This dissertation explores textual junctures such as this in the compositional processes of James Joyce, Djuna Barnes, Mina Loy and Ezra Pound that illuminate how these modernists negotiated the fraught position of being an author in the early twentieth century. This approach marks a departure from conventional textual criticism as I look at the intersections between textual criticism and literary theory, demonstrating the effects different theories can have on our understanding of textual criticism. Recent innovations in textual scholarship influenced by poststructuralist theorists allow me to uncover and describe the extent to which each of these four authors construct a self-conscious version of authorship in relation to their larger Modernist aims. This examination reveals how Joyce, Barnes, Loy, and Pound were subject to numerous outside influences, personal insecurities and preoccupations throughout the writing process, indicating their desires to both manipulate and participate in the modernist project of innovation and experimentation. The first chapter addresses the evolution of Joyce's pre-writing, drafting and revising processes as a form of textual gossip. Joyce excised material from much of his early writing, controlling his work as a gossiper controls rumors. As he became increasingly more inclusive in his writing process, he also reflected a more positive regard for gossip as a similarly inclusive process. The second chapter examines the revision and editing of Ryder, Nightwood, and The Antiphon. Barnes increasingly sought legitimacy for her work by subjecting it to the conventionalizing editing of T. S. Eliot and Emily Holmes Coleman. In the third chapter, I interrogate Pound's poetic practices and his status as an expatriate in order to reveal how Pound felt as an exile to his own writing. The fourth chapter analyzes Loy's marginal status in the modernist canon, arguing that she created a persona through her public presentation of herself in her poems that is responsible for her constant and perpetual rediscovery.

This dissertation treats modernist texts as material objects created by a collectivity of agents: writers, editors, publishers, and patrons “laboring in common” (from the Latin, collaborare) to bring the book to life and to circulate it to the reading public. Many modernist collaborators are “amateurs”: friends and family whose work on behalf of the text exemplifies my notion of “Do-It-Yourself” modernism, of a field of production that relies on small presses, little magazines, and individual patrons. This amateur material base is especially the province of women, a phenomenon contributing to the feminization, and thus the disparagement, of the productive sphere by writers such as Pound and Joyce who both depend upon and denigrate the women who publish and patronize them. As women enter the field of literary production in greater numbers, an anxiety about women in the marketplace is displaced onto anxieties about the individual author's enmeshment in collaborative production practices. My dissertation focuses on the collaborative networks surrounding female authors in order to investigate how women in modernism negotiate the divide between authorial autonomy and collaborative production. The metaphors of marriage, midwifery, and childbirth haunt these collaborations, as women writers and their collaborators search for a language which can account for the differences between the writing and production of texts, while acknowledging the shared labor that creates the modernist book.

This thesis contributes to an understanding of the pathways of civic influence into the least dangerous branch of American politics -- the Judicial Branch. Specifically, this thesis examines the influence of the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy -- a conservative and libertarian legal network of more than 40,000 members -- on twelve of the most salient Supreme Court decisions concerning federalism and the separation of powers over the last three decades. As a special case, it also examines Federalist Society influence on a subset of controversial Executive Branch policies issued under George W. Bush. To understand the unique nature of this civic group's influence, it establishes the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy as a kind of epistemic community; i.e., a network of legal professionals and civic leaders bound together and shaped by a set of beliefs about law, the nature of government, and constitutional interpretation. Using this framework, it proceeds to demonstrate how individual members of the Federalist Society acted as "cognitive baggage handlers," carrying these shared ideas into their roles as legal professionals (judges, academics, litigators, government officials). Finally, it evaluates the extent to which these actors were successful or not in diffusing their ideas into law and policy. It finds that while there is substantial evidence of Federalist Society influence in the areas of federalism and separation of powers, overall the results have been mixed. The final chapter examines why that was and speculates as to the conditions that might facilitate and frustrate epistemic community influence more generally.

