        Adsorption of Congo Red dye by native amine and carboxyl modified biomass of Funalia trogii: Isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics mechanisms

        Native, iminodiacetic acid and triethylenetetraamine modified biomasses of Funalia trogii were used for removal of Congo Red dye (CRD) from aqueous medium. The native and modified fungal biomasses were characterized using ATR-FTIR, Zeta potential, contact angle studies and analytical methods. FTIR studies of the native and chemically modified adsorbent preparations show that amine, carboxyl and hydroxyl groups are involved in the adsorption of the model dye (i.e., Congo Red). The maximum adsorption of the CRD on the native, carboxyl and amine groups modified fungal biomasses was obtained at pH 5.0. The amount of adsorbed dye on the adsorbent samples increased as the initial concentration of CRD in the solution increased to 200mg/L. The adsorption capacities of native, carboxyl groups and amine modified fungal preparations were 90.4, 153.6 and 193.7mg/g dry adsorbents, respectively. The data was fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model, and followed the pseudo-second-order equations. Thermodynamic parameters (Go, Ho and So) were also calculated. The results showed that triethylenetetraamine (TETA) modified biomass of F. trogii presented an excellent dye removal performance and can be used in various environmental applications such as various micro-pollutants removal from aqueous medium.

        Responses of Holstein Cows to Different Bovine Somatotropin (bST) Treatments during the Transition Period and Early Lactation

        Major objective was to evaluate three doses of bST (POSILAC(R)) injected into Holstein cows during the transition period and through 56 d of lactation for potential to improve DMI, BCS, BW, metabolites, hormones, IGF-I and milk production. Biweekly injections of bST (0, 5.1, 10.2, or 15.3 mg bST/d) began 28 d before expected parturition and continued through 56 d postpartum. Twenty-three of the 25 multiparous Holstein cows assigned randomly to four groups completed experiment (7, 5, 6 and 5 cows/group, respectively). The DMI, BW and BCS were recorded weekly throughout the prepartum and postpartum periods and blood samples were collected thrice weekly for analyses of ST, insulin, $T_{4}$, $T_{3}$, IGF-I, glucose and NEFA. Milk yields were recorded daily through 60 d postpartum and milk components measured once weekly. Mathematical model for data analyses for prepartum and postpartum periods included treatment, calving month, and the two-factor interaction. Cows injected with 10.2 and 15.3 mg bST prepartum had greater mean prepartum concentrations of ST and IGF-I. Prepartum injections of bST did not affect prepartum BW or BCS. On average, cows injected postpartum better maintained their BCS during first 60 d of lactation (3.15$\pm$0.06, 3.12$\pm$0.007, 3.20$\pm$0.006 and 3.58$\pm$0.009). Treatments did not affect mean prepartum DMI but cows injected with 15.3 mg bST/d had greatest DMI and greatest mean daily MY during the first 3 wk and tended to be greater during first 60 d of lactation. Cows injected with two highest bST doses (10.1 and 15.2 mg/d) had greater mean postpartum concentrations of ST and $T_{3}$, but IGF-I, $T_{4}$, glucose and NEFA did not differ across groups. No adverse effects of bST treatment were observed.

        An investigation on use of colemanite powder as abrasive in abrasive waterjet cutting (AWJC)

        In the present study, the cutting performance outputs (surface roughness, surface waviness and kerf taper angle) of colemanite powder as abrasive in abrasive waterjet cutting (AWJC) with varying traverse rate and abrasive flow rate were investigated experimentally. The performance outputs were compared to that of garnet which is in common use in industry as abrasive in AWJC industry. Al7075, marble,glass, Ti6Al4V and a composite material were selected as sample materials in the experiments. Furthermore, colemanite powder was mixed with garnet powder at certain proportions and the obtained surface characteristics were compared with those cut with pure garnet powder. It is found experimentally that in spite of higher amount of colemanite powder consumption with respect to garnet to perform the same cutting action, the colemanite powder could be an alternative powder for AWJC process.

        Evaluation of IGF-I levels and serum protein profiles of diabetic cats and dogs

        In this study, we measured the insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I levels and evaluated the serum protein profiles of diabetic, insulin-treated, and healthy cats and dogs. The total IGF-I concentrations were 33.74 ± 3.4 ng/mL for normal, 25.8 ± 4.5 ng/mL for diabetic, and 180.4 ± 31.4 ng/mL for insulin-treated cats. IGF-I concentrations were 46.4 ± 6.6 ng/mL for normal, 25.1 ± 4.1 ng/mL for diabetic, and 303.0 ± 61.3 ng/mL for insulin-treated dogs. Total serum protein profiles were analyzed by SDS-PAGE. Fourteen bands ranging from 25 to 240 kDa in size were observed for cats, and 17 bands ranging from 25 to 289 kDa were observed for dogs. The densities of the bands differed among control, diabetic, and insulin-treated animals. In conclusion, we found that serum protein profiles and IGF-I concentrations were altered in both diabetic and insulin-treated animals. When judiciously interpreted in the light of other clinical and laboratory data, the techniques used in our study provide a valuable modality for measuring the severity of diabetes mellitus in dogs and cats.

