Self-Theologizing of the Three-Fold Blessing Which Occurred in the Ministry of Youngsan

( Gwi Sam Cho ) 한세대학교 영산신학연구소 2014 영산신학저널 Vol.31 No.-

The writer would like to study the missiological meaning of the result of self-theologizing which made the church grow as Youngsan made the Three-fold Blessing via making a blessing which is inherent in Korean tradition and known as “redemptive analogy.” The Three-fold Blessing theology of Youngsan applied well to Korean Christians as Youngsan applied blessings in the Bible to the Korean tradition and made it rooted and fruitful. His key message of the Three-fold Blessing is well summarized in 3 John 1:2, “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” If it is evaluated by Korean theology, the theology of blessing is contextualized in the Korean culture. Youngsan made the largest church in the world through the Threefold Blessing. This can be a successful model of self-theologizing in Korea. When the Gospel came to Korea and survived by itself, Koreans received Biblical truth on “blessings” from a position of a receiver. Youngsan developed this notion of “blessing” in the process of Christian indigenization and made the church growth greatly. His theology teaches that good God is God of blessing. Indeed, he taught church members that God of Christianity is good God, and made Korean self-theologizing through the missiological application of the Three-fold Blessing. After all, Youngsan made the largest church through the gospel of the Three-fold Blessing, which applied the notion of blessings which Koreans have traditionally. He has practiced serving others as a holistic mission of holistic salvation through church growth and changes the culture of “han” inherent in Koreans and expands to the churches in the world though CGI and centripetal visiting conferences. Thus, the writer argues that Youngsan is a minister who fulfilled self-theologizing in Korea, using the gospel of the Three-fold Blessing which is in the Bible.

Missions Training in Christian Education System of Korea

Gwi-sam Cho 한국기독교교육정보학회 2006 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.10

Who should we model our Christian Education method after? It should be Jesus and Paul. Jesus spent many hours teaching and training His disciples for successful mission. Paul, who was on the forefront in preaching to Gentiles, was a well-trained missionary. He was trained by the most prestigious rabbi Gamaliel. What he learned became the basis of 'Justification by Faith'-the essence of Christianity. Korean churches should draw lessons from this. I have participated in many seminars and symposiums on mission strategy. Questions about the remarkable growth of Korean churches as well as questions concerning the training of our missionaries have frequently been asked. This motivated me to start this paper. This paper critically reviews the current Christian Education system of missionaries in Korea and seeks to figure out how missionary training can lead to effective missions.

Missiological Education to Overcome the Conflict of Civilization

Gwi Sam Cho 한국기독교교육정보학회 2011 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.20

This study focuses on missiological education to overcome the conflict of civilizations for multi-cultural immigrant women who are married to Koreans. Since the population of marriage immigrants has grown, a multicultural society has been formed by international marriages. At the same time, this trend has brought several conflicts not only between two cultures but also between marriage immigrants. Here, the writer first analyses three motives of their settlement in Korea. The first motive is the Korean government’s marriage movement for unmarried people. The second motive is religious marriage that unites religion. The third motive is marriage into Korean culture and financial reasons. Next, the writer examines the essential elements of family problems occurring in immigrant brides’ families: violation of human rights, emotional conflicts of cross culture, conflicts in family members and conflicts of financial insufficiency. The Korean government enforces various education laws for immigrant brides so that they can adapt themselves well in Korea. The representative offices are the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Women, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Due to this endeavor, Korean society understands that we need to break the wall of dual cultures and untie society. Yet, a temporary and onetime event cannot solve the fundamental problems of immigrant women in Korea. We need to apply synthetic education for them. Within synthetic education, the essential element is mission education. The writer puts special emphasis on missiological education for multi-cultural families. Religious education by the church community, resolution of cultural conflicts through a multicultural Christian academy, an increase in the quality of life by Biblical spouse education, and church education for multi-cultural children are suggested.