Urban and suburban development has expanded beyond the traditional core of major cities. Preservation of open spaces in metropolitan landscapes provides aesthetic and recreational values for humans. However, white-tailed deer ( Odocoileus virginianus) populations in North America are overabundant in many suburban areas. This trend is directly related to changes to habitat as a result of landscape alteration and fragmentation caused by humans. This close relationship between humans and wildlife increases the risk for zoonotic disease transmission from many vectors, such as mosquitoes and ticks. There is limited research for suburban deer examining the relationship between zoonotic prevalence and ecological factors, such as habitat. Additionally, an extensive search of deer ecology and wildlife disease literature revealed no peer-reviewed publications of zoonoses from suburban white-tailed deer. From 1995--99, I conducted a zoonotic serological survey of live-captured (tagged and radio-collared) and culled deer from Chicago, Illinois forest preserves for Jamestown Canyon (JC) and LaCrosse (LAC) encephalitis viruses, toxoplasmosis, and leptospirosis. The prevalence of sera samples collected from suburban white-tailed deer (live-captured and culled) was 55.9% for Toxoplasma gondii (n=443), 16.2% for Leptospira spp. (n=444), 38.1% for JC virus (n=404), and 6.7% for LAC virus (n=404). Prevalence was higher for adult deer for all pathogens sampled except Leptospira spp. Prevalence also was less likely in males for JC virus. A higher prevalence for T. gondii and JC virus was detected at Des Plaines (DP) and prevalence for Leptospira spp. was less likely at DP. Differences in year the sample was collected were present for T. gondii, Leptospira spp., and JC virus. Variation in month the samples were collected was evident for T. gondii, Leptospira spp., and LAC virus. Main effects variables (age, sex, site, year, and month) for multivariate logistic regression (LR) models were screened using backward stepwise elimination (p≤0.20). The final LR model for T. gondii contained all main effects variables. Leptospira spp. and JC viral models both contained age, site, and year, while the final LAC viral LR model contained age, sex, and month. A subsample of deer (n=169 from DP and Palos; radio-collared and culled) analyzed for JC and LAC viral antibodies was used to evaluate habitat characteristics. Radio-collared does selected for forest, savanna, and grassland habitats (available habitat=p<0.0001; home range=p<0.001). Akaike's Information Criterion (AICc) optimal models for JC contained water and wetland habitat parameters while LAC models contained forested habitat. Deer biological parameters for JC viral models included age and month/year the samples were collected. Total home-range or buffer size and month were biological parameters contained in LAC viral models. Blood samples from live-captured and culled deer tested for JC (238 seropositive and 402 seronegative cases) and LAC viruses (51 seropositive and 402 seronegative cases) from 11 forest preserves were used for spatial analysis. Using the Bernoulli model in the space-time scan statistic in SaTScanRTM, a significant viral "hot spot" was revealed for JC virus in DP (p=0.009). A significant cluster for LAC virus was also found in DP (p=0.005). All clusters were independent of each other. Temporal patterns for JC virus spanned samples from December 1, 1995 to March 31, 1998. This research demonstrates deer are positive for several zoonotic diseases in the Chicago area. The environmental and habitat factors required to maintain pathogens and vectors are present at various levels in Cook County Forest Preserves. "Hot spots" are present for JC and LAC viruses and deer serve as an effective wildlife sentinel. The relationship between habitat and spatial data can be used to focus surveillance. This research not only quantifies deer exposures to pathogens, but also provides a more sensitive assessment of risk than human or pet surveillance alone. Wildlife species, such as deer, serve as effective disease sentinels because they are exposed to potential pathogens everyday in their natural environment when humans and pets are typically random and accidental exposures. Wildlife ecologists have a responsibility to increase public knowledge about the health status of animal populations while protecting humans and domestic animals from zoonotic diseases. This research represents the largest suburban deer zoonotic surveillance project to date in the United States and provides evidence that suburban deer are effective biomonitors for zoonoses. International, federal, and state management agencies collect various harvested wildlife species annually which could be easily accessed for zoonoses sampling. Annual culling of deer continues in Chicago area forest preserves and samples should be collected and analyzed for zoonotic diseases with minimum effort and cost. Results should be communicated to public health officials to assist in focusing vector control and to notify the public of potential exposures.

Tactile skins can enhance a robot's capabilities in many application domains, including whole-body manipulation, human-robot communication, and safe interaction. To support these enhancements, the expectation is that tactile skins will generate. First, we introduce the open-source tactile skin simulator BubbleTouch for generating tactile data since current tactile skin systems are not widely available to produce data for research. BubbleTouch uses kinematic and quasistatic mechanics to. We then disclose a new tactile data acquisition system for normal force tactile sensors based on compressed sensing. Compressed sensing simultaneously performs data sampling and compression. Given that the signals are sparse in some dictionary. We note that we found there was no single dictionary that provided the sparsest representation for every signal, and thus, we describe a process that takes the compressed signal and decides which dictionary to use during reconstruction. The meth. The volume of tactile data also makes it challenging for the processing system to analyze and utilize the tactile data for various applications. We discuss the particular processing application of tactile object classification and present an app.

The Any Light Particle Search IIc (ALPS IIc) experiment at DESY, a second-generation light-shining-through-a-wall (LSW) experiment, is expected to begin science operations in 2021. LSW experiments aim to generate and detect hypothesized axion or axion-like particles by twice exploiting the predicted coupling of photons to axions in the presence of a background magnetic field. First, axions are generated from photons propagating through a magnetic field towards an opaque wall (a shutter that is opaque to photons but not axions). Second, photons are regenerated from axions propagating through another magnetic field on the other side of the wall. The regenerated photons are identical to the photons on the generation side and so appear to have 'shined' through a wall. To increase the flux of generated axions and regenerated photons, ALPS IIc employs two very long, nearly identical optical cavities to resonantly enhance the conversion of photons to axions and back again. These optical cavities, one on each side of the wall and each immersed in an intense magnetic field, must be held simultaneously on resonance to achieve full sensitivity. While resonant enhancement is conceptually straightforward, the requirement that both optical cavities be maintained in precisely matched resonance conditions over long periods of time is highly non-trivial. This dissertation details the work that I have done towards the understanding and resolving of just a few of the challenges posed by ALPS IIc including: the modeling and design of dual wavelength HR mirror coatings, the simulation and statistics of the analysis of HET detector data, and the design and/or construction and verification of analog sensing, control and signal conditioning electronics. In addition, I describe my work on a novel test bed design for the measurement of dielectric mirror birefringence as well as a cavity birefringence test bed. This work could lay the foundation for a proposed vacuum magnetic birefringence experiment leveraging the ALPS IIc experimental infrastructure.

