        Multi-point response spectrum analysis of a historical bridge to blast ground motion

        In this study, the effects of ground shocks due to explosive loads on the dynamic response of historical masonry bridges are investigated by using the multi-point shock response spectrum method. With this purpose, different charge weights and distances from the charge center are considered for the analyses of a masonry bridge and depending on these parameters frequency-varying shock spectra are determined and applied to each support of the two-span masonry bridge. The net blast induced ground motion consists of air-induced and direct-induced ground motions. Acceleration time histories of blast induced ground motions are obtained depending on a deterministic shape function and a stationary process. Shock response spectrums determined from the ground shock time histories are simulated using BlastGM software. The results obtained from uniform and multi-point response spectrum analyses cases show that significant differences take place between the uniform and multi-point blast-induced ground motions.

      • Direct measurements of colloidal hydrodynamics near flat boundaries using oscillating optical tweezers

        We studied the hydrodynamic interaction between a colloidal particle close to flat rigid boundaries and the surrounding fluid using oscillating optical tweezers. A colloidal particle located near walls provides a model system to study the behavior of more complex systems whose boundaries can be modeled as effective walls, such as a blood tube, cell membrane, and capillary tube in bio-MEMS. In this study, we measure the hydrodynamic interaction directly without using the Stokes-Einstein relation. Two different cases are studied: a colloidal sphere near a single flat wall and a colloidal sphere located at the midplane between two flat walls. The colloidal hydrodynamics is measured as a function of the distance between the particle and the walls, and is compared with the theoretical results from well-defined hydrodynamics approximations.

        Molybdenum disilicide films had been prepared onto n-Si(100) substrates with e-beam deposition and sequently post-annealing by RTA in the ambient of N_2 or in vacuum. The chemical compositions and morphologies of films were analyzed by XRD, AES(ADP), TEM and NOM(Normaski Optical Microscope). We confirmed that the stable and final phase of Mo/Si system is tetragonal MoSi_2, phase, the surface morphologies and grain sizes had been were depended by the annealing temperatures.       • 물리 문제 해결에 관한 최근 연구의 분석

        In this paper, current research papers on Physics Problem Solving were analyzed according to the types of research purpose, method, subject and content of Physics, by using 3 Proceedings and 4 kinds of Journal, that is, the International Workshop(1983, Paris, France) and Conference (1983, Utrecht, The Netherlands) and Seminar(1987, Cornell University, U. S. A.) on Physics Education, and Journal of Research in Science Teaching (1984-1990) and Science Education (1986-1990). and Inter national Journal of Science Education(1987-1988) and Cognitive Science(1989-1990). There were 98 research papers on Problem Solving and among them 37 papers on Physics Problem Solving were selected for analyzing. The results of analysis are as follows; 1) The studies on Model of Novice Student were 22(59%), And those on Model of Desired Preformance, on Model of learning and on Model of Teaching were all much the same. 2) The theoretical studies were 10(27%), and the experimental ones 27(73%). Among the experimental studies, there were 16(59%) by using the written test, and 7(26%) by using the thinking aloud method. 3) The studies about university students as subjects were 20(54%). Probably, it seems the reason that most of reseachers on Physics Problem Solving were professors of university or graduate students. 4) Among the various fields of Physics, the studies on Mechanics were 24(63%) and those on Electromagnetics 6(16%). or graduate students.

        Three main areas of research on problem solving in physics can be classified in this investigation. One area is detailed research on how individuals solve physics problems. The second area comprises studies of pedagogical methods for improving students problem-solving abilities. Research in these areas examines how subjects deal with standard physics problems, that is, the numerical tasks typically found at the ends of the chapters in introductory physics textbooks. The third area consists of investigations into other types of problems, questions of transfer, what students learn from solving problems, and other issues. This investigation closes with a general discussion of problem solving and instructional issues.

      • Hydrazine 合成에 있어서 Ca(OH)_2의 作用에 關해서

        It is important to study hydrazine because of the development of new uses for its derivatives. Work on the synthesis of hydrazine, starting substance of the various derivatives, has been performed before, with the materials produced in Korea by applying the Rasching method. The Rasching mothed is the only satisfactory one for synthesizing hydrazine; it involves the oxidation of ammonia by sodium hypochlorite in the presence of some such catalyst as gelatin. Calcium hypochlorite was substituted for the sodium hypochlorite partcularly in this work, applying agar-agar as catalyst. As a result an increase in the yield of hydrazine was obtained. Recently I have worked quantitatively on the fact that calcium hypochlorite gives more favorable result than sodium hypochlorite. The results of the experiments are as follow; 1. When calcium byphchlorite is applied in place of sodium hypochlorite, the yield of hydrazine is increased as much as 17%. 2. The yield of hydrazine is decreased by eliminating the suspension of Ca(OH)_2 which results from the use of calcuim hypochlorite. 3. When Ca(OH)_2 is added to Rasching process, the yield of hydrazine is raised normally. 4. The fact that some metal ions, such as Cu^++, inhibit the formation of hydrazine was proves. 5. The suspension of Ca(OH)_2 acted as a remarkable absorbent for Cu^++ gelatin. The suspension of Ca(OH)_2 which results from the use of calcium hyphchlorite acts as a catalyst, absorbing metal ions, to increase the yield of hydrazine. So I think that calcium hypochlorite is a more efficient oxidant than sodium hypochlorite in hydrazine synthesis.

        DIFFERENTIABILITY OF NEUTRAL STOCHASTIC DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS DRIVEN BY G-BROWNIAN MOTION WITH RESPECT TO THE INITIAL DATA

        This paper deals with differentiability of solutions of neutral stochastic differential equations with respect to the initial data in the G-framework. Since the initial data belongs to the space BC ([-r, 0] ;R<sup>n</sup>) of bounded continuous R<sup>n</sup>-valued functions defined on [-r, 0] (r > 0), the derivative belongs to the Banach space L<sub>BC</sub> (R<sup>n</sup>) of linear bounded operators from BC ([-r, 0] ;R<sup>n</sup>) to R<sup>n</sup>. We give the neutral stochastic differential equation of the derivative. In addition, we exhibit two examples confirming the accuracy of the obtained results.

        Lupus nephritis presenting with massive ascites and pleural effusion (pseudo-pseudo Meigs’ syndrome)

        The triad of ascites, pleural effusion, and elevated cancer antigen-125 (CA-125) levels in the absence of ovarian malignancy in systemic lupus erythematosus patients is specifically named pseudo-pseudo Meigs’ syndrome (PPMS) or Tjalma syndrome. In this case we reported a 33 years female patient with pleural effusion lasting for 3 years and new onset progressive massive ascites and increased level of CA-125. After she was evaluated for an underlying benign and malign ovarian tumor or any other malignancies, serologic tests were requested with respect to progressive renal dysfunction, proteinuria, lymphopenia, anemia, and effusion. She was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythamatosus (SLE) and renal biopsy showed class-V lupus nephritis. Immunosuppressive treatment led to improvement in both SLE activity and components of PPMS, including massive ascites and pleural effusion and without the need of diuretics. Co-existence of unexplained CA-125 increase, pleural effusion, and ascites might be related to PPMS and detailed examination to exclude malignancy and early and effective treatment of SLE are the mainstay of management.
