Guvenc, Inanc,Guvenc, Gulten,Tastan, Sevinc,Akyuz, Aygul Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.8

The aim of this study was to identify breast cancer risk factors and reasons for having mammography of the women who applied for mammography, as well as to determine their level of knowledge about risk factors and level of risk perception, and anxiety concerning breast cancer. This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from June 15, 2010 through September 10, 2010, in a university hospital in Ankara, Turkey. A questionnaire prepared by the researchers was used to collect the data. The mean age of the women was $52.1{\pm}9.98$ years. Sixteen percent of the women had a family history of breast cancer. The majority of participants had mammograms (75.8%) before and had gained knowledge about breast cancer and its screening (73.7%). The leading source of information about breast cancer was physicians (46.2%). Physician recommendations, having breast-related complaints, and family history of breast cancer were important reasons to obtain mammography. The mean knowledge score about risk factors of breast cancer was $4.15{\pm}2.73$ and the mean anxiety score was $1.65{\pm}1.61$. It was found that some socio-demographic and obstetrical characteristics of women, their family history, and risk perceptions about breast cancer affect their knowledge and anxiety scores about breast cancer. In conclusion, the present study identified a number of factors affecting mammography participation for women. The results of this study can be helpful in promoting screening for breast cancer.

Performance Analysis of UWB Systems in the Presence of Timing Jitter

Guvenc, Ismail,Arslan, Huseyin The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2004 Journal of communications and networks Vol.6 No.2

In this paper, performances of different ultra-wideband (UWB) modulation schemes in the presence of timing jitter are evaluated and compared. Static and Rayleigh fading channels are considered. For fading channels, Oat and dispersive channels are assumed. First, bit error rate (BER) performances for each case are derived for a fixed value of timing jitter. Later, a uniform distribution of jitter is assumed to evaluate the performance of the system, and the theoretical results are verified by computer simulations. Finger estimation error is treated as timing jitter and an appropriate model is generated. Furthermore, a worst case distribution that provides an upper bound on the system performance is presented and compared with other distributions. Effects of timing jitter on systems employing different pulse shapes are analyzed to show the dependency of UWB performance on pulse shape. Although our analysis assumes uniform timing jitter, our framework can be used to evaluate the BER performance for any given probability distribution function of the jitter.

      • Breast, Cervical, and Colorectal Cancer Screening Status of a Group of Turkish Women

Gulten, Guvenc,Memnun, Seven,Ayse, Kilic,Aygul, Akyuz,Gulcin, Akcan Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.9

Introduction: The aim of the study was to determine the breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening rates and the influencing factors in a group of Turkish females. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in a School of Nursing. The study sample consisted of 603 females who were the mothers/neighbors or relatives of the nursing students. Data collection forms were developed by the investigators after the relevant literature was screened and were used to collect the data. Results: Of the women aged 30 and over, 32.8% had undergone a pap smear test at least once in their life. Of those aged 50 and over, 48.2% had undergone mammography at least once and FOBT had been performed in 12% of these women in their life. Having heard of the screening tests before, knowing why they are done, and having information on the national cancer screening program were important factors influencing the rates of women having these tests done. Discussion: The results of this study show that the rates of women participating in national cervical, breast, and colorectal cancer screening programs are not at the desired levels. Having heard of the screening tests before, knowing why they are done, and having information on the national cancer screening program were important factors influencing the rates of women having these tests done. It is suggested that written and visual campaigns to promote the service should be used to educate a larger population, thus increasing the participation rates for cancer screening programs.

Alpha basic crystallin expression in canine mammary tumors

        Tolga Guvenc,Mustafa Yavuz Gulbahar,Murat Yarim,Yonca Betil Kabak,Onder Karayigit,Mahmut Sozmen 대한수의학회 2012 JOURNAL OF VETERINARY SCIENCE Vol.13 No.1

The aim of this study was to evaluate prognostic and/or diagnostic factors of canine mammary tumors by immunohistochemically analyzing the expression of alpha basic crystallin (aB-c). For this, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded blocks of 51 naturally-occurring canine mammary tumors (11 benign and 40 malignant) were used. Tissue from eight normal canine mammary glands were served as a control. Immunohistochemically, in the control mammary tissues, a few luminal epithelial cells were aB-c positive but myoepithelial cells were negative. In benign or simple type malignant tumors, aB-c expression was observed in luminal epithelial cells while the myoepithelial basal cells were negative. In benign or complex type malign tumors, positive staining was predominantly found in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells. Immunoreactivity of aB-c was also observed in neoplastic myoepithelial cells. Statistically, the number of cells immunolabeled with aB-c was found to be significantly different among tissues from normal canine mammary glands, benign lesions, and malignant tumors (p < 0.05). aB-c immunoreactivity was higher in malignant tumors than the control mammary tissues (p < 0.001). Data obtained in the current study revealed a strong association between high expression levels af aB-c and primary mammary gland tumors in canines.

