INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES ON FIRE RESEARCH

In this paper presented are recent international activities on fire research. After a long history of exchanging ideas in individual international groups, the International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS) was founded in 1985 at its first Symposium, and in 1988, it became a registered charity in England and Wales. The primary objectives of the association are encouraging research in the science of preventing and mitigating the adverse effects of fires and of providing a forum for presenting the results such research. In order to implement the objectives, the Association has held a series of Symposia. At the same time, regional activities have been performed to expand the activities of IAFSS into every individual country. The Asia-Oceania Association for Fire Science and Technology (AOAFST) was founded in 1992 at its first Symposium and the First European Regional IAFSS Symposium was held in Zurich in 1995. Extensive activities in fire research have been performed in Asian and Oceanian countries.

Highly Precise Geometric Correction of GMS Infrared Images

In this paper, precise geometric correction of GMS-IR1, which can be received all data about the earth night and day, is proposed. First, at the acquisition of residual errors that is used in the calculation of correct expression, the residual error acquisition processing contained a preparation of highly precise binary images using multi-thresholding and reliability evaluation of residual errors are proposed. As a result of residual error acquisition by the proposed method, in contrast to nighttime data, it's hard to acquire the residual errors in the daytime data. Moreover, between the residual errors of GMS-VIS and GMS-IRl, tendency of the discrepancy that is not theoretical was discovered. So, after checking that discrepancy has caused at every point of GMS images and taking it into consideration, we propose the geometric correction method that residual errors acquired in both images are compensated mutually.

Bridging Grammar and Communication: Focusing on the Preposition Of

Focusing on the preposition of, this paper proposes a new method of grammar instruction to strengthen students’ understanding of grammar rules, as well as their communication abilities. It is important for scholars and teachers to find a way to improve grammar teaching methods because they have not changed for several decades, while methodologies for improving students’ communication skills have been discussed widely. Even ESL teachers who predominantly employ communication-centered teaching techniques rely on mechanistic methods to teach grammar, requiring students to memorize grammatical rules. The new grammar instruction method consists of two processes: understanding the essence of a particular rule and applying the understanding to a film dialog to see how grammatical rules are employed correctly in communicative settings. Understanding the essence of grammatical rules enables students to improve their communication skills and abilities; it also does not require them to memorize grammatical rules. Furthermore, film dialogs enable learners to understand the importance of context and setting in the process of communication. To demonstrate how this new method works, the paper explains the essential meaning of of as a part of a larger whole, and shows how the essential meaning is employed in film dialog.

Issues in Euthanasia Jurisprudence in Japan

In Japan, euthanasia is defined as an act to ease the pain of patients and let them die peacefully in the final stage of a terminal illness, in a situation of serious physical suffering with no prospect of recovery, and we have had several jurisprudence cases concerning acts called “euthanasia”, none of which ended with the defendant judged not guilty, although the courts mentioned the conditions required for a lawful act. After describing the jurisprudence and extracting the common background of these cases, we discuss euthanasia as it affects and is related to the practice of medicine, doctor-patient relationship, circumstances around doctors and lack of patient’s will.

A Constraint-Based Approach to Korean Loanwords

This paper presents an analysis of Korean loanwords within the framework of Optimality Theory. It argues that the constraints FAITHFULNESS and MARGIN-R, which condition the preservation of original input forms, play a crucial role in loanword phonology, and that they interest with other costraints describing the unmarked characteristics of the basic syllable structure. It also argues that a system of both dominant constraints and ranked, vioable constraints selects forms. This research strongly suggests that a ranking of constraints, BR, M-R ≫ FIATHFULNESS ≫ PARSE ≫ ALIGN-R ≫ FILL ≫ ONS ≫ -COD exists in Korean loanword phonology. Moreover, it is demonstrated that two possible actual forms are characterized by the ranking differences between violable constraints, and that overparsing is a relialbe strategy for rescuing unsyllabifiable segments. This analysis shows how Optimality Theory works in loanword phonology.

