Control and Analysis of an Integrated Bidirectional DC/AC and DC/DC Converters for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle Applications

Hegazy, Omar,Van Mierlo, Joeri,Lataire, Philippe The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2011 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.11 No.4

The plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are specialized hybrid electric vehicles that have the potential to obtain enough energy for average daily commuting from batteries. The PHEV battery would be recharged from the power grid at home or at work and would thus allow for a reduction in the overall fuel consumption. This paper proposes an integrated power electronics interface for PHEVs, which consists of a novel Eight-Switch Inverter (ESI) and an interleaved DC/DC converter, in order to reduce the cost, the mass and the size of the power electronics unit (PEU) with high performance at any operating mode. In the proposed configuration, a novel Eight-Switch Inverter (ESI) is able to function as a bidirectional single-phase AC/DC battery charger/ vehicle to grid (V2G) and to transfer electrical energy between the DC-link (connected to the battery) and the electric traction system as DC/AC inverter. In addition, a bidirectional-interleaved DC/DC converter with dual-loop controller is proposed for interfacing the ESI to a low-voltage battery pack in order to minimize the ripple of the battery current and to improve the efficiency of the DC system with lower inductor size. To validate the performance of the proposed configuration, the indirect field-oriented control (IFOC) based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed to optimize the efficiency of the AC drive system in PHEVs. The maximum efficiency of the motor is obtained by the evaluation of optimal rotor flux at any operating point, where the PSO is applied to evaluate the optimal flux. Moreover, an improved AC/DC controller based Proportional-Resonant Control (PRC) is proposed in order to reduce the THD of the input current in charger/V2G modes. The proposed configuration is analyzed and its performance is validated using simulated results obtained in MATLAB/ SIMULINK. Furthermore, it is experimentally validated with results obtained from the prototypes that have been developed and built in the laboratory based on TMS320F2808 DSP.

      • Incorporation of water sludge, silica fume, and rice husk ash in brick making

        Hegazy, Badr El-Din Ezzat,Fouad, Hanan Ahmed,Hassanain, Ahmed Mohammed Techno-Press 2012 Advances in environmental research Vol.1 No.1

The water sludge is generated from the treatment of water with alum. Disposing of sludge again to the streams raises the concentrations of aluminum oxides in water, which has been linked to Alzheimer's disease. The use of water treatment plant (WTP) sludge in manufacturing of constructional elements achieves both the economical and environmental benefits. Due to the similar mineralogical composition of clay and WTP sludge, this study investigated the complete substitution of brick clay by sludge incorporated with some of the agricultural and industrial wastes, such as rice husk ash (RHA) and silica fume (SF). Three different series of sludge to SF to RHA proportions by weight were tried, which were (25: 50: 25%), (50: 25: 25%), and (25: 25: 50%), respectively. Each brick series was fired at 900, 1000, 1100, and $1200^{\circ}C$. The physical and mechanical properties of the produced bricks were then determined and evaluated according to Egyptian Standard Specifications (E.S.S.) and compared to control clay-brick. From the obtained results, it was concluded that by operating at the temperature commonly practiced in the brick kiln, a mixture consists of 50% of sludge, 25% of SF, and 25% of RHA was the optimum materials proportions to produce brick from water sludge incorporated with SF and RHA. The produced bricks properties were obviously superior to the 100% clay control-brick and to those available in the Egyptian market.

      • TALENs Construction: Slowly but Surely

Hegazy, Wael Abdel Halim,Youns, Mahmoud Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.7

Cancer is thought to be a direct result of transcriptional misregulation. Broad analysis of transcriptional regulatory elements in healthy and cancer cells is needed to understand cancer development. Nucleases regulatory domains are recruited to bind and manipulate a specific genomic locus with high efficacy and specificity. TALENs (transcription activator-like effector nuclease) fused to endonuclease FokI have been used widely to target specific sequences to edit several genes in healthy and cancer cells. This approach is promising to target specific cancer genes and for this purpose it is needed to pack such TALENs into viral vectors. There are some considerations which control the success of this approach, targeting appropriate sequences with efficient construction of TALENs being crucial factors. We face some obstacles in construction of TALENs; in this study we made a modification to the method of Cermk et al 2011 and added one step to make it easier and increase the availability of constructs.

