Natural Uranium and Thorium Isotopes in Sediment Cores Off Malaysian Ports
Abdul Hafidz Yusoff,Asnor Azrin Sabuti,Che Abd Rahim Mohamed 한국해양과학기술원 2015 Ocean science journal Vol.50 No.2
Sediment cores collected from three Malaysian marine ports, namely, Kota Kinabalu, Labuan and Klang were analyzed to determine the radioactivities of 234U, 238U, 230Th, 232Th and total organic carbon (TOC) content. The objectives of this study were to determine the factors that control the activity of uranium isotopes and identify the possible origin of uranium and thorium in these areas. The activities of 234U and 238U show high positive correlation with TOC at the middle of sediment core from Kota Kinabalu port. This result suggests that activity of uranium at Kota Kinabalu port was influenced by organic carbon. The 234U/238U value at the upper layer of Kota Kinabalu port was 1.14 while the ratio value at Labuan and Klang port was 1.14. These results suggest a reduction process occurred at Kota Kinabalu port where mobile U(VI) was converted to immobile U(IV) by organic carbon. Therefore, it can be concluded that the major input of uranium at Kota Kinabalu port is by sorptive uptake of authigenic uranium from the water column whereas the major inputs of uranium to Labuan and Klang port are of detrital origin. The ratio of 230Th/232Th was used to estimate the origin of thorium. Low ratio value (< 1.5) at Labuan and Klang ports support the suggestion that thorium from both areas were come from detrital input while the high ratio (> 1.5) of 230Th/232Th at Kota Kinabalu port suggest the anthropogenic input of 230Th to this area. The source of 230Th is probably from phosphate fertilizers used in the oil-palm cultivation in Kota Kinabalu that is adjacent to the Kota Kinabalu port.

In this work, the effect of various weight percentage of rice husk ash (RHA) in ceramic brick production was investigated interms of mineralogical, physical, chemical and morphological properties. The evaluation of the use of RHA as a raw materialfor ceramic products is tested to determine the linear shrinkage, volumetric shrinkage, water absorption, apparent density andbulk density. These physical results suggested that the addition of RHA can improve the physical properties of ceramic brick. Scanning electron microscopy images confirmed the increased of ceramic strength with the addition of RHA and firingtemperature. In addition, quantitative and qualitative chemical analysis supported the results obtained. Overall, the resultsdemonstrated the high potential of RHA in green technology for ceramic production.

The purpose of this study was to explain the influence of motivation, leadership, and discipline on the performance of the midwife at Sharia Hospital X in Central Java Indonesia before the Covid-19 pandemic. This research is a combination between quantitative research and qualitative research (mix method). The population in this study were all midwives sharia hospital x in central java Indonesia, totaling 75 people. The primary data in this study came from questionnaires, interviews, observation, and documentation, then from the results of the analysis and data processing the researcher interpreted it more deeply using qualitative methods. The results of this study conclude that motivation, leadership, and discipline are proven to have a positive and significant effect on the performance of midwives, thus it can be concluded that an increase in motivation, leadership, and discipline in work will be able to improve the performance of the midwifes Sharia Hospital X. These results give an understanding that every time there is an increase in motivation, leadership, and work discipline, it will increase the performance of the midwifes. Motivation is the biggest variable affecting the performance, leadership is the second and work discipline is the smallest variable that affects the performance of midwives.

Rapid development in the concrete industry leads to a higher demand for cement consumption worldwide. Due to this, theproduction of cement has become very crucial, resulting in a high carbon footprint and pollution along the process. Therefore, the utilization of agricultural by-products as cement replacement will help to reduce pollution caused by conventional cementproduction and therefore reduce the unsystematic waste management. Rice husk ash contains high silica content that makesit a potential material to partially replace cement in concrete production. This is because, the reaction between rice husk ashand cement can improve the compressive strength of the concrete. With the aid of response surface methodology, theoptimization of utilizing rice husk ash as a partial replacement of cement in concrete can be achieved. Therefore, concreteincorporated with rice husk ash with high and optimum compressive strength can be produced.
