      • 80年代 韓國의 知性史的 考察-그 試論

        This treatise was written of the spiritual situation of 1980's in Korea fem the point of intellectual history. Of course, the methods can be applied to it in various ways. But the spirit of the time is clearly disclosed, I think, when it is searched on the whole. Here were excluded from the important fields of intellectual history - drama, music, the fine arts, philosophy, popular culture, social and economic conditions and so on. Because in the treatise of this form, the various fields can not included in it. I analyzed in this treatise two fictions that was considered as the most important novels of 1980's in Korea-Park Keong-lee's The Land and Cho Jeong-rae's The mountains Tae Baek. These image expressed in the novels are pain, anxiety, separation, transiency, war, confronting each other, death, despair, solitude, revolution and so on. It is a conclusion of this treatise that these mages were reflected upon the spiritual situation of 1980's in Korea.

      • 獨逸의 浪漫的 民族主義思想에 對한 一考察

        This study on the thought of romantic nationalism in Germany is drawn up on assumption that the disproportion of the western rationalism and romanticism was not a contingent thing, but a historical event. That assumption made me survey the lineal evolution of the philosophical thought had run into the waves of romanticism. The Thought which was indicated by G. W. F. Hegel, essentially rationalist, developed into a new system of thought that was contrary to the western rationalism. The system of thought ran through a clear distrust to the political self -control of the western citizens, moreover it had a clear effect upon the evolution of the nationalism in Germany. One important character to the idea of romantic nationalism in Germany was an aristocraticism, and another the rationalization of state power. The aristocraticism was clearly expressed by F. Schlegel, E.M. Arndt, and R. Wagner, and rationalization of state-power was described by H. Treitschke and C. Schmitt. This characters, of course, could not be considered as the phenomenon which was proper to Germany. But it certainly seems to me that the belief on the self-control of human being was disregarded, that the instinctive impulse and sentiment which were in .human nature were extremely stressed, in the idea o fnationalism in Germany.

        The victorian period was an age of transition. By the late nineteenth century it was clear that the fuedal and agrarian order of the past had been replaced by a democratic and industrial society. Though the Victorians never ceased to look forward to a new period of firm convictions and established beliefs, they had to live in the meantime between two world, one dead or dying, one struggling but powerless to be bon, in an age of doubt. T. Caryle grappled vigorously with the work of the philosophers, Kant, Fichite, Schelling and Schlegel, for he recognised that the Enlightenment was principally a philosophical phenomenon, and must be met with its own weapons on its own ground. He was steeped in German philosophy, but he had acquired his transcendentalism under the auspices of the romantic age, and two of his genera-tion's keenest intellects, Newman and Mill, knew little of contemporary German idealistic thought. He, in Past and Present, alluded to disease enveloping the whole of soeity ; "fever-fits", "chronic gangrene", "social malady", the plague. Most moral diagnosticians agreed that it was fatty degeneration of the soul which had out English society on what they were convinced was to prove its deathbed unless stringent remedies were applied. To him hero-worship was the oldest and firmest element in man's social and cultural life. He saw in it "an everlasting hope for the management of the world. He identified the whole of historical life with the life of great men. Without them there would be no history. There would be stagnation, and stagnation means death.

        An assumption of the methodology in history of ideas of A. O. Lovejoy is founded in the self-consciousness of human being. And the self-consciousness is primarily depended on the abstract method. A.O. Lovejoy introduced into idea-complexes and unit-ideas as a method of history of ideas. It is not perhaps superfluous to remark also that the doctrines or tendencies that are designated but familiar names ending in ism or ity, though they occasionally may be, usually or not units of the sort which the historian of ideas seeks to discriminate. Another type of factors in the history of ideas may be described as susceptibilities to diverse kinds of metaphysical pathos, while the history of ideas is thus an attempt at historical synthesis, this does not mean it is a mere conglomerate, still less that it aspires to be a comprehensive unification, of other historical disciplines. The history of ideas is therefore no subject for highly departmentalized minds. It presupposes also an interest in the workings of human thought in the past even when these are, or seem to many of our generation to be, misguided, confused, or even absurd .

        Slave law refused to recognize slave marriages and family ties. In this respect United States slavery was far worse than Spanish American or Luso-Brazilian. As a result, generations of American historians have concluded that American slaves had no family life and that Cuban and Brazilian slaves did. The rise of the Cotton Kingdom and the great period of slavery expansion followed the closing of the slave trade. The result was a self-reproducing slave force in the United States and nowhere else, so far as the statistics reveal. In precisely this way, slaves took up the masters' interest in their family life and turned it to account. The typical plantation in the South was organized by family unit. Man and wife lived together with children, and within a considerable sphere the man was in fact the man in the house.

        As Japanese militarism intensified in the decade of the 1930's a mood of deepening crisis swept over the Korean people. In this milieu writers in Korea shifted course once again, toward ·a "pure" literature that deliberately avoided confronting the threatening realities of that time. In his work, "Tak Lyeu" (a muddy stream), Chae Man Shik had distinctly described Korean's suffering in Japanese colonial reign. The important styles of characters in the work were the manmonists who had made money and the lower class who had come down in colonial reign. The characters of Yu Gin Oho' works were the wandering intellectuals in the period. The ends of stories in his works were the hopeless wandering of Korean people and the return to their native place.

        In the first half and later of the 19th century in when Hwa Sheo and Meon Am had played an active part, a crisis consciousness was risen in the impact of foreign power and the financial exhaustion in Korea. The intrusion of Korea by western warships were an impulse event which had dramatically indicated the situation in the 19th century, and Dong Hak movement was also an event which had inicated it in later of the 19th century. The fundamental spirit in their thought was obviously reflected in the idea of Seong Lee Hak. In the evolution of nationalism the common people took charge of the decisive role. Intrinsic aspirations for social change were evolved into an ideological shape in the mid-19th century. In the end of 19th century when began to be broken down obsolete orders under the flag of moderniza-tion and was turning out true the occupation of Korea by Japan, the idea of nationalism in Korea was systematized in the enlightened thought which reflected the social change of those days.
