More than two-thirds of publicly traded firms in Korea had experienced downsizing (employee adjustment) during the 1997 IMF economic crisis. The reason companies implement downsizing is mainly because they believe that it would lead to improvement of productivity and competitive power. Despite such belief, however, empirical studies on western firms have shown mixed results so far. The research question of this study is straightforward: Does downsizing have an effect on firm's financial performance? Based upon both survey data and the longitudinal financial data of 224 Korean publicly traded firms, we investigated the effect of downsizing firm's financial performance in terms of productivity, growth, and profitability. As results, first, firms adopting downsizing between 1997 and 1998 tended to suffer more financial difficulties than their counterparts. Second, downsizing adjustment clearly showed the short-term positive effect on firms' improvement of productivity and financial performance. Third, multiple regression results showed on average 3.5% sales increase, 0.7% profit increase, and 1.2% productivity (value added) increase during 3 year period after downsizing. Finally the paper concluded implication of interaction effects between downsizing and firm's past performance. IMF 경제위기 이후 한국 노동시장의 유연성에 대한 요구가 증가하고, 1998년 근로기준법에 경영상에 의한 해고조항이 삽입된 이후 한국기업에서도 많은 고용조정이 이루어져왔다. 그러나 고용조정에 대한 기존의 서구문헌들은 고용조정이 재무적인 성과에 미치는 영향에 대해 이렇다할 결론을 내리지 못하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 1998년 상장기업을 대상으로 실시한 고용조정에 관한 실태조사 자료를 이용하여 고용조정이 생산성, 성장성, 수익성이라는 세 가지 관점에서 기업의 재무적 성과 향상에 기여하였는지를 분석하고자 하였다. 224개의 상장기업을 분석한 결과, 첫째, 1997년에서 1998년 사이에 고용조정을 실시한 기업들은 상대적으로 경영성과가 좋지 않은 기업들이었다. 둘째, 고용조정이가져다주는 재무적인 효과는 고용조정 후 2년간 분명하게 나타나고 있었다. 특히 영업이익/총자산 비율의 개선이 두드러지게 나타나고 있으며, 부가가치/총자산으로 측성된 생산성에서도 개선의 효과가 나타나고 있다. 셋째, 다중회귀분석을 통해 분석한 고용조정의 재무적인 성과는 고용조정 후 3년 동안 평균 매출액비율 3.5% 증가의 효과를 가져다주었고, 영업이익율에는 0.7% 증가의 효과를 그리고 부가가치율에는 1.2% 중가의 효과를 가져다주었다. 마지막으로 고용조정과 기업의 경영성과 간에 상호작용 효과에 대한 시사점을 제시하고 있다.
Evidences that β-Lactose Forms Hydrogen Bonds in DMSO

Glycoproteins and glycolipids play key roles in intracellular reactions between cells and their environments at the membrane surface. For better understanding of the nature of these events, it is necessary to know three-dimensional structures of those carbohydrates, involved in them. Since carbohydrates contain many hydroxyl groups which can serve both as hydrogen bond donors and acceptors, hydrogen bond is an important factor stabilizing the structure of carbohydrate. DMSO is an aprotic solvent frequently used for the study of carbohydrates because it gives detailed insight into the intramolecular hydrogen bond network. In this study, conformational properties and the hydrogen bonds in -lactose in DMSO are investigated by NMR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. NOEs, temperature coefficients, deuterium isotope effect, and molecular dynamics simulations proved that there is a strong intramolecular hydrogen bond between O3 and HO2' in -lactose and also OH3 in -lactose may form an intermolecular hydrogen bond with DMSO.
Analysis of topological properties in a seismic network

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>In this study, we examine a seismic network by considering the cell resolution and the temporal causality. Seismic activity data from the Korean peninsula are mapped onto a growing network with links between consecutive events. After we especially show a seismic network with spatial heterogeneity and scales in an area, topological properties of this seismic activity network are measured and found. Our result for the robustness of these properties can be compared with other calculated findings.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P><P>► We study a seismic network by considering the cell resolution and the temporal causality. ► A computer simulation of the seismic network is performed using seismic time series data. ► We mainly estimate the global network metrics from seismic data of the Korean peninsula.</P>