        Legendre trajectories of trans-$S$-manifolds

        Saban Guvenc 대한수학회 2022 대한수학회보 Vol.59 No.1

In this paper, we consider Legendre trajectories of trans-$S$-manifolds. We obtain curvature characterizations of these curves and give a classification theorem. We also investigate Legendre curves whose Frenet frame fields are linearly dependent with certain combination of characteristic vector fields of the trans-$S$-manifold.

Box-Behnken design-based biodiesel wastewater treatment using sequentialacid cracking and electrochemical peroxidation process: Focus on COD, oil-greaseand volatile fatty acids removals

        Senem Yazici Guvenc,Aleyna Cebi,Emine Can-Güven,Ahmet Demir,Farshid Ghanbari,Gamze Varank 한국화학공학회 2022 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.39 No.9

The treatability of biodiesel wastewater by the electrochemical peroxidation process following acidificationpretreatment was investigated. Box-Behnken design, one of the experimental designs of response surface methodology, was applied to optimize the process parameters for chemical oxygen demand (COD), oil-grease, and volatile fatty acids(VFAs) removal from biodiesel wastewater. The process parameters, i.e., applied current, H2O2/COD ratio, and reactiontime, were optimized and the total cost of the process was determined. After the acidification process as a pretreatment, the COD, oil-grease, and VFAs removal efficiencies were 25.4%, 68.7%, and 50%, respectively. Optimum conditionsdetermined by the developed model for maximum oil-grease removal (98.2%) were applied: current 1.0 A, H2O2/CODratio 0.4, and reaction time 32.8 minutes. This devised Box-Behnken model predicted removal efficiencies of 45.5%,98.2%, and 49.5% for COD, oil-grease, and VFAs, respectively. The total cost of the process determined by the modeland obtained from the validation experiments was 2.03 €/m3 and 1.97 €/m3, respectively. The results of the study showedthat the applied process was efficient in pollutant removal from acidified biodiesel wastewater and the Box-Behnkendesign can be applied to explain the mechanism of the process and optimize the process parameters.

Pre-coagulated landfill leachate treatment by Electro-oxidation using MMO/Ti, Pt/Ti, and graphite anodes

        Senem Yazici Guvenc,Yesim Daniser,Emine Can-Guven,Gamze Varank,Ahmet Demir 대한환경공학회 2023 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.28 No.1

In this study, sequential coagulation and electro-oxidation (EO) processes were applied to landfill leachate, which is highly contaminated and complex wastewater. Since the pollutant content of the leachate was too high, the coagulation process (poly aluminum chloride (PAC) as a coagulant) was applied as a pre-treatment to reduce the cost of the EO process. The Box-Behnken design of response surface methodology was used. The color number (CN) removal efficiency estimated by the model under optimum operating conditions was 80.1%, while it was 77.6% in the experimental studies performed under optimum conditions to verify the model conformity. Multi-metal oxide doped Ti (MMO/Ti), Pt doped Ti (Pt/Ti), and graphite were used as anode and stainless steel was used as cathode in the EO process. In the EO process in which Pt/Ti anode was used, chemical oxygen demand (COD), UV254, and CN removal efficiencies were 52.8, 68.1, and 85.6%, respectively under the conditions of applied current 1.25 A and the pH 5. The CN value decreased to 4.2 after the coagulation process and it was 0.6 at the effluent of the EO process.

COLLISION AVOIDANCE OF LOW SPEED AUTONOMOUS SHUTTLES WITH PEDESTRIANS

Sukru Yaren Gelbal,Bilin Aksun-Guvenc,Levent Guvenc 한국자동차공학회 2020 International journal of automotive technology Vol.21 No.4

This paper is on a pedestrian collision avoidance system for low speed autonomous shuttles based on Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) communication. When pedestrians cannot be detected using line-of-sight sensors like camera, radar and LIDAR, V2P communication with the Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) enabled pedestrian smartphone is used to detect and localize them through the in-vehicle DSRC radio used for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication. The vehicle, then, either stops or, if possible, goes around the pedestrian in a socially acceptable manner using the elastic band method for locally modifying the vehicle trajectory in real time. The elastic band method of collision avoidance is modified for fast real time execution in this paper. Along with model-in-the-loop simulations, a hardware-in-the-loop simulator using an automated driving vehicle model in the high fidelity vehicle dynamics simulation program Carsim Real Time with Sensors and Traffic with two DSRC modems emulating the vehicle and pedestrian communications is introduced and used in this paper as a prerequisite to real world experiments. Both stationary and moving pedestrians are considered in the model and hardware-in-the-loop simulations. Two real world experiments are also presented to demonstrate the V2P based avoidance of crashes between low speed autonomous shuttles and pedestrians.
