This study was aimed to investigate the possibility of using raw and anaerobically-digested piggery wastewater as culture media for a green microalga Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris). Due to high concentration of ammonia and dark color, the microalga did not grow well in this wastewater. In order to solve this problem, air stripping and NaOCl-treatment were applied to reduce the concentration of NH₃-N and the color intensity from the wastewater. Algal growth was monitored in terms of specific growth rate, biomass productivity, and nutrient removal efficiency. As a result, C. vulgaris grew without any sign of inhibition in air-stripped and 10-folds diluted anaerobically-digested piggery wastewater with enhanced biomass productivity of 0.57 g/L·d and nutrient removal of 98.7-99.8% for NH3-N and 41.0-62.5% for total phosphorus. However, NaOCl-treatment showed no significant effect on growth of C. vulgaris, although dark color was removed greatly. Interestingly, despite that the soluble organic concentration after air stripping was still high, the biomass productivity was 4.4 times higher than BG-11. Moreover, air stripping was identically effective for raw piggery wastewater as for anaerobic digestate. Therefore, it was concluded that air stripping was a very effective method for culturing microalgae and removing nutrients from raw and anaerobically-digested piggery wastewaters.

The soluble sugar content of legume seeds affects the final flavor of the legume and legume products. The purpose of this study was to develop a rapid, simple, and low-cost colorimetric method for high-throughput screening of sucrose content in legume seeds. This colorimetric method was based on the enzymatic reactions of invertase (INV) and glucose oxidase (GOD). Briefly, 20 different soybean and cowpea varieties were used in this study. For sucrose extraction, solvent-to-sample ratios of 10:1 and 5:1 were found to result in optimal absorbance values for determining sucrose content in soybean and cowpea, respectively. The extraction efficiency was also evaluated under various extraction temperatures (25℃ and 50℃) and incubation times (15 minutes, 2 hours, 8 hours, and 24 hours) and the sucrose content was found to increase with increasing temperature and time. Accordingly, the optimal extraction conditions were 24 hours of incubation at 50℃. Under this condition, the GOD/INV method had significant positive correlations (r = 0.91** for soybean and r = 0.87** for cowpea) with the high-performance liquid chromatography method. Overall, this colorimetric method is a fast, simple, and inexpensive tool for quantitative determination of sucrose content in legumes.
Hyperarousal-state of Insomnia Disorder in Wake-resting State Quantitative Electroencephalography

Objective: Insomnia is associated with elevated high-frequency electroencephalogram power in the waking state. Although affective symptoms (e.g., depression and anxiety) are commonly comorbid with insomnia, few reports distinguished objective sleep disturbance from affective symptoms. In this study, we investigated whether daytime electroencephalographic activity explains insomnia, even after controlling for the effects of affective symptoms. Methods: A total of 107 participants were divided into the insomnia disorder (n = 58) and healthy control (n = 49) groups using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview and diagnostic criteria for insomnia disorder. The participants underwent daytime resting-state electroencephalography sessions (64 channels, eye-closed). Results: The insomnia group showed higher levels of anxiety, depression, and insomnia than the healthy group, as well as increased beta [t (105) = −2.56, p = 0.012] and gamma [t (105) = −2.44, p = 0.016] spectra. Among all participants, insomnia symptoms positively correlated with the intensity of beta (r = 0.28, p < 0.01) and gamma (r = 0.25, p < 0.05) spectra. Through hierarchical multiple regression, the beta power showed the additional ability to predict insomnia symptoms beyond the effect of anxiety (ΔR2 = 0.041, p = 0.018). Conclusion: Our results showed a significant relationship between beta electroencephalographic activity and insomnia symptoms, after adjusting for other clinical correlates, and serve as further evidence for the hyperarousal theory of insomnia. Moreover, resting-state quantitative electroencephalography may be a supplementary tool to assess insomnia.
3D Amorphous Silicon on Nanopillar Copper Electrodes as Anodes for High-Rate Lithium-Ion Batteries

We present an amorphous Si anode deposited on a Cu nanopillar current collector, fabricated using a thermal roll-to-roll process followed by electroformation and LPCVD, for application in high-rate Li-ion batteries. Cu nanopillar current collectors with diameters of 250 and 500 nm were patterned periodically with 1 μm pitch and 2 μm height to optimize the diameters of the pillars for better electrochemical performance. Void spaces between Cu nanopillars allowed not only greater effective control of the strain caused by the Si expansion during lithiation than that allowed by a nonpatterned electrode but also significantly improved cycle performance even at 20 C measured after the same rate test: After 100 cycles at 0.5 C, the patterned electrodes with 250 and 500 nm diameter nanopillars showed high capacity retentions of 86% and 84%, respectively. These electrodes retained discharge capacities of 1057 and 780 mAh/g even at 20 C, respectively.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info
