Daoism was introduced into the South-West of Vietnam via two main entries: the missionaries from North and Central Vietnam who migrated to the South by following the Southward movement and the spread of Daoism by Chinese migrant men who came and settled in the South-West of Vietnam from the late seventieth century to late nineteenth century. However, the biggest influence of Daoism in the Southwest of Vietnam was mainly the Chinese missionaries of Daoism. As time went by, together with the impacts of social and historical circumstances, Daoism had a strong influence on the lives of the South-West people in terms of different aspects, especially their faith and religions. The impact of Daoism into people's faith and religion was considerable, especially to the indigenous religions, of which the religion, Four Debts of Gratitude, is a representative example. With the aims of clarifying how Four Debts of Gratitude was influenced by Daoist thought and how the indigenous religions and systemized ideologies in the South-West of Vietnam were related during the period of living condition expansion as well as cohabitation of several ethnic groups in the region, this article focuses on Daoist thought expressed in typical symbols in the sacred architecture of the Four Debts of Gratitude such as Cổ Lầu, wine gourds, and the Eight Trigrams. Once properly examined, it becomes clear that the prominent symbols and other Daoist elements show that Daoism had a profound influence on the Four Debts of Gratitude.

In this paper, we introduce three subgradient extragradient algorithms for solving pseudomonotone equilibrium problems. The paper originates from the subgradient extragradient algorithm for variational inequalities and the extragradient method for pseudomonotone equilibrium problems in which we have to solve two optimization programs onto feasible set. The main idea of the proposed algorithms is that at every iterative step, we have replaced the second optimization program by that one on a specific half-space which can be performed more easily. The weakly and strongly convergent theorems are established under widely used assumptions for bifunctions.

soft tissue changes following maxillary expansion using micro-implantsupported maxillary skeletal expanders (MSEs) in young adults by cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) and to evaluate the correlations between hard and soft tissue changes after MSE usage. Methods: Twenty patients (mean age, 22.4 years; range, 17.6–27.1) with maxillary transverse deficiency treated with MSEs were selected. Mean expansion amount was 6.5 mm. CBCT images taken before and after expansion were superimposed to measure the changes in soft and hard tissue landmarks. Statistical analyses were performed using paired t-test and Pearson’s correlation analysis on the basis of the normality of data. Results: Average lateral movement of the cheek points was 1.35 mm (right) and 1.08 mm (left), and that of the alar curvature points was 1.03 mm (right) and 1.02 mm (left). Average forward displacement of the cheek points was 0.59 mm (right) and 0.44 mm (left), and that of the alar curvature points was 0.61 mm (right) and 0.77 mm (left) (p < 0.05). Anterior nasal spine (ANS), posterior nasal spine (PNS), and alveolar bone width showed significant increments (p < 0.05). Changes in the cheek and alar curvature points on both sides significantly correlated with hard tissue changes (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Maxillary expansion using MSEs resulted in significant lateral and forward movements of the soft tissues of cheek and alar curvature points on both sides in young adults and correlated with the maxillary suture opening at the ANS and PNS.
Optimization of CdS/ZnO Electrode for Use in Photoelectrochemical Cell

<P>Optimization of highly porous ZnO thin film electrode structures is carried out for use in photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell. Spherical voids are formed in ZnO films using a sacrificial template of polystyrene spheres of ∼400 nm sizes. The voids serve as light scattering centers for dramatically enhanced light absorption in the visible region of the solar spectrum, and as channels for electrolyte infiltration into the film. The UV-vis spectra reveal that light absorption at wavelength of 800 nm is enhanced to about 99%. The voids are further used as a route for the deposition of CdS nano-crystallites throughout the ZnO film. The CdS-decorated ZnO nanoparticulate structure shows a photon-to-electron conversion efficiency of 5.7% under a solar simulator. This efficiency value is the highest reported so far among ZnO-based electrodes, and is achieved by optimization of the nanostructure in the CdS-decorated ZnO films.</P>

<B>Abstract</B><P>The repellency to female Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) of 21 essential oils (EOs) alone or in combination with Calophyllum inophyllum L. (Clusiaceae) nut oil (tamanu oil) was examined using an exposed human hand bioassay. Results were compared with those of commonly used repellent N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET). In tests with six human male volunteers at a dose of 0.5 mg/cm2, patchouli (protection time [PT], 3.67 h) was the most effective EO but less active than DEET (4.47 h), as judged by the PT to first bite. Very strong repellency also was produced by clove bud, lovage root, and clove leaf EOs (PT, 3.50-3.25 h), whereas strong repellency was obtained from thyme white EO (2.12 h). Thyme red, oregano, and geranium EOs exhibited moderate repellency (PT, 1.24-1.11 h). At 0.25 mg/cm2, protection time of clove bud, clove leaf, and lovage root EOs (PT, ≈1 h) was shorter than that of DEET (2.17 h). An increase in the protection time was produced by binary mixtures (PT, 2.68-2.04 h) of five EOs (clove bud, clove leaf, thyme white, patchouli, and savory) and tamanu oil (0.25:2.0 mg/cm2) compared with that of either the constituted essential oil or tamanu oil alone (PT, 0.56 h). The protection time of these binary mixtures was comparable with that of DEET. With the exception of savory EO, the other EOs, tamanu oil, and binary mixtures did not induce any adverse effects on the human volunteers at 0.5 mg/cm2. Thus, binary mixtures of essential oils and tamanu oil described merit further study as potential repellents for protection from humans and domestic animals from biting and nuisance caused by S. calcitrans.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In our search for novel small molecules targeting histone deacetylases, we have designed and synthesized several series of novel <I>N</I>-hydroxybenzamides/<I>N</I>-hydroxypropenamides incorporating quinazolin-4(3<I>H</I>)-ones (<B>4a-h</B>, <B>8a-d, 10a-d)</B>. Biological evaluation showed that these hydroxamic acids were generally cytotoxic against three human cancer cell lines (SW620, colon; <I>PC</I>-3, prostate; NCI-H23, lung cancer). It was found that the <I>N</I>-hydroxypropenamides (<B>10a-d)</B> were the most potent, both in term of HDAC inhibition and cytotoxicity. Several compounds, e.g. <B>4e</B>, <B>8b-c</B>, and <B>10a-c</B>, displayed up to 4-fold more potent than SAHA (suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid, vorinostat) in term of cytotoxicity. These compounds also comparably inhibited HDACs with IC50 values in sub-micromolar range. Docking experiments on HDAC2 isozyme revealed some important features contributing to the inhibitory activity of synthesized compounds, especially for propenamide analogues. Pynomial modeling for efficient predistortion of HPA
Hieu, Nguyen Thanh,Jianxue, Jin,Ryu, Heung-Gyoon 충북대학교 컴퓨터정보통신 연구소 2004 컴퓨터정보통신연구 Vol.12 No.3
High power amplifier (HPA) in transmitter of communication systems usually operates in near saturation point in order to achieve the maximum power efficiency. In this region, undesirable nonlinear distortions may be introduced. In this paper, we present a polynomial modeling method used for efficient predistortion to compensate for the nonlinear distortion. The polynomial models are derived from the electrical parameters in data sheets of actual amplifiers such as gain, the third order intercept point of output power and 1dB compression point. We can find the polynomial coefficients of predistorter from the HPA polynomial modeling. Then, it is simple and effective to suppress the nonlinear distortion. We also study the effects of predistortion on the SER performance of communication system with 16-QAM modulation format. From the simulation results, it can be shown that BER performance is improved by the proposed efficient predistortion.
