      • Being there: society of the Phoneur Gendered customising of mobile telephonic net practices in Seoul

Larissa Hjorth,Heewon Kim 한국방송학회 2004 한국방송학회 세미나 및 보고서 Vol.- No.-

As symbolic of globalised ICTs (Information and Communication Technology), the mobile phone attracts debates about the demise of geography, tradition and sociality. However, one look at the ways in which particular cultures appropriate and localized the mobile phone suggests things may not be so simple. In the Asia-Pacific region we can see that mobile telephonic practices are diverse with uneven penetration rates, in each specific site mobile phones are used in different ways, capitulating to the experiences of locality. The region houses the ""four tigers"" (Seoul, Taipei, Singapore and Hong Kong) with penetration rates of over 75% whilst in other areas there is as little as 4.2% (Katz and Aakhus 2002: 5). Locations such as Tokyo and Seoul have been the first places to successfully implement 3-G (third generation) mobile devices within everyday practices. In these areas forms of customisation signify both processes of individualization and social capital. Moving beyond gender stereotypes and prevailing Techno-Orientalism, one can see that cute character customization is a contested terrain being transformed by new mobile net telephonic practices. This paper looks specifically at the ways mobile net telephony is used (particularly through modes of customisation) in Seoul to contest the often cited claim that mobile telephony is not just a vehicle for individuality but responsible for increasingly alienation and disintegration of traditional forms of sociality and spatiality. As an example of a location immersed by 3-G technologies, Seoul provides a compelling context for analysis, specifically in terms of the debates about ICT's mediation of actual contact and the formation of individualization and social capital. In the case of Seoul, we can see that mobile telephony operates as a vehicle to revise the traditional notion of ""chon"" in order to further enhance pre-existing relations whilst also forging new ""connections"". Experiences of both strengthening already existing forms of social capital and also affording avenues to extend beyond the known friendships and meet new like-minded individuals, Seoul's mobile net telephony provides a curious model in debates around mediation, individualisation and social capital. In this way, mobile telephony must be understood in terms of remediation - that is remediating and extending from older technologies, practices and social relations - and thus demonstrating that whilst paradoxes abound in contemporary modern societies, mobile technologies do not necessarily fracture older forms of sociality and cultural practices (Bolter and Grusin 1999; Flew 2002).

      • The mobile reel : mobile media as art form or communication medium

Larissa Hjorth 한국방송학회 2007 한국방송학회 세미나 및 보고서 Vol.- No.-

Over the last couple of years we have become customised to the global media informing us of the revolutionary and democratic possibilities of mobile media. Whether we like it or not the mobile phone has become a vehicle for multimedia par excellence (Boyd, 2005). The epiphany of convergence (Jenkins, 2005), users who just want a mobile phone for voice call find it impossible to get such a device without all the 'extras'. In one way, the rise of mobile media parallels the rise of the webcam (Koskela 2004) by affording everyday users with the ability to document and edit their stories, however, mobile media promises more - the portal to new arising forms of distribution such as MySpace, Cyworld minihompy, YouTube etc. But is mobile media a medium or an art form? And just what types of new modes of digital storytelling are evolving? If audiences are making films, where does this leave the traditional filmmaker? And what are the specific visual and aural economies of mobile media and how do they translate into other contexts? Is the recent release of the feature length movie shot entirely by mobile phones by South African Aryan Kaganof, SMS Sugar Man, a sign of things to come? Is there some type of realism and authenticity inflected by mobile media as democratic media? Will our cinemas be flooded with handheld, blurry, low resolution films that make Dogma 95 films look like conventional Hollywood film? Or will the miniature and compressed aesthetics of mobiles lend themselves to new avant-garde forms of cinema that may not be presented in the normal cinema context? Will the TV-like 'radio with pictures' quality of mobile media lend itself to highly aural micro-narratives lasting not longer than 2 minutes? One of the dominant features of mobile media is how it further fetishises the analogue by way of its obsession with modes of realism - or what Ilpo Koskinen characterizes as 'the aesthetics of banality' (2007). In this way, mobile media oscillates between the real and the reel. This paper will outline some ways in which we can begin to conceptualise the rubric of mobile media by discussing a couple of modes of mobile media - such as camera phone practices and mobile moving making. The examples are drawn from my ethnographic research and new media practice.

On the use of tuned mass dampers to suppress vortex shedding induced vibrations

Strommen, Einar,Hjorth-Hansen, Erik Techno-Press 2001 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.4 No.1

This paper concerns computational response predictions when a tuned mass damper is intended to be used for the suppression of vortex shedding induced vibrations of e.g., a bridge deck. A general frequency domain theory is presented and its application is exemplified on a suspension bridge (where vortex shedding vibrations have been observed and where such an installation is a possible solution). Relevant load data are taken from previous wind tunnel tests. In particular, the displacement response statistics of the tuned mass damper as well as the bridge deck are obtained from time domain simulations, showing that after the installation of a TMD peak factors between three and four should be expected.

Nanomedicine-based antimicrobial peptide delivery for bacterial infections: recent advances and future prospects

Thapa Raj Kumar,Diep Dzung B.,Tønnesen Hanne Hjorth 한국약제학회 2021 Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation Vol.51 No.4

Background Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have gained wide interest as viable alternatives to antibiotics owing to their potent antimicrobial effects and the low propensity of resistance development. However, their physicochemical properties (solubility, charge, hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity), stability issues (proteolytic or enzymatic degradation, aggregation, chemical degradation), and toxicities (interactions with blood components or cellular toxicities) limit their therapeutic applications. Area covered Nanomedicine-based therapeutic delivery is an emerging concept. The AMP loaded nanoparticles have been prepared and investigated for their antimicrobial effects. In this review, we will discuss different nanomedicine-based AMP delivery systems including metallic nanoparticles, lipid nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles, and their hybrid systems along with their future prospects for potent antimicrobial efficacy. Expert opinion Nanomedicine-based AMP delivery is a recent approach to the treatment of bacterial infections. The advantageous properties of nanoparticles including the enhancement of AMP stability, controlled release, and targetability make them suitable for the augmentation of AMP activity. Modifications in the nanomedicine-based approach are required to overcome the problems of nanoparticle instability, shorter residence time, and toxicity. Future rigorous studies for both the AMP loaded nanoparticle preparation and characterization, and detailed evaluations of their in vitro and in vivo antimicrobial effects and toxicities, are essential.
