This paper aims to investigate Browning's generic experimentation taking place in Pauline. Although the poem has been entertaining relatively low critical attention due to its incoherence, it merits close analysis in the context of the generic development that transforms a conversation poem into a dramatic monologue. Browning’s Pauline resembles the conversation poem in that its speaker focuses on his own mental movement and invokes a female auditor in order to confess his feelings and thoughts. Yet, the speaker, who clearly shows the tendency toward self-supremacy in the beginning, increasingly realizes his own limit in connecting with the outer world. The speaker’s clear self-consciousness inserted later into the text renders the poem “double-voiced.” In addition, through the footnote added by Pauline in the middle of the text, the poem reveals a striking discrepancy between the speaker’s utterance and the female auditor’s reaction. Pauline in this poem does not function merely as a silent, passive recipient of the speaker’s monologue; rather, she becomes a reader and a critic, who possesses the potential to dialogize the poetic text. Pauline displays its author’s ambivalent view of Romanic poethood as well as the inherited poetic form. Diverging from the generic features of the conversation poem, it foreshadows the emergence of the dramatic monologue in Browning's later poetry.

율곡의 아동교육관에 관한 연구

실천적 교육과 함께 엄격한 도덕성을 중시했던 율곡은 마음을 집중하며 사물의 원리를 깊이 탐구하고, 일상에서 힘써 행해야 한다는 거경(居敬), 궁리(窮理), 역행(力行)을 교육의 방법으로 제시했다. 본 연구는 아동 인성교육의 올바른 행동 지침을 마련하고자 제안하였다. 이에 『율곡전서(栗谷全書)』의 「격몽요결」에 반영된 아동교육관의 의미를 파악하고, 율곡의 성리학적 이념인 거경, 궁리, 역행을 『예기』와 『논어』에 근거하는 구용과 구사의 연계를 통해 풀이하였다. 특히, 아동의 눈높이에 맞는 실천방법은 「소아수지」와의 연결고리를 찾아 활용방안을 연구하였다. 이처럼 율곡이 제시하는 교육과정은 현대 아동교육에서도 적절한 시사점을 제공하는 데에 타당성을 두고 있으며, 교육적 근거를 마련할 수 있는 모범적인 교육방법으로 해석할 수 있다. Yulgok, who emphasized strict morality as well as practical education proposed Geogyeong (居敬), Gungri (窮理), and Yeokhaeng (力行),which means exploring the principle of things deeply while concentrating ones mind and trying to work hard in everyday life, as a way for education. This study proposed this as a way to establish a right action guide for personality education for children. Accordingly, this study identified the meanings of the view on early childhood education reflected in the 「Gyeok-mong-yo-gyeol」of 『Yulgokjeonseo (栗谷全書)』and interpreted Geogyeong, Gungri, and Yeokhaeng - Yulgok’s neo-Confucianism concepts in association with the nine attitudes and nine ways of thinking that were based on 『Rites』 and 『Analects』. Significantly, the practical method suited to children’s eye level was studied in consideration of its utilization method by finding the link with the 「So-a-su-ji (or a guideline on early childhood education)」. In this way, the educational process provided by Yulgok also has useful implications for early childhood education today, and can be interpreted as an exemplary educational method for which a sound basis can be established.

