      • Identifying Criteria for a Physical Literacy Screening Task: An Expert Delphi Process

        Heather L. Rotz(Heather L. Rotz ),Anastasia Alpous(Anastasia Alpous ),Charles Boyer(Charles Boyer ),Patricia E. Longmuir(Patricia E. Longmuir ) 사피엔시아 2020 Exercise Medicine Vol.4 No.-

Objectives: REACH (Recreation, Education, Allied-health, Coaching, Healthcare) leaders support children’s physical literacy journey in diverse settings. This project sought physical literacy screening tool criteria that REACH leaders could use to assess children. Methods: A 3-round expert Delphi process sought consensus (75% of participants stating agree/strongly agree) regarding physical literacy screening. Group discussions (Round 1) identified screening issues. Qualitative analyses represented the issues as statements. Experts rated each statement (5-point Likert scale) in Rounds 2 and 3. Mean Round 2 rating for each statement was provided in Round 3. Results: 53 experts were invited to participate with 37 (63% female, mean career length = 16 years) providing consent. Each round comprised at least 7 experts with primary/secondary expertise for each sector. Round 1 identified 60 criteria and 27 potential screening tasks, which were represented in 90 statements. Consensus was achieved for 44/90 statements in Round 2 and 51/90 statements in Round 3. Conclusions: Expert consensus suggests that physical literacy screening should utilize both objectively measured tasks and questionnaires. Encompassing multiple facets of physical literacy, including motor competence, motivation, strength, endurance, and daily behavior, is important. Research is required to identify potential tasks that meet these criteria and are suitable for each REACH sector.

Building the Frequency Profile of the Core Promoter Element Patterns in the Three ChromHMM Promoter States at 200-bp Intervals: A Statistical Perspective

2015 Genomics & informatics Vol.13 No.4

Recently, the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) Analysis Working Group converted data from ChIP-seq analyses from the Broad Histone track into 15corresponding chromatic maps that label sequences with different kinds of histone modifications in promoter regions. Here, we publish a frequency profile of the three ChromHMM promoter states, at 200-bp intervals, with particular reference to the existence of sequence patterns of promoter elements, GC-richness, and transcription starting sites. Through detailed and diligent analysis of promoter regions, researchers will be able to uncover new and significant information about transcription initiation and gene function.

Reviving Questions of Authenticity (I) : The Case of American Folk Musician Gillian Welch

Vol.47 No.-

Most analyses of historical or contemporary folk music, at one level address issues of authenticity, directly or indirectly. Having studied and written about Korean music for more than a decade now, I find that whether researching traditional or newly created (changjak) pansori, traditional or fusion gugak, or the globalization of sound and identity, a consistent underlying question is that of “what is authentic Korean music?” With the recent trend among many traditional Korean musicians to experiment with instrumentation, harmonization, and presentation of gugak for contemporary audiences, this topic takes on an even deeper, more profound meaning. My point has never been to dismiss that which is may be deemed by some as “inauthentic,” but rather to questions the very labels, categorizations, and presumptions that accompany the concept of authenticity. In order to better understand my interest in a so-called "authentic" sound, presentation and experience of Korean music, I propose a two-part article. Here, I wish to address the issue of authenticity not directly in Korean music, but as I was first confronted with the idea some fifteen years ago while concentrating my studieson contemporary American folk music. The reason for doing so is that in the United States, and the United Kingdom as well, this is a highly contestable subject that has been bitterly debated for nearly a hundred years; as such there is a great deal of relevant research and writing that can be referenced. Building on this foundation, I will subsequently present a second article that will turn the lens of authenticity onto the subject of contemporary Korean folk music performances. In order to best understand the issue of authenticity as it relates to folk music, however, we must first begin with an even more basic question, at least as it applies to the American folk scene.

Observational Study of the Impact of COVID-19 on Sleep in Children With and Without Special Educational Needs

        Heather Elphick,Philippa Howsley,Nathaniel Mills,Vicki Beevers,Lisa Artis 대한수면연구학회 2022 Journal of sleep medicine Vol.19 No.2

Objectives: Children and young people (CYP) with special educational needs (SEN) are more likely to experience disturbed sleep and poor mental wellbeing. This study explored the differential impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the sleep and mental wellbeing of CYP with and without SEN.Methods: The National Institute of Health Research Children and Young People MedTech Cooperative, Sheffield Children’s National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust, and The Sleep Charity carried out an online survey between June 23, 2020, and August 17, 2020. The 77-item survey was shared on social media platforms. Results: A total of 559 participants were included in the analyses, and 15.74% of them reported having CYP with SEN. While sleep changes due to the pandemic were largely similar for both groups, CYP with SEN were more likely to get up or wake up during the night than those without SEN (40.91% vs. 27.18%). CYP with SEN were significantly more likely than those without SEN to be demotivated (61.44% vs. 31.57%), sad and tearful (36.15% vs. 19.35%), or anxious and stressed (41.67% vs. 18.54%) during the pandemic, and the increased anxiety was more likely to contribute to poorer sleep (43.48% vs. 14.82%).Conclusions: While the majority of CYP in both groups reported sleep changes due to the pandemic, CYP with SEN experienced more sleep disturbance. The findings provide initial evidence to suggest that the pandemic may have had a greater impact on the sleep and mental wellbeing of CYP with SEN than those without SEN.

