      • VeKo25Cr: A Corrosion and Wear Resistant Powder Metallurgical Alloy with a Basic Hardness of 52 HRC

        To meet the demands for use in extremely abrasive and corrosive environments, a new material was developed. The VeKo25Cr distinguishes itself through specifically selected amounts of carbon and carbide forming elements such as Cr, Mo, V, W and Nb. The alloy is based on a Fe matrix. The strength after heat treatment and the wear and corrosion properties are compared to those of other materials. VeKo25Cr can be combined with easy-to-process materials such that the difficult handling is minimized to those places on the piece most subjected to operational wear.

      • An Assessment of Francis Collins’ Critique of Intelligent Design

        Francis Collins, former head of the Human Genome Project and currently Director of The National Institute of Health, is a prominent opponent of the Intelligent Design Movement, a movement that claims that modern Darwinism is insufficient for explaining the emergence and development of the complex biosystem and offers an alternate theory. In his 2006 book, The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief, Collins offers a critical review of the movement that is tantamount to a call for Intelligent Design theorists to cease and desist. Collins argues that Intelligent Design is a “God of the gaps” theory, that it’s not a valid scientific theory, that it infers the existence of a “clumsy Creator” and that it inappropriately conflates scientific inquiries with religious studies. This thesis examines Collins’ critique of Intelligent Design theory from a broadly evidentialist perspective and argues that Collins’ objections to Intelligent Design theory are flawed.

        From Imagism to Vorticism: Understanding the Early Work of Ezra Pound

        Students and other new readers of modernist poetry often experience difficulty with the influential early work of Ezra Pound. Although these typically brief poems may appear (deceptively) simple, an understanding of the relationship between Imagism and Vorticism is crucial to reading―or teaching―them effectively, which in turn requires significant familiarity with relevant poetics theories as well as representative poems. This essay clarifies the complex relations Imagism and Vorticism as two distinct styles that are too often conflated to the detriment of an accurate understanding of either one (and, in consequence, of the later modernist poetry that builds on their discoveries). In order to elucidate the modernists’ justification of free verse over traditional metrical composition, I begin with an elaboration of T. E. Hulme’s 1911 theory of the “cheerful, dry, and sophisticated” modern classicism on which both Imagism and Vorticism were largely predicated, developing Hulme’s important distinction between the version of classicism that is “static” (and gives rise to Imagism) and the one that is “dynamic” (and leads to Vorticism and beyond it). In the following two sections, I draw upon and synthesize a broad range of Pound’s own poetics statements to reveal the evolution of first sound (“melopoeia”) and then the image (“phanopoeia”) throughout his early work. Although the body of this article is analytical and historical in nature, it concludes with a practical template prompt for a creative response assignment, appropriate to undergraduate and graduate students, designed to help new readers recognize for themselves how Vorticist art works and why it matters.

      • Reduction of the 6<SUP>th</SUP> and 12<SUP>th</SUP> harmonic in the torque ripple of a salient pole synchronous reluctance machine

        In this paper a reduction method for torque–ripple is evaluated. Synchronous reluctance motors (SynRM) combine highly efficient operation with low initial costs of the drive system. The disadvantage of the used salient pole rotor structure is that a strong torque–ripple could occur. To deal with this unwanted torque harmonics the classical mathematical model of the SynRM has to be enhanced. With this extended model a torque–ripple suppression method was developed which does not require detailed information of the system. These theoretical approaches were experimentally tested on a prototype to verify the performance of the enhanced drive system.

        The purpose of this research is to develop an assistive device for upper limbs. The disturbance estimation property of the internal model control is applied to detect motion intention of users. The experimental prototype of the assistive device for upper limbs is developed to evaluate the proposed control method. Effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by experiments. The experimental results include also that muscular activities occur in several muscles using surface electromyography. The proposed device is expected to maintain residual function of upper limbs.

