fighter and attack aircraft are focused in this Database development. The methodology is firstly implemented based on known parameters which are collected from public domain sources and the approximation library is performed to predict related unknown data using approximation models. By using this database, the analysis of performance, aerodynamics and propulsion of aircraft are performed based on empirical and theoretical equations. The necessary codes for the analysis were developed and validated. In this study, database with forty-three different types of fighter and attack aircrafts has been constructed to demonstrate the feasibility, effectiveness and rapidness of the database development methodology.

        The effect of ferulic acid ethyl ester on leptin-induced proliferation and migration of aortic smooth muscle cells

        Leptin is a peptide hormone, which has a central role in the regulation of body weight; it also exerts many potentially atherogenic effects. Ferulic acid ethyl ester (FAEE) has been approved for antioxidant properties. The aim of this study was to investigate whether FAEE can inhibit the atherogenic effects of leptin and the possible molecular mechanism of its action. Both of cell proliferation and migration were measured when the aortic smooth muscle cell (A10 cell) treated with leptin and/or FAEE. Phosphorylated p44/42MAPK, cell cycle-regulatory protein (for example, cyclin D1, p21, p27), β-catenin and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) proteins levels were also measured. Results demonstrated that leptin (10, 100 ng ml−1) significantly increased the proliferation of cells and the phosphorylation of p44/42MAPK in A10 cells. The proliferative effect of leptin was significantly reduced by the pretreatment of U0126 (0.5 μM), a MEK inhibitor, in A10 cells. Meanwhile, leptin significantly increased the protein expression of cyclin D1, p21, β-catenin and decreased the expression of p27 in A10 cells. In addition, leptin (10 ng ml−1) significantly increased the migration of A10 cells and the expression of MMP-9 protein. Above effects of leptin were significantly reduced by the pretreatment of FAEE (1 and 10 μM) in A10 cells. In conclusion, FAEE exerts multiple effects on leptin-induced cell proliferation and migration, including the inhibition of p44/42MAPK phosphorylation, cell cycle-regulatory proteins and MMP-9, thereby suggesting that FAEE may be a possible therapeutic approach to the inhibition of obese vascular disease.

      • Integration of Independent Component Analysis with Near Infrared Spectroscopy for Evaluation of Tea Quality

        Tea is a widely consumed drink among elderly people in Chinese population. The consumption is growing in different ages because of the founding of many handy-tea-drink stores in Taiwan. However, determination of tea quality is still mainly based on sensory evaluation, which lacks of objectivity in science. Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, a rapid nondestructive inspection method, has been widely applied for evaluation of internal quality of agricultural products. Because an NIR spectrum of a mixture on first approximation is the linear addition of individual spectra of the constituents in the mixture, such a spectrum thus can be regarded as an assembly of ‘blind sources’ as the proportion of constituents in the samples remains unknown. Independent component analysis (ICA), a multiuse statistical approach originally used to implement ‘blind source separation’ in signal processing, is capable of disassembling the mixture’s signals with only a small loss of information and does not require any additional information from the source. To date, ICA has not been applied to analysis of the internal quality of tea. Therefore, the objective of the current study was to examine internal quality of tea in terms of quantitative approaches using NIR spectroscopy combined with ICA technique. The internal quality-related indices of tea, including tea polyphenols (TP), free amino acids (FAA), water, and pH value were evaluated simultaneously. The results show that ICA with NIR has the potential to be adopted as an effective method for evaluating internal quality of tea.

        Data Hiding for HTML Files Using Character Coding Table and Index Coding Table

        A data hiding scheme in HTML files is presented in this paper. Web pages are a very popular medium for broadcasting information and knowledge nowadays, and web pages are a good way to achieve the goal of secret message delivery because the different HTML coding codes will render the same screen in any of the popular browsers. The proposed method utilizes the HTML special space codes and sentence segmentation to conceal secret messages into a HTML file. The experimental results show that the stego HTML file generated by the proposed method is imperceptible. Also, the proposed method can conceal one more secret bit in every between-word location.

        Effect of Caponization on Muscle Composition, Shear Value, ATP Related Compounds and Taste Appraisal in Taiwan Country Chicken Cockerels

        An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of caponization on the muscle composition, ATP-related compounds, the shear values, the taste panel scores and the muscle fiber areas of Taiwan country chicken cockerels. At 10 wks of age, cockerels were divided into two groups: caponized and untreated. Birds were fed grower and finisher diets ad libitum in an eighteen-week experimental period. Results showed that capons contained significantly greater muscle fat content, less breast and thigh muscle moisture content, shear value and muscle fiber area (p<0.05) than those of intact birds. However, neither treatment groups differed significantly (p>0.05) in breast and thigh muscle protein content. Compared with the intact birds, the capons contained significantly (p<0.05) less muscle ash content in the breasts, but did not differ significantly (p>0.05) in thigh muscle ash content. The breast muscle IMP and ATP+ADP+AMP+IMP contents in the intact birds were significantly (p<0.05) higher than those in the capons. The intact birds had significantly (p<0.05) higher ATP and AMP contents than did the capons as well as significantly (p<0.05) less ADP and inosine (HxR) contents in the thigh and breast muscles. The Hypoxanthine (Hx) content of the thighs in the intact birds was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that in the capons; however, there was an adverse effect on the breast muscle Hx content. The breast muscle K value in the intact birds was significantly (p<0.05) lower than that in the capons. The capons produced significantly (p<0.05) higher taste panel scores than did the intact birds for both flavor and juiciness of thigh muscle as well as for flavor and tenderness of breast muscle.
