Yogurt: Effect on Leukocytes and Blood Coagulation in an Acute Liver Injury Model
Haro, Cecilia,Lazarte, Sandra,Zelaya, Hortensia,Alvarez, Susana,Aguero, Graciela The Korean Society of Food Science and Nutrition 2009 Journal of medicinal food Vol.12 No.4
This study determined whether cow or goat yogurt administration has a preventive effect on the hepatic damage undergone during an acute liver injury. Acute liver injury was induced by an intraperitoneal injection of d-galactosamine. Groups of mice were fed with cow or goat yogurt for 2 days or 7 days before the d-galactosamine injection. Blood and liver samples were obtained 12 hours after d-galactosamine inoculation. d-Galactosamine induced an increase in serum aminotransaminases, a reduction in the number of blood leukocytes, an enhancement in neutrophil myeloperoxidase activity, a recruitment of leukocytes toward the liver, an increase in cell death, and an alteration in prothrombin time, activated partialthromboplastin time, and fibrinogen levels. Treatment with cow or goat yogurt was effective at increasing leukocyte number and decrease myeloperoxidase activity. We also observed a decrease in leukocyte accumulation in the liver and a reduction in cell death. Activated partial thromboplastin time and fibrinogen were normalized, but prothrombin time only showed an improvement without reaching normal values. Cow or goat yogurts were effective at protecting against an experimental acute liver injury, especially when administered for 7 days.
Germanium coating boosts lithium uptake in Si nanotube battery anodes

<P>Si nanotubes for reversible alloying reaction with lithium are able to accommodate large volume changes and offer improved cycle retention and reliable response when incorporated into battery anodes. However, Si nanotube electrodes exhibit poor rate capability because of their inherently low electron conductivity and Li ion diffusivity. Si/Ge double-layered nanotube electrodes show promise to improve structural stability and electrochemical kinetics, as compared to homogeneous Si nanotube arrays. The mechanism explaining the enhancement in the rate capabilities is revealed here by means of electrochemical impedance methods. The Ge shell efficiently provides electrons to the active materials, which increase the semiconductor conductivity thereby assisting Li+ ion incorporation. The charge transfer resistance which accounts for the interfacial Li+ ion intake from the electrolyte is reduced by two orders of magnitude, indicating the key role of the Ge layer as an electron supplier. Other resistive processes hindering the electrode charge–discharge process are observed to show comparable values for Si and Si/Ge array electrodes.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Interfacial charge transfer resistance accounting for Li intake extremely reduced by conductive germanium coating of Si nanotubes. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c4cp02377c'> </P>

This study investigated the motion responses and flooding behavior of a damaged passenger ship model, using numerical simulations of fluid dynamics and six degrees of freedom motion. The test condition was based on the safe return to port regulations, and the numerical investigation was performed by solving unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, using CFDShip-Iowa program and SUGGAR++ library. The selected hull form was scaled model of a passenger ship provided by the Ship Stability Research Center at the University of Strathclyde, UK. A damaged compartment was located amidships. Computed ship motions in head and following seas in regular wave train were analyzed by fast Fourier transform and the computation results of the pitch, heave, and roll motions and the advance speed were compared with experimental data in the same test condition. The pitch and heave motions by the numerical analysis agreed well with the experimental results, but the computation overpredicted roll motions at the natural roll frequency. In head seas conditions, the advance speed was overpredicted, regardless of the wave amplitude and period. In addition, flow behavior around the course-keeping model was investigated, in terms of the free-surface wave, hull wake, and flooding behavior.
Photochemical behaviour of an acid-terminated azopolymer in solution and in Langmuir–Blodgett films
Marta Haro,Ana Villares,Ignacio Gascón,Santiago Martín,Luis Oriol,Pilar Cea 한국물리학회 2010 Current Applied Physics Vol.10 No.3
Trans–cis–trans isomerization processes of an acid-terminated azopolymer have been investigated in mono and multilayered Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films and the results compared with the behaviour of this azopolymer in solution. UV–vis spectroscopy was used to determine the apparent extent of photoisomerization at the photostationary state, as well as the order and rate constant of the cis→trans thermal isomerization, whilst structural changes of the LB films during photoisomerization have been monitored by AFM microscopy. From these studies it was concluded that the trans → cis photoisomerization extent largely depends on the free volume around the azobenzene chromophores, with the smaller apparent extent of photoisomerization obtained for a well-organized 10-layer LB film. Data also revealed a first-order kinetics for the thermal cis→trans isomerization process of the azopolymer both in solution and in LB films. The cis→trans isomerization process depends on the balance between the stress produced by the larger cross-section of cis-isomers inside the system and the interactions between cis-isomers and neighbouring molecules. The slowest cis→trans isomerization process takes place in a 35-layer LB film, whilst LB films with well-packed azobenzene layers show faster cis→trans isomerization processes.
The Mexican Economic Crisis of 1982 and the Brazilian Economic Crisis of 1999
Ana Ligia Haro Maza(아나 리히아 아로 마사),John Hogan(존호건) 한국라틴아메리카학회 2009 라틴아메리카연구 Vol.22 No.2
This paper utilises a new critical juncture framework to help us determine whether changes to Mexican macroeconomic policy in the early 1980s, and Brazilian macroeconomic policy at the turn of the century, were clean breaks with the past, or continuations of previously established policy pathways. The framework consists of three elements, which must be identified in sequence in order to declare, with some certainty, if an event was a critical juncture. These are crisis, ideational change, and radical policy change.

This study was performed to investigate the effect of Agave tequilana Weber inulin on postprandial ghrelin levels in obese patients. A randomized, double-blind, cross-over design was performed. A total of 14 patients were allocated into two groups: one group received a drink that contained 500 mL lemon water, 24 g of A. tequilana Weber inulin, and 75 g glucose and the other group received a placebo drink with 500 mL lemon drink and 75 g of glucose. After a 7-day washout period, the groups were crossed. The primary outcome measure was postprandial ghrelin levels between minute 240 and minute 270. A. tequilana Weber inulin did not change postprandial ghrelin concentration in obese patients.

This essay presents some main features of the kick-off of 5G in India and Brazil extracting implication for Global South catchup. Based on some main neo-Schumpeterian contributions on long-waves, long-cycles, and catch-up, attention has been paid to the interstate competition between the US and China, the global pressures and linkages of the Indian and Brazilian National Systems of Innovation, and the development of key infrastructures and productive capabilities by the domestic and multinational firms involved in the kick-off of 5G. Two main Global South cases capturing the interrelated geopolitical and technological tensions of the 21st century transitioning capitalism are discussed.
