THE PARKES PULSAR TIMING ARRAY PROJECT
HOBBS, GEORGE The Korean Astronomical Society 2015 天文學論叢 Vol.30 No.2
The main goals of the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array (PPTA) project are to 1) detect ultra-low-frequency gravitational waves, 2) improve the solar system planetary ephemeris and 3) provide a long-term, stable time standard. In this paper, we highlight the main results from the project so far and discuss our expectations for the future.

Vietnam has an ambitious plan for higher education renovation. By 2020, its higher education system is to attain standards approaching the world's most advanced (MOET 2008). Among its hallmarks are a new emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking; the graduation of 20,000 doctoral students in foreign universities - 2500 of them in the U.S by the year 2020 (MOET 2008); a large jump in the number of students and professionals with strong English language skills; and cooperation with U.S. institutions to build new universities and curricula in Vietnam, and to address the needs of Vietnamese students in American universities. Recent high-level education workshops and diplomatic exchanges between the countries have resulted in a consensus on several key issues, notably the need to raise the capacity of Vietnamese science and scholarship to the highest possible standard. Each of the steps needed for this renovation represents a challenge and an opportunity for U.S. universities. Anticipating these developments and needs on both sides, the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU) is building a collaborative bi-national and multidisciplinary platform to assist Vietnam’s efforts in education reform.
Deep Lexical Semantics: The Ontological Ascent
( Jerry R. Hobbs ) 한국언어정보학회 2007 학술대회 논문집 Vol.2007 No.-
Concepts of greater and greater complexity can be constructed by building systems of entities, by relating other entities to that system with a figure-ground relation, by embedding concepts of figure-ground in the concept of change, by embedding that in causality, and by coarsening the granularity and beginning the process over again. This process can be called the Ontological Ascent. It pervades natural language discourse, and suggests that to do lexical semantics properly, we must carefully axiomatize abstract theories of systems of entities, the figure-ground relation, change, causality, and granularity. In this paper, I out line what these theories should look like.

Background: Advancements in the field of microvascular surgery and the widespread adoption of microvascular surgical techniques have made the use of osteocutaneous fibula free flaps the standard of care in the surgical management of segmental mandibular defects. Although the literature possesses abundant evidence to support the effectiveness of fibula free flaps as a reconstructive method, there are relatively few studies reporting on outcomes as objectively measured by videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS). The purpose of this study is to explore the potential correlation between early postoperative VFSS and the long-term swallowing outcomes in patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction with fibula free flaps. Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of 36 patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction with osteocutaneous fibular free flaps between 2009 and 2012. Demographics, clinical variables, VFSS data, and diet information were retrieved. Penetration and aspiration findings on VFSS, long-term oral feeding ability, and the need for gastrostomy tube were statistical endpoints correlated with postoperative clinical outcomes. Results: Thirty-six patients were reviewed (15 females and 21 males) with a mean age of 54 years (7-81). Seventeen cases were treated for malignancy. The size of the bony defect ranged from 3 to 15 cm (mean = 9 cm). The cutaneous paddle, a surrogate for soft tissue defect, ranged from 10 to 125 ㎠ (mean = 52 ㎠). A gastrostomy tube was present in patients preoperatively (n = 8), and postoperatively (n = 14). Seventeen patients had neoadjuvant exposure to radiation. Postoperative VFSS showed penetration in 13 cases (36%) and aspiration in seven (19%). Overall, 29 patients (80.6%) achieved unrestricted diet, and this was statistically correlated with age (p = 0.037), radiation therapy (p = 0.002), and preoperative gastrostomy tube (p = 0.03). The presence of penetration or aspiration on VFSS was a strong predictor for long-term unrestricted oral diet (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Early postoperative VFSS is an excellent predictor for long-term swallowing outcomes in patients undergoing mandibular reconstruction with osteocutaneous fibula free flaps.

An investigation was conducted to determine whether the rumen modifiers lasalocid and avoparcin, when included in molasses/urea based supplements, enhanced liveweight performance, in early weaned calves. As part of the study the broad-spectrum parasiticle Avermectin B1 was given to the calves to assess any undesirable side effects on animals of less than four months of age. There were no significant (p>0.05) liveweight responses to supplementation when the rumen modifiers lasalocid and avoparcin were included in supplement rations. Lasalocid reduced supplement intake, however, it had no adverse effect on liveweight gain. Avoparcin substantially improved growth when cottonseed meal was included in the ration. Weaners treated with Avermectin B1 tended to show a greater liveweight gain than untreated weaners during the experiment (p<0.10) and no adverse side effects were noted.

Wildlife ecologists and biologists recapture deer to collect tracking data from deer collars or wait for a drop-off of a deer collar construction that is automatically detached and disconnected. The research teams need to manage a base camp with medical trailers, helicopters, and airplanes to capture deer or wait for several months until the deer collar drops off of the deer’s neck. We propose an intelligent robust base-station research with a low-cost and time saving method to obtain recording sensor data from their collars to a listener node, and readings are obtained without opening the weatherproof deer collar. We successfully designed the and implemented a robust base station system for automatically collecting data of the collars and listener motes in harsh wilderness environments. Intelligent solutions were also analyzed for improved data collections and pattern predictions with drone-based detection and tracking algorithms.
Body-centered cubic phase in 3-arm star mesogens: a torsional tapping AFM and GISAXS study

The mode of liquid crystal (LC) self-assembly of asymmetric three-arm star oligobenzoate mesogens has been investigated by torsional tapping mode AFM imaging, and by bulk and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction. It was confirmed that the cubic liquid crystal phase has Im3&cmb.macr;m symmetry and established that it consists of spherical aggregates arranged on a body-centered lattice, rather than having a bicontinuous structure. Molecular simulation suggests that, in spite of their perceived rigidity, the oligobenzoate mesogens are folded, often sharply, within the supramolecular spheres, and that they act effectively as conical objects. The recently introduced torsional tapping AFM technique has allowed high resolution and contrast to be obtained from the soft mobile surface of the samples, showing the (110) plane of highly ordered supramolecular spheres. Notably the fine structure of the observed steps reveals that nearly isolated micelles still preserve their integrity. Finally, the equilibrium habits of the cubic LC droplets were shown by optical microscopy to be polyhedral with crystallographic facets, rather than spherical. This suggests that the air–LC interface is below the roughening transition temperature, which is attributed to the whole micelles rather than the isolated molecules acting as the interacting units.

Graphic Abstract

A combination of torsional tapping atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction confirmed a cubic liquid crystal phase in 3-arm star mesogens, displaying faceted gem-like droplets and stable isolated self-assembled micelles at surface steps.

We report on L-g = 80-nm trigate quantum-well InGaAs metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) with record combination of subthreshold swing, transconductance and ON-current performance. The device features a multilayer cap design, bilayer Al2O3/HfO2 (0.7/2 nm) gate-stack by atomic layer deposition and dry etched In0.53Ga0.47As fin. An L-g = 80-nm trigate MOSFET with fin-width (W-fin) = 30 nm and fin-height (H-fin) = 20 nm exhibits excellent performance, such as ON-resistance (R-ON) = 220 Omega-mu m, subthreshold swing (S) = 82 mV/dec, and drain-induced-barrier lowering = 10 mV/V at V-DS = 0.5 V. Besides, the device exhibits record values of maximum transconductance (g(m_ max)) = 1800 mu S/mu m and I-ON = 0.41 mA/mu m at V-DS = 0.5 V, and a record combination of g(m_ max) and S in any III-V nonplanar MOSFET technology.
