Exception to the rule: the Obama administration and China-U.S. relations

The election of an opposition party candidate into the White House usually leads to friction between China and the United States. This paper argues that Barack Obama's election will serve as an exception. Instead of taking a harsher line on China, President Obama would inherit many of Bush's pragmatic policies on China. This has already been proven by the stable development of relations between the two countries during the better part of Obama's first year in office. However, by the end of the year, relations between China and the United States appeared to be heading into some troubled waters. This paper begins with some thoughts on the election of an opposition candidate in general and that of Obama in particular in terms of its impact on China-U.S. relations. Then, it discusses the opportunities and challenges the election of Obama posed to China-U.S. relations. Afterward, it comes up with some speculations on the prospects for China-U.S. relations. And finally, it makes a preliminary assessment of the impact of Obama's election on China-U.S. relations during the first year of the Obama administration.
Strong Adsorption of Al-Doped Bilayer Graphene Toward Anticancer Cisplatin

The adsorption of cisplatin on pristine monolayer graphene (MLG), pristine bilayer graphene (BLG) and Al-doped BLG (Al-BLG) was investigated using density functional theory. The obtained results showed that pristine MLG and pristine BLG were not sensitive to cisplatin. Adsorption energy can be primarily influenced by the atomic species rather than the adsorption position. Moreover, it is strong chemisorption of hollow-site Al-BLG (H-Al-BLG) toward cisplatin. The most stable configurations are the Pt or Cl atom interaction with the Al atom of H-Al-BLG. In conclusion, H-Al-BLG is a kind of potential high quality delivery carrier for anticancer cisplatin.
Optimal Grade Transition for Quality Control of Continuous Polymerization Reactor

An optimal grade transition policy is essential when several grades of polymers are produced in the same continuous stirred tank reactor. We discuss an optimal grade transition to minimize the raw material and energy costs of the transition operation as well as to shorten the transition time. We show that a combination of regulatory control and dynamic optimization is very effective for the optimal grade transition of a continuous polymerization reactor.

Lower limb exoskeleton is a typical wearable robot to assist human motion and improve physiological power. However, the control performance and stability are affected by some unknown model parameters and control algorithms. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the model parametric identification and the control design of lower extremity exoskeleton. Firstly, the two degree-of-freedom (DoF) exoskeleton model is constructed by the Lagrange technique. Then the biogeography-based learning particle swarm optimization (BLPSO) is used to optimize the B-spline function parameters and the smooth stimulated trajectories is designed. Meanwhile, the BLPSO is also adopted to identify unknown model parameters of the exoskeleton based on the torques and the joint angles. To decline the negative effect of parametric identification error of exoskeleton, the passive backstepping controller is proposed to improve the tracking performance of human-robot motion. Furthermore, the active admittance controller is adopted to improve the motion comfort of tester. Finally, the comparative experimental results are verified on the platform, which show the BLPSO algorithm has better parametric identification accuracy than PSO and GA. Furthermore, the comparative results have verified that the proposed controller can improve the tracking behavior and reduce the human-robot interaction torque in wearable motion.

The widespread use of pesticides in rice has caused the resurgence of the small brown planthopper (SBPH), Laodelphax striatellus. In addition to inciting damage by feeding on phloem cells, SBPH also functions as a vector for rice stripe virus (RSV), which can cause serious yield losses. In general, studies focused on pesticide-induced stimulation of SBPH populations have focused on the insects; little information is available on the impact of pesticides on RSV transmission by SBPH. The present study investigated the effects of two pesticides (validamycin and triazophos) on the fecundity and RSV transmission ability of SBPH. Our results demonstrated that the fecundity of non-viruliferous (naïve) or viruliferous SBPH was enhanced by exposure to triazophos at the LC20 and validamycin at 200 mg L−1. Meanwhile, the increased number of eggs produced by viruliferous females treated with pesticides was larger than those from naïve females. Exposure to validamycin caused an increase in horizontal transmission of RSV; furthermore, vertical viral transmission rates of SBPH were significantly increased by exposure to triazophos. The present study provides valuable information for understanding the mechanisms underlying the resurgence of SBPH and subsequent outbreaks of RSV.

In our recent work (Ma et al., in Planta 229(3):457-469, 2009a and 229(4):1077-1086, 2009b), two three-intron type III PKS genes, PcPKS1 and PcPKS2, were isolated from Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb. et Zucc. Phylogenetic and functional analyses revealed PcPKS1 is a three-intron chalcone synthase (CHS) gene, and PcPKS2 is found to be a three-intron benzalacetone synthase (BAS) gene. The regular CHS encoded by a single intron gene have not been isolated and characterized from P. cuspidatum. In this work a further CHS with one intron (PcPKS3) and a stilbene synthase (STS) gene with three-intron (PcPKS5) were isolated and characterized by functional and phylogenetic analyses. In comparison with PcPKS1, a bifunctional enzyme with both CHS and BAS activity, the enzymatic product of recombinant PcPKS3 was naringenin, bis-noryangonin (BNY) and 4-coumaroyltriacetic acid lactone (CTAL) occurred as side products. The PcPKS5 synthesized resveratrol and a trace amount of naringenin from p-coumaroyl-CoA. To our knowledge, PcPKS5 is the first reported three-intron STS gene in flowering plants. In this work, we speculated that this involved a possible evolutionary route of plant-specific type III PKS superfamily in P. cuspidatum.