        Expression in Escherichia coli and Purification of Folded rDer p 20, the Arginine Kinase From Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus: A Possible Biomarker for Allergic Asthma

        Arginine kinase (AK) was first identified as an allergen in the Indian-meal moth and subsequently shown to occur as allergen in various invertebrates and shellfish. The cDNA coding for AK from the house dust mite (HDM) species Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Der p 20, has been isolated, but no recombinant Der p 20 (rDer p 20) allergen has been produced and characterized so far. We report the expression of Der p 20 as recombinant protein in Escherichia coli. rDer p 20 was purified and shown to be a monomeric, folded protein by size exclusion chromatography and circular dichroism spectroscopy, respectively. Using AK-specific antibodies, Der p 20 was found to occur mainly in HDM bodies, but not in fecal particles. Thirty percent of clinically well-characterized HDM allergic patients (n = 98) whose immunoglobulin E (IgE) reactivity profiles had been determined with an extensive panel of purified HDM allergens (Der f 1, 2; Der p 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15, 18, 21, 23 and 37) showed IgE reactivity to Der p 20. IgE reactivity to Der p 20 was more frequently associated with lung symptoms. AKs were detected in several invertebrates with specific antibodies and Der p 20 showed IgE cross-reactivity with AK from shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Thus, Der p 20 is a cross-reactive HDM allergen and may serve as a diagnostic marker for HDM-induced lung symptoms such as asthma.

        Mitochondrial iron accumulation with age and functional consequences

        <P>Summary</P><P>During the aging process, an accumulation of non-heme iron disrupts cellular homeostasis and contributes to the mitochondrial dysfunction typical of various neuromuscular degenerative diseases. Few studies have investigated the effects of iron accumulation on mitochondrial integrity and function in skeletal muscle and liver tissue. Thus, we isolated liver mitochondria (LM), as well as quadriceps-derived subsarcolemmal mitochondria (SSM) and interfibrillar mitochondria (IFM), from male Fischer 344× Brown Norway rats at 8, 18, 29 and 37 months of age. Non-heme iron content in SSM, IFM and LM was significantly higher with age, reaching a maximum at 37 months of age. The mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) was more susceptible to the opening in aged mitochondria containing high levels of iron (i.e. SSM and LM) compared to IFM. Furthermore, mitochondrial RNA oxidation increased significantly with age in SSM and LM, but not in IFM. Levels of mitochondrial RNA oxidation in SSM and LM correlated positively with levels of mitochondrial iron, whereas a significant negative correlation was observed between the maximum Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> amounts needed to induce mPTP opening and iron contents in SSM, IFM and LM. Overall, our data suggest that age-dependent accumulation of mitochondrial iron may increase mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative damage, thereby enhancing the susceptibility to apoptosis.</P>

        During the past decades enormous quantities of industrial chemicals have been released into the envionment. Although most of these compounds are readily biodegraded, some-mainly those having novel structural elements or substituents not or rarely found in natrue (xenobiotics)-are only catabolized slowly and thus tend to persist in the environment, Chloroaromatic compounds represent particularly hazardous pollutants. They are and have been used as pesticides, solvents, plasticizers and dielectric fluids, and a number of highly toxic compounds such as chlorinated dioxins have been formed as by-products of industrial processes and during incineration of organic wastes. The existence of many wate storage sites containing toxic chemicals and large scale, though now diminishing, chronic pollution from current industrial practices, necessitate both the termination of production of toxic and persistent industrial chemical, and the more efficient exploitation of remediation technologies, in order to diminish the consequences of existing and ongoing environmental pollution.

        Ultrapure Green Light-Emitting Diodes Using Two-Dimensional Formamidinium Perovskites: Achieving Recommendation 2020 Color Coordinates

        <P>Pure green light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are essential for realizing an ultrawide color gamut in next-generation displays, as is defined by the recommendation (Rec.) 2020 standard. However, because the human eye is more sensitive to the green spectral region, it is not yet possible to achieve an ultrapure green electroluminescence (EL) with a sufficiently narrow bandwidth that covers >95% of the Rec. 2020 standard in the CIE 1931 color space. Here, we demonstrate efficient, ultrapure green EL based on the colloidal two-dimensional (2D) formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr(3)) hybrid perovskites. Through the dielectric quantum well (DQW) engineering, the quantum-confined 2D FAPbBr(3) perovskites exhibit a high exciton binding energy of 162 meV, resulting in a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of similar to 92% in the spin-coated films. Our optimized LED devices show a maximum current efficiency (eta(CE)) of 13.02 cd A(-1) and the CIE 1931 color coordinates of (0.168, 0.773). The color gamut covers 97% and 99% of the Rec. 2020 standard in the CIE 1931 and the CIE 1976 color space, respectively, representing the 'greenest' LEDs ever reported. Moreover, the device shows only a similar to 10% roll-off in eta(CE) (11.3 cd A(-1)) at 1000 cd m(-2). We further demonstrate large-area (3 cm(2)) and ultraflexible (bending radius of 2 mm) LEDs based on 2D perovskites.</P>