The Study on the Influence of the Fasting Prayer Movement of Rev. Ja Shil Choi in the Church Growth of Yoido Full Gospel Church

( Gwi Sam Cho ) 한세대학교 영산신학연구소 2012 영산신학저널 Vol.25 No.-

The Yoido Full Gospel Church (YFGC) is the biggest church in the world. The beginning of the church was the result of the fasting prayer of Rev. Ja Shil Choi. It is certain that due to her fasting prayer, the biggest church was established. Fasting prayer is a unique and useful tool which gives positive influence on faithful life and health. Further, it brings the power of God into our life. Rev. Choi argues that fasting prayer is a useful religious practice through her own experience. Today, we live in the era where we need faith. When we subdue the body through fasting prayer and have deep fellowship with the Holy Spirit, our spirit is filled with the Holy Spirit. Thus, we can do not belong to body, but to the Holy Spirit so that we can be a spirit-filled man and have a victorious life. Through this study, the writer wants to delineate how the Fasting Prayer Movement of Rev. Choi influenced the church growth of Yoido Full Gospel Church. Rev. Ja Shil Choi realized the necessity of fasting prayer mountain for spiritual life, and prayed for the building of prayer mountain. Initially, she tried to establish at Shiheung and made a contract to purchase 10,000 sq.m.; but she was swindled. When she prayed in despair, she heard the voice, “Go to the graveyard at Ohsanri.” Initially, she prayed in a storage house which manages a cemetery and more people gathered in the storage house and built the prayer mountain with the approval of church council of Yoido Full Gospel Church. Prayer is the highest priority task in church growth. The writer proves six essential aspects. The church began at the outskirt of Ja Shil Choi and has become the biggest church in the world. In this growth, the writer proves that Fasting Prayer played an important role in the growth of YFGC. Rev. Choi emphasized not only fasting prayer but also practicing the Christian life. The power of fasting prayer is to restore family, to give spiritual power, and to bring divine healing. As a result, she taught us that fasting prayer brings church growth. We, Christians, should apply the spirituality of fasting prayer to our religious life to bring church growth.

다문화아동의 학업적응을 위한 선교 케어 연구

조귀삼 ( Gwi Sam Cho ) 한국복음주의선교신학회 2013 복음과 선교 Vol.22 No.-

Korean society is on its way to the multicultural society. According to the latest national statistics, the number of multicultural residents in South Korea has reached about 1.5 billion. This is mainly due to the influx of employs by Korea`s changing global status and industrialization. Particularly, rapid increase of marriage immigrants represents the fact that Korea is no longer a homogeneous culture. Multicultural immigrant woman who are married to Korean brings several social concerns, and among them are children`s educational adjustment problem which is the most notable issue. Now, multicultural children`s low level of academic achievement due to their adjustment difficulties has become a national project. At the same time, churches are charged with the mission of evangelizing them to be a member of Kingdom of God and achieve social integration. Children from multicultural family suffers from several problems in academic adjustment due to their low economic status and decreasing desire for learning. By this, they present low level of basic learning, and their difficulties in cultural adjustment caused by language barrier drives them out from their peer group. By this way, these children feel confused in their identity and feel isolated by experiencing social bias which may, in turn, give them distorted view about Korean society. To solve the problems that multicultural societies experience, western countries such as America, Germany, France, and England strive to search various theories on multicultural education, and apply them to the policy. Much to our delight, Korean government had started establishing numerous supporting policies under the goal of social integration. However, care on mental factors which can transform man`s life is crucial for these policies to bring successful results. Researchers have call on churches for this part. The church`s roles I suggest are first, educating Korean language to preschoolers through education in church, second, promote learning through opening afterschool education in church, third, teaching Bible for recovery of selfesteem, and finally mentoring through active utilization of multicultural counsellor. I hope this paper could give an opportunity among Korean churches and church member to firmly recognize coming of multicultural society, and to evangelize multicultural children in the context of social integration and expanding Kingdom of God.

        다문화 청소년을 위한 복지선교 연구

조귀삼 ( Gwi Sam Cho ) 한국복음주의선교신학회 2014 복음과 선교 Vol. No.