Digging up the Roots : Understanding What is Meant by the Term “Folk Music”

Vol.20 No.1

Unlike many of my contemporaries who were listening to the latest pop music in the 1970s and 1980s, I had always been drawn to what was labeled as “folk music,” through the sounds of the Weavers, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, the Limelighters, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, among others. As a graduate student in New York City in the mid-1990s, that fascination grew stronger as I was surrounded by a vibrant folk scene, and even participated in open mike performances. But I quickly became aware of distinct, and oft times opposing groups of musicians, who loosely aligned themselves with one of two musical movements, namely Fast Folk and the Anti-Folk. This article is the first of two that will explore the NYC folk scene of that era, and how it got that way. Here, I will explore what is meant by the nebulous, and sometimes contentious term “folk music.” The second, forthcoming article will more fully address the Folk and the Anti-Folk.

      • To Make Live : Representing and Protesting Refugee Agency

2016 Localities Vol.6 No.-

Dominant representations of refugees emphasize either refugees as victims or as threats. In the shifts since the outset of the refugee regime, the political agency of refugees has stopped being something to celebrate and is now read as threatening – particularly when that agency is expressed in the choice to move and to cross borders. This control of political agency represents a particular form of governmentality, which maintains a biopolitical order that is framed around the structures of citizenship. The resulting exclusion of refugees as non-citizens has created what is called here a necropolitical outside, where the power over death remains the crucial moment of decision and which can be seen most clearly in the Mediterranean. Nevertheless, in developing patterns of refugee protest and occupation throughout Europe this exclusion is being contested as refugees establish themselves as political subjects in their own right, challenging the order with new forms of conduct and ‘making themselves live’ by making themselves visible.

Cardiovascular effects of resveratrol supplementation atrest and during exercise in humans

( Heather L Clifton ),( Hyun Bae Kim ),( Jong Kyung Kim ),( Charles L Stebbins ) 한국운동영양학회 2012 Physical Activity and Nutrition (Phys Act Nutr) Vol.16 No.4

Resveratrol is a polyphenol found in food sources such as peanuts, berries, grapes and red wine. It has been touted for, among other actions, beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system. Consequently, it has been marketed as a nutritional supplement for healthy individuals. Using a double-blind, crossover design, we tested the hypothesis that chronic supplementation with resveratrol attenuates blood pressure at rest and during skeletal muscle contraction and augments endothelial function and exercise-induced increases in skeletal muscle blood flow in this group.Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), endothelial function (evaluated via flow mediated dilation) brachial artery diameter (ultrasound) and rhythmic forearm contraction-induced increases in skeletal muscle blood flow (Doppler/ultrasound) were assessed before and after chronic (500 mg/day for 28-32 days, n = 14) supplementation with resveratrol. Compared to placebo, resveratrol supplementation had modest effects on resting MAP(82 ± 2 vs. 80 ± 2 mmHg) (P < 0.05). However, no effects of this polyphenol were seen on HR, flow mediated dilation or exercise-induced increases in MAP, brachial artery diameter or blood flow. We concluded that 30 days of supplementation with a commercially available dose of resveratrol (500 mg/day) have minimal, if any, beneficial cardiovascular effects in healthy individuals and do not improve endothelial or cardiovascular function during exercise.

Full Range Leadership and Leadership Development Experiences in Public Parks and Recreation Organizations

Vol.40 No.2

Purpose: As the public parks and recreation industry grows, there is a need to develop leaders at all levels. The purpose of this survey study was to determine the self-perceived type of leadership professionals use in the public parks and recreation field and to examine the relationship between types of leadership development methods and transformational leadership. Research design, data, and methodology: Public parks and recreation professionals of all employment levels from throughout California were solicited to participate in the quantitative, self-administered, online survey. The survey consisted of three parts: Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire to determine the level of leadership each respondent uses from the Full Range Leadership model, leadership development experience questions, and demographic questions. The analysis included descriptive statistics such as mean scores and Spearman’s Rank Order Correlation. Results: Results indicate that transformational leadership is used more often by public parks and recreation professionals in California than that of transactional or Laissez-Faire leadership. Results also indicated that public parks and recreation professionals do use all three types to varying levels. Multiple relationships were found between leadership development experiences and self-perceived use of transformational leadership. Conclusions: These results can support public parks and recreation organizations, universities, and California Park and Recreation Society as they continue to provide leadership development to the profession
