Colonial Legacies and Territorial Claims
Paul R. Hensel,HeeMin Kim,Dale Smith 한국국제정치학회 2008 한국국제정치학회 학술대회 발표논문집 Vol.- No.-
Most of today's nation-states experienced colonial rule at some point during the last two centuries, with well-studied economic, political, and social consequences after decolonization. This study examines a different form of the colonial legacy, involving the stability of the territorial status quo. We lay out a number of different forms that colonial legacies might take with respect to territorial claims, focusing both on relations between two former colonies and on relations between a former colony and its former colonial ruler. We then present and test hypotheses about the impact of these legacies on territorial claims. Our preliminary results show strong evidence that colonial legacies affect territorial conflict after independence, with conflict more likely after violent decolonization and in relations between former colonies of the same colonizer, although more detailed followup research is called for. Paper presented at the conference "National Territory and Sovereignty: Sixty Years Since the Founding of the Nation," Seoul, August 2008. This paper is based on original research by Paul R. The paper is a critical review of the book Godel, Putnam, and Functionalism: A New Reading of Representation and Reality by Jeff Buechner, which isa defense of computational functionalism against arguments formulated by Putnam, Searle, Fodor, Lucas and others. Buechner, after having meticulously analyzed these arguments, concludes that all of them fail to show that computational functionalism is not a viable strategy to model the mind in cognitive science. As such, it is a defense of a mathematically-informed version of computational functionalism. We discuss Beuchner`s strategy in quite a bit of detail and make some comments.

We describe a construction which takes as an input a left order of the fundamental group of a manifold, and outputs a (singular) foliation of this manifold which is analogous to a taut foliation. We investigate this construction in detail in dimension 2, and exhibit connections to various problems in dimension 3.

In this study, we optimized the optical conditions and associated positioning scheme for an ultrahigh-spatial-resolution, solid-state gamma detector. The detector module consisted of an array of seven hexagonal silicon drift detectors (SDDs) packed hexagonally and coupled to a single slab of crystal via a light guide glass. Because the optical behavior and requirements of the detector module and noise characteristics of the SDD sensor are different from those of conventional photomultiplier tube (PMT)-based detectors, the following parameters were studied to determine the optimum condition: scintillator selection, the effect of cooling on signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the depth dependence of the scintillation light distribution, and optimum shaping time. To that end, a modified, Anger-style positioning algorithm with a denoise scheme was also developed to address the estimation bias (pincushion distortion) caused by the excessively confined light distribution and the leakage current induced by the SDD sensor. The results of this study proved that the positioning algorithm, together with the optimized optical configuration of the detector module, improves the positioning accuracy of the prototype detector. Our results confirmed the ability of the prototype to achieve a spatial resolution of about 0.7 mm in full width at half maximum (FWHM) for 122 keV gamma rays under the equivalent noise count (ENC) of 100 (e- rms) per SDD channel. The results also confirmed NaI(Tl) to be a more desirable scintillator for our prototype with an energy resolution performance of about 8%.

This research is composed of two cross-sectional studies that examine the lingeringemotional distress associated with a natural disaster and extend the understanding of itsimpact on consumption attitudes and behaviors when victims are confronted with additionalchallenges. The first study examines victims’ (n ¼ 426) depression-induced impulsive andcompulsive buying after Hurricane Katrina; the second investigates how the recession hasexacerbated victims’ (n ¼ 191) lingering stress and depressive states, and the effects ofthese on consumption. These historical events provide a unique opportunity to extend thelife event and disaster research and to examine the relationship between negative events andspecific consumer behaviors. Results indicate that, years later, compulsive buying has notsubsided, and the adversity brought on by the recession appears to have contributed toextended depressive states. Implications for marketers and public policy makers arediscussed, as they relate to how vulnerable consumers cope with negative life events.