In the process of globalization, at present the number of immigrants who enter Korea rapidly increases. Since the establishment of nation by the Korean Government, Korea has been a country which transfers the laborers into the construction of Middle East countries and students to study-abroad program all over the world until the early 1990 years. However the country turns into an organizational structure where imports human resources with the success of completing industrialization. Such this phenomenon is simply not only limited to be in the third dimensional industry but also both in the interracial marriage and the trend of increasing the number of bolters from North Korea. In Korea, the population of multicultural residents is recently 1.45 million. Additionally the number of multicultural families has been steadily increased up to three hundred fifty thousand. They have given birth to babies with Korean citizenship as well. As researching about the trend of the multicultural youths who reside in Korea, the immigration from foreign countries, the second marriage of a single parent, the breakaway from North Korea and illegal residence contribute to create such a many multicultural youths in Korea. The multicultural youths have several troubles adapting to the Korean Society. Firstly, it is deficiency of self-esteem caused by their parents’ lacking education. The multicultural children’s parents who support them suffer from economic deficiency, low social status and society’s bias toward the multicultural family. The fact absolutely causes them losing academic capability to accommodate themselves to Korea’s school system. Secondly, it is the loss of opportunity to be affiliated intermediately to the public education system for the youth who just emigrated from foreign countries to Korea. In the end of 2008, the officially submitted report presented that the number of youth from foreign countries was estimated approximately ten thousand. But in fact the actual number of the youth was unofficially thirty thousand at that time. For the worst case those who are not registered in government have been still denied to attend public school in Korea. Thirdly, it is the socially psychological stress caused from a cultural shock. While multicultural women reside in Korea, they have been shocked from the difference between their own background and cultural environment. For they recognize the boundary between the major Korean group and the minor foreign group, they suffer from emotional conflict and severe depression. Such the conflict and psychological disorder have been transferred to their children naturally so that the multicultural youths consequently suffer from the same severe depression as their parents have. Fourthly, it is the deviant behavior caused from family violence. The issue related to multicultural families’ violence increases. As researching the statistic report “Comparing to the 2007 report the case of sexual and severe violence happened in the multicultural family was increased up to four times of it in the end of 2010. The violence in the multicultural family naturally has been leading the case of teenage runaway. As looking into the traits of the teenage runaway, those are low self-esteem, deficiency of confidence, sense of inferiority, sarcastic attitude, negative self-image, embarrassing attitude, frustration, and hardships to build the rust in relationship. By the factors described above, the multicultural youths have obtained the critical attitude toward reality. If emphasizing the older generation’s system and traditional custom to the youths, they definitely fall out to their own world in which they establish. Additionally the multicultural youths are sexually open-minded so that they just not only turn down the standard of ethics but also live the pleasure seeking life. In the case letting them to be such there should be socially severe problems. The social conflict of western multicultural countries such as Germany, France and England proves it as well. As a matter of fact the government attempts to remove the fundamental basis of the problems and resolve them through initiating various programs and integrated social welfare. However the attempt has been evaluated as having the limitation, for those kinds of traditional systematic program without love should limit the consequence. From the social perspective for multicultural youth, also for the future of Korea, from the religious perspective to share the gospel they require the ‘Welfare Propagandism’. According to it I, the author of this article analyzed most of articles related to the multicultural youths in Korea and investigated the cases with the insider’s perspective and various alternative missionary works through the welfare which solves these social problems and contribute to the society. I insist that the one who solves such the social problems is church, furthermore insist more strongly that the welfare designed for the multicultural youth finally realizes missionary works for all human beings. To accomplish this, firstly it requires the missionary works increasing their self -esteem through discipleship. All the youths face the external hazards, overcome the stimulations and oppression caused from internal reaction and sink into the pit of despair. The factor which leads the internal reaction is their self-respect. The urgent issue which must be discussed through the multicultural youth welfare is restoration of their self-esteem. Comparing to the ordinary Korean youth, their self-esteem is low. Their improvement of self-esteem must be accompanied with spiritual work as well. Secondly, the missionary work transferred from Church organization to integrate socially and locally in regional area is necessary. Charles Van Engen insists that the position of Church is interpreted in the relationship with the society not only as the one being or active existence in the world but also just participating in God’s mission to innovate the world. Therefore he mentioned that the Church isolated from the social community never exists and the Church which does not contribute to the community just forgot the Church’s true mission. Thirdly the educational missionary is required to help them attending to the upper academic courses. Their main problem of multicultural families’ education is weak reading, vocabulary, writing skills from the delayed language development. It also causes bullying in the class, psychological conflict and losing an opportunity to learn from private institute so that the alternative schools to complement their education must be established as soon as possible. Fourthly, I insist on the welfare missionary work for all human beings through occupation education. The ‘occupation education’ is an official or unofficial system which helps those in need searching all the occupation individually, choosing the proper occupation fitting into their own personal interest, aptitude and capability and developing professional knowledge, functions, attitude, understanding working habit and judgment of specific occupations. For the example of Yoido Full Gospel Church, one of the ministries, the Elim Occupational Education School educates the poor and weak people so that not only multicultural youths but also bolters from North Korea are educated as professionals through the organization. I, the writer of this article once more anticipate that this multicultural youth welfare realizes the growth of Korean church.