LCC利用客の增加に伴う沖繩縣觀光客受入體制の整備について

航空自由化により日本にも本格的なLCCが登場し、従来航空機を利用することのなかった顧客層の新たな需要を創出している。沖縄県においてもLCC旅客数及び旅客数シェアは年々増加し、平成25(2013)年度のLCC旅客数は55万人、LCC旅客数シェアは入域観光客数の8.4%に達したと推計される。国内LCCによる那覇空港拠点化や海外LCCの新規乗り入れにより、今後も益々LCC旅客数及び旅客数シェアが高まり、平成33(2021)年には沖縄入域観光客の約4分の1にあたる250万人にまで伸長することも予測される。行動バターンが従来と異なるLCC旅客の増加は、沖縄観光に大きな変革をもたらす可能性がある。こうしたLCCがもたらす変化に対応するため、新しい着地型のビジネスプランの構築、長期滞在型施設の充実、二次交通の改善といった課題に取り組むことが必要である。 Accompanying the appearance of professional LCCs in Japan as a part of aviation liberalization, new demands have been created by customer segments that conventionally did not travel by air. The number of LCC passengers and the share of LCC passengers grow larger year by year also in Okinawa, and it is estimated that the number of LCC passengers of 2013 has reached 550,000 while the share of LCC passengers has reached 8.4% of visitors to Okinawa. It is expected that the number of LCC passengers and the share of LCC passengers continue growing being boosted by domestic LCCs increasing using Naha Airport as a hub and by new entry of overseas LCCs and that the number increases to 2,500,000 which corresponds to approximate one fourth of all travelers to Okinawa by 2021. The increase of LCC passengers whose behavior patterns differ from conventional ones might possibly cause large changes in tourism in Okinawa. To cope with such changes caused by the growth of LCCs, it is necessary to work on tasks such as establishment of new business plans of landing type, provision of facilities of long-stay type and improvements in intermodal passenger transportation.

Increase in Plasma HDL-Cholesterol Concentration in Goats Fed Sesame Meal Is Related to Ether Extract Fraction Included in the Meal

Previously, we reported that a diet including sesame meal (SM) increased plasma total and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol concentrations in goats. In the present study, the components in the sesame meal that can increase plasma total and HDL-cholesterol concentrations have been examined. In experiment 1, we gave goats defatted sesame meal diet (DSM) to investigate the influence of ether extract fraction remained in sesame meal. Corn gluten meal diet (CGM) was also fed to goats as a high-protein diet to examine the influence of high dietary protein level caused by usage of sesame meal. Plasma total and HDL-cholesterol concentrations of goats fed DSM and CGM did not change during experimental periods though they were elevated by feeding SM. In experiment 2, the influence of sesame oil and corn oil added in diets on plasma total and HDL-cholesterol concentrations in goats was investigated. Plasma total and HDL-cholesterol concentrations were increased by feeding both corn oil diet and sesame oil diet. In conclusion, the increase in plasma HDL-cholesterol concentration by feeding sesame meal was resulted by the effect of ether extract fraction including sesame oil or some lipid-soluble components remained in sesame meal.

IMAGING THE CIRCUMSTELLAR ENVELOPES AROUND EVOLVED STARS WITH THE SMA

We present the high-resolution (2"-4") images of the molecular envelopes surrounding the evolved stars, V Hya, VY CMa, and ${\pi}^1$ Gru observed with the Submillimeter Array. The CO J=2-1 and 3-2 images of the carbon star V Hya show that the circumstellar structure of this star consists of three kinematic components; there is a flattened disk-like envelope that is expanding with a velocity of ${\~}16 km\;s^{-1}$, the second component is the medium-velocity wind having a deprojected velocity of 40-120 km $s^{-l}$ moving along the disk plane, and the third one is the bipolar molecular jet having an extreme velocity of 70-185 km $s^{-l}$. The axis of this high velocity jet is perpendicular to the plane of the disk-like envelope. We found that the circumstellar structure of the S-star ${\pi}^1$ Gru traced by the CO J =2-1 resembles that of V Hya quite closely; the star is surrounded by the expanding disk-like envelope and is driving the medium-velocity wind along the disk plane. We also obtained the excellent images of VY CMa with the CO and $^{13}CO$ J=2-1 and $SO\;6_5-5_4$ lines. The maps of three molecular lines show that the envelope has a significant velocity gradient in the east-west direction, suggesting that the envelope surrounding VY CMa is also flattened and expanding along its radial direction. The high-resolution images obtained with the SMA show that some AGB stars are associated with the asymmetric mass loss including the equatorial wind and bipolar jet.