최인훈의 『태풍』에 나타난 ‘비밀’의 서사 전략 연구

본고는 최인훈의 『태풍』에서 태풍의 이동 경로와 함께 비밀의 서사 전략에 주목하였다. 『태풍』에는 정체성의 ‘비밀’을 간직한 인물과 특수한 ‘비밀’의 공간과 비밀스러운 사랑이 그려져 있다. 이러한 비밀의 서사 전략은 작가가 의도적으로 사용한 애너그램에서부터 시작된다. 나라 이름의 애너그램 사용은 제목인 태풍과 함께, 고착된 것에 균열을 내는 것이면서 어떤 것도 절대적일 수 없다는 사실을 상징한다. 자기 기만에서 자기 갱신에 이르는 비밀의 서사 과정은 정신적 방황의 태풍, 전쟁이라는 국가적 태풍, 그리고 자연 재해인 물리적 태풍과 자연스럽게 겹쳐져 있다. 주인공에게 허위와 무지를 벗어나게 하는 것은 패전의 비밀 메시지이다. 비밀의 메시지는 말이나 글, 그리고 사건을 매개로 하여 전달되고 해독된다. 이러한 비밀의 서사 전략을 통해 감추어져 있던 진실이 밝혀진다. ‘태풍’이라는 카오스를 지나면서 주인공은 다른 자리, 다른 이름, 다른 역할로 탈바꿈한다. 『태풍』은 특별한 권력을 가진 한 개인이 아니라, ‘아무나’가 주인공일 수 있는 시대의 가능성에 대해서 예견하고 있다. 즉 이름도 개명할 수 있다는 것, 여러 국적을 지니고도 살아갈 수 있다는 것, 다문화 가족과 더불어 살아가는 것도 대안이 될 수 있다는 것 등 우리의 시각을 새로운 관점에서 재형성하고 있다. 태풍은 삶과 죽음의 경계를 무너뜨리고 모든 것을 뒤섞는다. 그러므로 태풍 속의 자리는 삶과 죽음이 뒤섞이는 곳, 약자와 강자의 자리가 이동하는 곳, 지배자와 피지배자의 위치가 바뀌는 곳, 희망과 절망이 교차하는 곳이다. 모든 것은 태풍의 흐름처럼 유동적이다. 오토메나크와 아만다의 사랑의 관계 또한 태풍의 경로처럼 유동적이다. 선과 악은 해체되고, 죄의식과 수치심에 휩싸였던 주인공은 결국 자기 갱신에 이른다. 그러므로 태풍은 모든 편견이나 선입견에서 벗어나게 하고, 모든 가치를 전도하게 하고, 중심과 주변을 가로지르게 한다. 『태풍』에서 ‘비밀’의 서사전략 중 우연의 요소는 정신적 방황을 거쳐 주인공이 역사적 주체로 다시 태어날 수 있게 하는 데 필수적이다. 거대한 역사 앞에서 무력한 개인이 필연적으로 우연과 만나게 되는 비밀스러운 삶의 아이러니를 발견할 수 있다. 오토메나크는 예측 불가능한 태풍을 겪고 난 후 혼돈과 마주하면서 진실을 깨닫고 다르게 실천하는 힘을 지니게 된다. This paper focused on the narrative strategy of the secret along with the course of the typhoon in Choi In-hun's Typhoon. A person who has the ‘secret’ of his identity, a special ‘secret’ space, and secret love are described in the novel. The strategy begins with anagrams that the writer deliberately used. Using anagrams in the name of the country shows that nothing is absolute by giving them some breaches, like the meaning of the title ‘typhoon’. The strategy, which has developed from self-deception to self-renewal, naturally overlaps with many kinds of typhoons such as spiritual wandering, wars among nations, and a real typhoon. It is a secret message about defeat of a war that could free the main character from his falsehood and ignorance. The message is transferred and deciphered by words, sentences, and incidents. And the hidden truth is revealed. While going through chaos called ‘typhoon’, the main character Otomenaku can move himself into another seat, another name, and another role. Typhoon predicts the possibility of an era in which ‘anyone’ can be a main character, not just an individual with special power. For example, we can change our names. We can live with several nationalities. And a multicultural family can be an option. Like these, Typhoon reforms our perspective into a new one. A typhoon breaks a boundary between life and death, and mix everything together. That is, a typhoon is the very place where life and death are muddled up, the weak and the strong switch their seats, the positions of the ruler and the ruled are changed, and hope and despair are mixed. Everything is as fluid as a typhoon like the relationship between Otomenaku and Amanda. Good and evil are dismantled, and Otomenaku, wrapped in the sense of guilt and shame, eventually leads to self-renewal. Therefore, A typhoon has the power to remove prejudice and bias, reverse all values, and traverse the center and the periphery. A chance is part of the narrative strategy of the secret. It is essential for the main character to reborn as a historical subject through spiritual wandering. An individual, who is helpless in the face of a huge history, inevitably meets a chance. It is a mysterious irony of life. With the experience of an unpredictable typhoon, Otomenaku can have the power to face chaos, know the truth, and practice it in another way.

A Comparative Study of Social Network Tools for Analysing Chinese Elites

For accurately analysing and forecasting the social networks of China's political, economic and social power elites, it is necessary to develop a database that collates their information. The development of such a database involves three stages: data definition, data collection and data quality maintenance. The present study recommends distinctive solutions in overcoming the challenges that occur in existing comparable databases. We used organizational and event factors to identify the Chinese power elites to be included in the database, and used their memberships, social relations and interactions in combination with flows data collection methodologies to determine the associations between them. The system can be used to determine the optimal relationship path (i.e., the shortest path) to reach a target elite and to identify of the most important power elite in a social network (e.g., degree, closeness and eigenvector centrality) or a community (e.g., a clique or a cluster). We have used three social network analysis tools (i.e., R, UCINET and NetMiner) in order to find the important nodes in the network. We compared the results of centrality rankings of each tool. We found that all three tools are providing slightly different results of centrality. This is because different tools use different algorithms and even within the same tool there are various libraries which provide the same functionality (i.e., ggraph, igraph and sna in R that provide the different function to calculate centrality). As there are chances that the results may not be the same (i.e. centrality rankings indicating the most important nodes can be varied), we recommend a comparison test using different tools to get accurate results.

Novel Approaches for Efficient Antifungal Drug Action

The emergence of multidrug-resistant microorganisms, as well as fungal infectious diseases that further threaten health, especially in immunodeficient populations, is a major global problem. The development of new antifungal agents in clinical trials is inferior to the incidence of drug resistance, and the available antifungal agents are restricted. Their mechanisms aim at certain characteristics of the fungus in order to avoid biological similarities with the host. Synthesis of the cell wall and ergosterol are mainly targeted in clinical use. The need for new approaches to antifungal therapeutic agents or development alternatives has increased. This review explores new perspectives on mechanisms to effectively combat fungal infections and effective antifungal activity. The clinical drug have a common feature that ultimately causes caspase-dependent cell death. The drugs-induced cell death pathway is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, including mitochondrial membrane depolarization and cytochrome c release. This mechanism of action also reveals antimicrobial peptides, the primary effector molecules of innate systems, to highlight new alternatives. Furthermore, drug combination therapy is suggested as another strategy to combat fungal infection. The proposal for a new approach to antifungal agents is not only important from a basic scientific point of view, but will also assist in the selection of molecules for combination therapy.

The Visual Display of Temporal Information for E-Textbook: Incorporating the Mind-mapped Timeline Authoring Tool

With the ever-increasing queries related to temporal (or time-related) information, such as the product launching time, in search engine, most web pages will be augmented with such information in the future. Meanwhile, the gradual emergence of the use of electronic textbooks (or e-Textbooks), which enrich the traditional paper-based textbooks with multimedia contents such as interactive quizzes and multimedia-based simulations, has led us to infer that e-Textbooks will be blended with temporal information to support learning. The use of temporal information helps teachers and students to understand the level of prior knowledge required to study a topic, as well as the sequence of learning activities and related sub-topics, that best attains the educational goals. This paper presents a simple yet efficient tool called TimeMap, which is based on mind mapping, to create an e-Textbook called TimeBook that takes account of time-related curriculum and the ability of students to learn via collaboration.
