        Hana. Vol.2021 No.10

Aim(s): To evaluate a Health Coaching based Diabetes Self-management (HC-DSM) program for community dwelling older adults. Method(s): A randomized controlled trial was conducted on 50 older adults with diabetes who were recruited from a senior center in Seoul. The participants were randomly assigned to either an 8-week HC-DSM program or a 4-week usual education program on diabetes. In the final analysis, 23 participants were included in the experimental group and 22 in the control group. Questionnaire surveys were used to measure diabetes self-management self-efficacy, knowledge, goal attainments, behavior change, health status, and health related quality of life. Statistical analysis included generalized estimation equations, independent t-test, and χ2 test. In addition, qualitative data were collected to analyze the fidelity of the program and examine the experience of the participants. Result(s): The intervention group had significant improved diabetes self-management self-efficacy(p<.001), knowledge(p=.039), goal attainments(p=.020), behavior change (stage of change(p=.002), monitoring(p=.039), and reducing risks(p=.002)), health status (HbA1c(p=.006) and the diabetes distress scale(p=.005)), and the health related quality of life (EQ-VAS(p<.001)). Conclusion(s): The HC-DSM program may be a feasible intervention that contributes to health promotion by empowering community dwelling older adults with diabetes to take responsibility for their own health and self-management.

      • Learning from Active Learning: expanding the scope of interpretation skills training

Vol.2022 No.01

This proposal highlights the value of expanding the scope of interpretation skills training in the context of an undergraduate language curriculum by introducing the approaches taken by the instructor affiliated with the Center for Global Communication Strategies at the University of Tokyo. The course on Japanese-English interpretation skills is offered primarily for students enrolled at the university’s Program in English at Komaba (PEAK) who were educated in English while developing their Japanese language as a heritage language at home. The course aims to equip students with advanced communication skills through interpretation training rather than training professional interpreters. The overarching goal is to enable students to achieve valuable life skills. While the course leans on building blocks of conventional interpreter training to achieve that goal, its premise is that interpretation skills are essentially advanced communication skills. For example, simultaneous interpretation enables rapid determination of the main thrust of the information captured aurally and visually. Consecutive interpretation is the ability to temporarily deconstruct the information presented and deliver it in a meaningful manner. Sight translation is another form of digesting information in manageable chunks by overcoming the significant difference in sentence structure between the two languages. Interpretation skills training enables learners to contextualize vocabulary, vary language register, enunciate clearly, be mindful of meaning while always directing attention to the audience, all of which are valuable life skills. This proposal will also demonstrate the value of gaining insights from other related disciplines such as ESL to break down the learning process into different aspects of English as vocabulary and grammar. This approach is notably viable if the interpretation skills course is part of a broader language curriculum. The proposal will also address active learning strategies that were effective in the University of Tokyo course to improve the course quality and foster a student-centered classroom with special attention given to the virtual environment. Effective and Intact Cell Detachment from a Clinically Ubiquitous Culture Flask by Combining Ultrasonic Wave Exposure and Diluted Trypsin

        Hanako Tauchi,Chikahiro Imashiro,Taiki Kuribara,Genichiro Fujii,Yuta Kurashina,Kiichiro Totani,KenjiroTakemura 한국생물공학회 2019 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.24 No.3

Bioengineering research and applications are supported by cell culture technologies that produce a large number of homogeneous cells. However, trypsin used in the general culture procedure for cell detachment decreases cell activity and culture efficiency. Furthermore, manually conducted culture procedures, especially pipetting after trypsin treatment, can induce inhomogeneous mechanical stress in cells, which may influence cellular functions. Alternate detachment methods using specialized culture devices without trypsin and/or manual pipetting have been reported. However, conventional trypsinization is still widely used. Diluted trypsin increases culture efficiency. Therefore, we developed a cell-detaching method using diluted trypsin and ultrasonic vibration for cell detachment from ubiquitous culture vessels. To demonstrate our concept, we used a T25 flask. Vibration of the culture surface was excited by ultrasonic waves propagated from an ultrasonic transducer placed under the flask. Using the proposed method, cells were completely detached by diluted trypsin, whereas 8.6% of cells remained on the flask with manual pipetting. The viability and proliferation of cells detached by the proposed method were higher than those of cells detached by the conventional method, owing to the low concentration of trypsin. Furthermore, glucose consumption after detachment showed no abnormality, eliminating possible oncogenesis. Two membrane proteins were quantified immediately after detachment and at 24 h of culture, and there were no differences between the detachment methods. Thus, we conclude that our proposed method improves culture efficiency without any adverse effects and ensures homogeneous mechanical stress on cells.