This dissertation examines the life of Sir Robert Dudley (1574-1649), son of the Earl of Leicester, whose status at birth was uncertain. He was interested in shipbuilding and navigation and led a voyage to the West Indies. Although he was treated as a member of the aristocracy and welcomed at the court of Queen Elizabeth, when his attempt to establish his legitimacy failed decisively, he left England and his wife and daughters. Arriving in France with his cousin, the couple converted to Catholicism and married. Dudley may have sought patronage from the Vatican. He gained the patronage of the Grand Duke of Florence and moved to Tuscany, where he used his shipbuilding and nautical skills for the benefit of the Medici Dukes. He also became Grand Chamberlain to three Grand Duchesses. This dissertation considers notions of identity that composed Dudley's life---Elizabethan courtier, aristocrat, naval architect, Catholic---and the ways in which using those identities enabled him to gain a place in the Medici court and entrench himself and his family in Florence.

Growth factors are indispensable in the formation and maintenance of neuronal circuits during development. We investigated the ability of manipulating key developmental signaling cascades to recapitulate a growth state in lesioned corticospinal motor neurons (CSMNs). We hypothesized that stimulation of axotomized CSMNs with insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), which robustly promotes neonatal CSMN axon outgrowth, would induce regenerative growth in the adult. We found IGF-I to promote the survival of axotomized CSMNs but not to promote their regeneration following either a cervical spinal cord lesion or a lesion at the level of the internal capsule. As an alternative approach to solely providing a source of growth factor to axotomized CSMNs, we proposed that over-expression of a growth factor receptor would alter the intrinsic capacity of the cell and induce regeneration in response to its ligand. Utilizing viral transgene delivery, we over-expressed the high-affinity brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) receptor trkB in layer V motor cortex. With subcortical axotomy and BDNF-secreting grafts, we observed regenerative axonal growth from identified CSMNs. We then attempted to refine a gene therapy technique for delivering a therapeutic transgene to the central nervous system via peripheral injection. We tested the ability of self-complementary adeno-associated virus (scAAV) serotypes 1-6 to retrogradely infect lower motor neurons following injection to either the neuromuscular junction or within the sciatic nerve. We found scAAV1 to be the most efficient for retrograde infection and anticipate exploiting this ability for delivering chemoattractive guidance cues to regenerating axons.

Obesity-related diseases account for the majority of morbidity and mortality in U.S. adults. An estimated 4 million women in the United States deliver an infant annually, of which approximately 34% are overweight/obese prior to pregnancy. More than 30% of these women gain weight that exceeds the IOM's recommendations; increasing their risk of postpartum weight retention and possibly increasing their risk of greater weight gain and retention over time. This research sought to test the efficacy of a traditional MED diet for 4-months on weight loss/control and biomarkers of inflammation in breastfeeding women compared to women randomized to the USDA's MyPyramid diet for Pregnancy and Breastfeeding (control diet). At baseline, the women (N=129) were 29.7+/-4.6 years, overweight (BMI: 27.2+/-4.9 kg/m2), and primarily non-Hispanic white (75.2%). The majority of women were exclusively breastfeeding (73.6%) and a mean 17.5 weeks postpartum. Adherence to the MED diet was evaluated via calculation of the MED diet score from validated FFQs administered pre- and post- the diet intervention. Anthropometric measurements (body weight, body fat, and waist and hip circumference) and biosamples (blood, urine, and breast milk) were collected at baseline and 4-months (diet completion). Biomarkers of inflammation (IL-6 and TNF-alpha) were assessed via standard ELISA kits. The MED diet score was increased by 0.68+/-2.74 and 0.27+/-1.57 for the MED and control group, respectively. Increases in fish and dairy intake and a decrease in meat/poultry intake were significantly different between diet groups (P<0.05). Participants in both diet groups demonstrated significant (P=0.002) reductions in all anthropometric measurements; no significant between group differences were shown. A significant decrease in TNF-alpha, but not IL-6, was demonstrated in both diet groups. There were no significant between group differences. Both the MED diet and the USDA's MyPyramid diet were effective in reducing anthropometric measurements and inflammation in postpartum breastfeeding women.