Poly(DMAEMA-co-MPS) Coated Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles as Smart Drug Carriers with pH-controlled on-off Release

        Mohammad Hegazy,Nahla Rahoui,Ahmed Abou- Elyazed,Diaa Eldin Fouad,Xin Huang,Yudong Huang 한국고분자학회 2019 폴리머 Vol.43 No.3

In this paper, pH-responsive nanocarriers based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) modified with the pH-sensitive polymer: poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) were constructed, characterized and tested to evaluate their efficacy as drug delivery systems (DDS). The hybrid nanocarriers were synthesized successfully via a simultaneous copolymerization reaction between two monomers; 2-dimethylamino-ethylmethacrylate (DMAEMA) and 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) within the mesopores of MSN. Exploiting the polymerizable moiety of MPS together with its alkoxysilane moity susceptible to condensation with silanols surface onto silica, MPS comonomer can act as a bridge for yielding a robust and simple hybrid consisting of MSN-P(DMAEMA-co-MPS). In addition, the grafted PDMAEMA serves as efficient gatekeeper to adjust the encapsulation and in vitro release of cargos loaded inside the pores by altering pH values of the medium. These hybrid nanoparticles showed a high loading capacity with quick release in acidic pH, which exists mainly in the diseases environments e.g. inflammatory and cancerous sites.

The Outcome of Radiofrequency Kyphoplasty in the Treatment of Vertebral Compression Fractures in Osteoporotic Patients

        Ramy Hegazy,Hesham El-Mowafi,Mahmood Hadhood,Yasser Hannout,Yasser Allam,Jeorg Silbermann 대한척추외과학회 2019 Asian Spine Journal Vol.13 No.3

Study Design: Retrospective study. Purpose: The study aims to assess the effectiveness and safety of radiofrequency (RF) kyphoplasty in the treatment of vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) in osteoporotic patients. Overview of Literature: Vertebroplasty and balloon kyphoplasty are established procedures for the treatment of osteoporotic VCFs. However, RF kyphoplasty is a new method which controls cement viscosity. Methods: We reviewed the results of 41 consecutive patients with 23 thoracic and 38 lumbar VCFs who underwent RF kyphoplasty. The study population included 14 males (34%) and 27 females (66%). The mean patients age was 78 years (range, 51–89 years), and the follow-up period was 1 year. Clinical and radiographic analyses were performed during follow-up at 6 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year. All patients were assessed clinically pre- and postoperative using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Radiological assessment with X-ray in two views preoperatively, postoperatively, and during follow-up visits. Results: The mean preoperative VAS was 8.7 (range, 5–10; standard deviation [SD], 1.2). Postoperatively, VAS decreased by 3.3 (range, 2–5; SD, 0.9). At the end of the follow-up, VAS decreased by 1.22 (range, 0–7; SD, 1.6). The mean preoperative ODI score was 85.9, decreasing to 9.6 postoperatively and improving to 18.4 during the 1-year follow-up. The mean local kyphotic angle was 9.04° before the procedure and decreased by a mean of 6.16° after the operation and at the end of the follow-up. The mean increase in vertebral body height was 3.3 mm postoperatively and after 1-year follow-up. The rate of cement leakage was 8% (five out of 61 levels of fracture). Conclusions: RF kyphoplasty is a safe and effective augmentation technique with an advantage of controlling the cement viscosity to minimize the risk of cement leakage. It also shortens operation time.

1-Dodecyl-4-(((3-morpholinopropyl)imino)methyl)pyridin-1-ium bromide as a novel corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel during phosphoric acid production

M.A. Hegazy,I. Aiad 한국공업화학회 2015 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.31 No.-

The corrosion inhibition properties of novel cationic surfactant on carbon steel in 7 M H3PO4 solutionhave been determined by weight loss, Tafel polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) methods. The results revealed that the synthesized cationic surfactant is a good corrosion inhibitor. The inhibition efficiency increases with increasing the inhibitor concentration but decreases with thetemperature increasing. The adsorption of inhibitor was found to obey the Langmuir adsorptionisotherm. Potentiodynamic polarization studies showed that the inhibitor acts as a mixed-type inhibitor. EIS results were analyzed to model inhibition process through appropriate equivalent circuit model.

Surgical Management of Ipsilateral Fracture of the Femur and Tibia in Adults (the Floating Knee): Postoperative Clinical, Radiological, and Functional Outcomes

Alaa M Hegazy 대한정형외과학회 2011 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.3 No.2

Background: This study evaluated the outcomes of surgical management of ipsilateral femoral and tibial fractures in adults. Methods: Fifteen patients (13 men, 2 women; mean age, 34.8 years; range, 18 to 65 years) were enrolled in this study. The fractures types were classified according to the classification by Fraser et al. as follows: type I (5), type IIa (3), IIb (4), IIc (3). Femur fractures were treated using locked intramedullary nails, plate-screws, or dynamic condylar screws, and tibia fractures were treated with an external fixator (in open fractures), or plate-screws, and locked intramedullary nailing. The mean follow-up duration was 2.2 years (range, 1.3 to 4 years). Results: The extent of bony union according to the Karlstrom criteria was as follows: excellent, 8; good, 4; acceptable, 2; poor, 1. Conclusions: The associated injuries and type of fracture (open, intra-articular, comminution) are prognostic factors in a floating knee. The best management of the associated injuries for good final outcome involves intramedullary nailing of both the fractures and postoperative rehabilitation.