      • Structural Analysis of High Performance Ion-Gel Comprising Tetra-PEG Network

        Asai, Hanako,Fujii, Kenta,Ueki, Takeshi,Sakai, Takamasa,Chung, Ung-il,Watanabe, Masayoshi,Han, Young-Soo,Kim, Tae-Hwan,Shibayama, Mitsuhiro American Chemical Society 2012 Macromolecules Vol.45 No.9

<P>The structure of Tetra-PEG ion gel, which is tetra-arm poly(ethylene glycol) (Tetra-PEG) network in ionic liquid (IL) and has recently established in our group and possesses high ion conductivity and high mechanical properties, was investigated as functions of polymer concentration (ϕ) and molecular weight (<I>M</I>w) by using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements. The results were compared with those of Tetra-PEG hydrogel. The macromer solutions of tetra-amine terminated PEG (TAPEG) macromers, which is one of the two constituents forming Tetra-PEG network, were found to interpenetrate each other in IL and exhibited a scaling relationship, ξ ∼ ϕ–3/4, where ξ is the correlation length. The SANS functions, <I>I</I>(<I>q</I>), for the ion gels made by cross-end-coupling of TAPEG and TNPEG (tetra-arm PEG with active ester groups) were represented by the so-called Ornstein–Zernike equation, suggesting absence of frozen inhomogeneites. The same scaling relationship to the macromer solutions, ξ ∼ ϕ–3/4, was also obtained for the ion gels. Furthermore, the SANS curves were superimposed to a single master curve with <I>I</I>(<I>q</I>)/ξ5/3ϕ vs <I>ξq</I> irrespective of <I>M</I>w and ϕ. In contrast, the Tetra-PEG ion gels made by reswelling of a dried hydrogel showed a large upturn, indicating that the ion gels made by the “re-swollen” method caused the network inhomogeneities.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/mamobx/2012/mamobx.2012.45.issue-9/ma300244u/production/images/medium/ma-2012-00244u_0001.gif'></P>

        Asai, Hanako,Fujii, Kenta,Ueki, Takeshi,Sawamura, Shota,Nakamura, Yutaro,Kitazawa, Yuzo,Watanabe, Masayoshi,Han, Young-Soo,Kim, Tae-Hwan,Shibayama, Mitsuhiro American Chemical Society 2013 Macromolecules Vol.46 No.3

<P>Upper critical solution temperature (UCST)-type phase separation behavior and its conformational change of well-defined poly(<I>N</I>-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAm) in deuterated room-temperature ionic liquid (IL), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (<I>d</I>8-[C2mIm+][TFSA–]), were investigated by means of dynamic light scattering (DLS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements. From the temperature dependence of time-averaged scattering intensity obtained by DLS, it was found that the cloud points of pNIPAm/<I>d</I>8-[C2mIm+][TFSA–] solutions increased with molecular weight (<I>M</I>w) and concentration. In addition, it was found that there are two relaxation modes of pNIPAm in the IL solutions. From SANS measurements, the radius of gyration, <I>R</I>g, and the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter, χ, were evaluated as a function of temperature during the phase separation.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/mamobx/2013/mamobx.2013.46.issue-3/ma3020273/production/images/medium/ma-2012-020273_0009.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ma3020273'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Vol.18 No.-

This paper examines the correspondence between negative polar words as adverbs and negative prefixes “미 (未)-, 비 (非)-, 불 / 부 (不)-, 무 (無)-”. It also considers the environment in which they respond from the perspective of comparing Japanese and Korean languages. The subject of consideration is the corpus. Specifically, it focuses on two points: (1) the semantic relationship of negative polar words between Japan and South Korea, and (2) the correspondence between those negative prefixes. From the perspective of negative polar words, we found out what negative polar words correspond to negative prefixes. It was also found that these negative polar words have a lot of common meanings between vocabularies and between Japanese and Korean languages. From the viewpoint of the negative prefix, the negative polar words correspond to “불 / 부 (不)-” and “무 (無)-” in both Japanese and Korean languages, and “미 (未)-” and “비 (非)-” was hardly seen. In addition, we were able to see the combination of these responses and the semantic functions of each.

Vol.19 No.-

Since the nomalization of diplomatic relation between Korea and Japan on 1965, many Korean music has been introduced in Japan. Moreover, the 40th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relation, as in year 2005, was announced as the fellowship year between the two countries. Performaces of Traditional music of two countries increased between the private organizations as well as musical interchanges. In this paper, I would like to examine the musical exchanges between two countries and how Korean Traditional Music introduced in Japan since year 2005. In conclusion, 5 different suggestions on the possible strategies on promoting Korean Traditional Music and its globalization will be provided at the end of the paper.

      • Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Study on Defect-Controlled Polymer Networks

        Nishi, Kengo,Asai, Hanako,Fujii, Kenta,Han, Young-Soo,Kim, Tae-Hwan,Sakai, Takamasa,Shibayama, Mitsuhiro American Chemical Society 2014 Macromolecules Vol.47 No.5

<P>Tetra-PEG gels are classified to near-“ideal” networks with significantly low inhomogeneities, which were confirmed by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). In this study, we systematically introduced two types of defects into Tetra-PEG gels and investigated effects of defects on structure. First, we prepared defect-rich networks by simply reducing prepolymer concentration, and observed the evolution of network structure by time-resolved SANS during gelation process. In this case, both the scattering intensity and the correlation length increased with reaction time in the ϕ < ϕ* region, while they scarcely changed in the ϕ > ϕ* region. Here, ϕ and ϕ* are the polymer volume fractions at observation and that at chain-overlap concentration, respectively. Second, we prepared “<I>p</I>-tuned” Tetra-PEG gels by tuning the reaction probability, <I>p</I>, and soaked them in water to expose the inhomogeneities. It was revealed that SANS profiles of as-prepared gels did not change noticeably, while those of swollen gels systematically changed with decreasing <I>p</I>. On the basis of these results, we discuss the relationship between the defects of polymer network and inhomogeneities by using simple schematic pictures of polymer network.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/mamobx/2014/mamobx.2014.47.issue-5/ma402590n/production/images/medium/ma-2013-02590n_0009.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ma402590n'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
