Upcycling is a sustainable way to recycle waste resources and solve the global problem of environmental pollution. Upcycling is now attracting attention as fiberization and the disposal of waste clothing have become a serious issue. However, the customer's willingness to purchase upcycled products should be increased by propagating that the product value of a reborn commodity is of high value; these products are meant for new purposes and prepared with recycled materials. In this study, we created 11 designer items by applying an eco-friendly concept in the design process of upcycled textiles and products. From 2020 to 2021, a PBL(Problem Based Learning) curriculum was taught in design planning classes. The final 11 design items were derived after developing an eco-friendly product design for upcycled textiles. These final items were as follows: 5 fashion bags, 3 dog products, 1 clothing, 1 fashion accessory, and 1 sanitary mask design. In order to develop only one aesthetic design idea for upcycling, we considered the following features: user-centered convenience, functionality, and practicality. Then, tie-dye, drawing, patchwork, and embroidery were used to create innovative design items. The product design of recycled materials is based on high functionality, waterproofing, and the use of organic natural materials. The results of this study indicate that the creative product design of upcycling has contributed to a sustainable and eco-friendly environment. Related research studies must be conducted for innovating the continuous design process of the future.

Mosquitoes have adapted to various environmental conditions. Symbionts with mosquitoes impact this adaptation in different environments. In the field, mosquitoes could get exposed to antibiotics during their developmental period, which could reduce or eliminate their symbiotic microbes. However, the side effects of the antibiotics on the ovary and reproductive physiology of the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the effects of tetracycline and combinations of rifampicin and tetracycline at environmentally acceptable levels on the reproductive physiology of ovaries in Ae. albopictus. Rifampicin and tetracycline in combination reduced the hatching rate and fertility of Ae. albopictus compared to the untreated control group. These antibiotics induced histopathological damage and reactive oxygen species production in the ovaries. The combination of antibiotics decreased the expression of surface protein of Wolbachia (WSP) in Ae. albopictus. Additionally, the expression of Toll like receptor 2 (TLR2) and Myd88 were triggered by the combinations. The findings demonstrate the detrimental effects of antibiotics, particularly combinations of rifampicin and tetracycline, on the reproductive capacity of Ae. albopictus females.

The purpose of this study is to examine the compensatory role of instrumental (e.g., product information) and aesthetic (e.g., website background) online cues presented within apparel websites where touch is unavailable. The moderating role of two need for touch (NFT) dimensions (i.e., autotelic and instrumental NFT) between online cues and consumer responses was also investigated. Results demonstrate that personal differences in autotelic and instrumental NFT moderate the relationship between online cues and affective responses. It was found that consumers high in autotelic NFT (i.e., who need to touch for fun) seek more instrumental cues to compensate for lack of touch when shopping apparel products online. Surprisingly, consumers high in instrumental NFT (i.e., who need to touch for product evaluation) use aesthetic as well as instrumental cues to supplement the absence of touch. In contrast, for the low NFT groups, only aesthetic online cues showed significant effects on consumer arousal. Further analysis shows that instrumental NFT is negatively related to purchase intention while autotelic NFT has a positive effect on purchase intention. This implies that need for hedonic-oriented touch is no longer a barrier for online apparel shopping. However, the instrumental NFT seems a significant obstacle for the adoption of online apparel purchasing.

This paper analyzes how Harriet Beecher Stowe represents Sojourner Truth in her essay “Sojourner Truth, The Libyan Sibyl.” Not so much does Stowe’s representation tell about Truth, my argument is, as it does about the author herself. Stowe reveals her attitude toward racial issues and women's question of the time thorough her representation of Truth. Firstly Stowe otherizes Truth by emphasizing her blackness and Africanness. She describes Truth using “bad English” which is differentiated from good one she and her colleagues use. In a similar context, Stowe consistently compares Truth to statues, reducing her living energy and spiritual charisma to a fixed thing. Secondly, Stowe attempts to strengthen her own argument against suffrage movement by appropriating Truth’s opinion of bloomer, the suffragettes’ dressing. Finally, Stowe calls Truth as an epithet, “The Libyan Sibyl,” which effectively performs ambivalent function of embracing her as a prophetess within Christian tradition, but still imbuing Truth with mysticism and heresy. In conclusion, Stowe’s “Sojourner Truth, The Libyan Sibyl” represents Truth as a mysterious African figure, who is essentially different from the typical reasonable white readers rather than a peer abolitionist. Stowe’s essay reveals her conservativeness and shows adroitness as a popular writer in that she presents Truth as an acceptable figure to American middle-class white readers.

This paper explores how Pixar’s animation film Wall-E presents a possibility of a newly assembled relationship among human and non- human beings against the backdrop of apocalyptic garbage dystopia. In Wall-E’s narrative, the titular robot hero, Wall-E, has cleaned the waste-covered and therefore uninhabitable Earth for 700 years, developing human qualities like preference and desire through every day’s labor and movement. Meanwhile, human beings on board the spaceship Axiom have lost their humanity indulgent in conveniences provided by technology and consumerism. This paper notes that the Axiom’s return to the earth is achieved through cooperation among human, machine, and things, and that they coevolve in the history they cowrite after the return. Auto, a navigator robot which obstructs people’s return, represents a pessimistic scenario in which superintelligence is prone to instrumental convergence, which prioritizes its own goal regardless of human welfare or safety. While Wall-E provides great insight on the relationship between human and machine, its gender perspective is subject to criticism in that male and female are eventually fixed to their traditional gender roles. This regression, beyond being a minor weakness, implies that there still functions the anthropocentric thinking, which underlay the destruction of the Earth, and betokens that this newly begun history is likely to follow the similar steps to apocalypse.

This paper analyzes how Sojourner Truth, an iconic figure in the 19th century abolition and suffrage movement, becomes a political subject in Rancièrean sense, negotiating and compromising her status under interlocking oppressions. In 1851, giving a speech in Ohio Women’s Rights Convention, she asks a question, “Ain’t I a Woman?” While this question has been interpreted to claim black women’s womanhood, which has been often denied, or differentiated from that of white women, this paper finds that this question aims at double targets, male audience and white female audience. As the question disrupts binary opposition between male and female by presenting an image of a black woman who is strong as much as man, it also brings out a black woman’s experience, which is regularly overlooked in white women’s feminism. Sixteen years later, in 1867, Truth gives a speech in American Equal Rights Association. Suffrage movement was on the verge of divide over the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment, which permitted voting right to black men. Truth, apparently taking no side, and therefore leaving room for any side to interpret her position in their favor, points out, “not a word about the colored women.” Through this comment, borrowing Rancière’s expression, Truth inscribes herself as a political subject, arousing disagreement over the agenda of the discussion and qualifications of the legitimate participants.