        Prepartum Feeding of Cationic or Anionic Diets to Holstein Cows Given 30 or 60 Day Dry Periods: Comparison of Dry Matter Intake, Physiological Measures and Milk Production

        Eighty-four Holstein cows were used to evaluate effects of feeding two diets that differed in dietary cation-anion difference (cationic; +28 or anionic; -138 mEq/kg DM) on prepartum and postpartum dry matter intake (DMI), body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), serum Ca concentrations and on subsequent milk production and composition. Treatments were in a $2{\times}3{\times}2$ factorial arrangement that included prepartum diet, dry period length (30 d dry, 30 d dry+estradiol cypionate (ECP), and 60 d dry), and prepartum and postpartum bST ($POSILAC^{(R)}$ 10.2 mg/d). No interaction of prepartum diet with dry period length or bST supplementation was detected for any measure evaluated either prepartum or postpartum. No significant effects of prepartum diet on prepartum DMI, BW or BCS were observed. Mean DMI during the first 28 d postpartum were similar for cows fed the cationic or anionic diets prepartum (25.5 vs. 26.1 kg/d). During postpartum wk 1 to 14, no differences in mean BW or BCS were detected due to prepartum diet fed but decreases for both groups were observed during the first 6 wk postpartum. No differences due to prepartum diet were observed for mean milk or 3.5% FCM yields or for milk composition during the first 10 wk of lactation. Similarly, mean milk yield of cows during the first 21 wk did not differ significantly due to prepartum diet fed (38.5 vs. 38.6 kg/d). Overall, cows fed the prepartum cationic or anionic diets had similar mean postpartum serum concentrations of Ca (9.34 vs. 9.35 mg/dl). Subsequent milk production, milk composition and concentrations of Ca did not differ. Importantly, the two prepartum diets were equally satisfactory in minimizing incidence of milk fever and in supporting initiation of lactation, irrespective of dry period length and supplemental ECP and bST.

        Azo Dye Removal Using Free and Immobilized Fungal Biomasses: Isotherms, Kinetics and Thermodynamic Studies

        In this study, Lentinus concinnus biomass was immobilized in polyvinyl alcohol/polyethyleneoxide hydrogels (PVA/PEO; referred as composite biomass) and used for removal of Reactive Yellow 86 dye (RY-86) from aqueous solution using free fungal biomass as a control system. The free fungal and composite fungal biomasses were characterized using ATR-FTIR, SEM and analytical methods. FTIR studies of the adsorbent preparations show that carboxylate, hydroxyl and amine groups should be involved in adsorption of the RY-86 dye. The adsorption of RY-86 dye on these adsorbents increased as the initial concentration of RY-86 dye in the medium increased up to 200 mg/l. The maximum RY-86 dye adsorption for the free fungal and composite fungal biomasses, was obtained as 190.2 and 87.6, respectively, using 200 mg/l initial dye concentration, at 25 oC, and at pH 5.0 with 2.0 h contact. The equilibrium data were well described with the Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models. The adsorption of RY-86 dye was fitted best by the pseudo second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔGo, ΔHo, and ΔSo) showed that RY-86 dye adsorption on both adsorbents were spontaneous process.

        Preparation and Characterization of Poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-poly(ethyl-eneglycol-methacrylate)/Hydroxypropyl-chitosan) Hydrogel Films:Adhesion of Rat Mesenchymal Stem Cells

        This study examined the effects of the surface properties of the materials, such as the hydroxyl, methyl and amino groups, on rat bone marrow derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) seeding. A series of hydrogels were prepared in film form using 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (pHEMA), poly(ethyleneglycol) methacrylate (PEG-MA),and/or hydroxypropyl-chitosan (HPC). The physicochemical properties of these hydrogel films, such as water content, functional groups, contact angle, surface energy and thermal properties were affected by the composition of the materials. The ability of the MSCs to form colonies, as well as their viability on these materials were also analyzed. The water content of the hydrogel films increased with increasing PEG-MA and HPC ratio in the hydrogel. Contact angle measurements of the surface of the hydrogel films demonstrated that all the materials gave rise to a significantly hydrophilic surface compared to pure pHEMA. The blood protein interactions and platelet adhesion were reduced significantly on the surface of the materials upon the incorporation of PEG-MA compared to the control pure pHEMA and vice versa for HPC. The ability of the MSCs to adhere and form colonies on these materials was also analyzed. The results showed that these materials are suitable candidates to isolate and expand MSCs.

        SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies in Children with Chronic Disease from a Pediatric Gastroenterology Outpatient Clinic

        Purpose: At the beginning of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) epidemic, physicians paid close attention to children with chronic diseases to prevent transmission or a severe course of infection. We aimed to measure the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antibody levels in children with chronic gastrointestinal and liver diseases to analyze the risk factors for infection and its interaction with their primary disease. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels in patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases (n=141) and in healthy children (n=48) between January and February 2021. Results: During the pandemic, 10 patients (7%) and 1 child (2%) had confirmed COVID-19 infection (p=0.2). The SARS-CoV-2 antibody test was positive in 36 patients (25.5%) and 11 children (22.9%) (p=0.7). SARS-CoV-2 antibody positivity was found in 20.4%, 26.6%, 33.3%, and 33.3% of patients with chronic liver diseases, chronic gastrointestinal tract diseases, cystic fibrosis, and liver transplantation recipients, respectively (p>0.05, patients vs. healthy children). Risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 antibody positivity were COVID-19-related symptoms (47.2% vs. 14.2%, p=0.00004) and close contact with SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction-positive patients (69.4% vs. 9%, p<0.00001). The use, number, and type of immunosuppressants and primary diagnosis were not associated with SARS-CoV-2 antibody positivity. The frequency of disease activation/flare was not significant in patients with (8.3%) or without (14.2%) antibody positivity (p=0.35). Conclusion: SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in children with chronic gastrointestinal and liver diseases are similar to that in healthy children. Close follow-up is important to understand the long-term effects of past COVID-19 infection in these children.

        Cyclic-carbonate functionalized polymer brushes on polymeric microspheres: Immobilized laccase for degradation of endocrine disturbing compounds

        A novel support material containing cyclic carbonate group for facile enzyme immobilization was synthesized from [poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene)-graft-poly(glycidyl methacrylate)] “[PS-co-DVB-g-P(GMA)]” microsphere under carbon dioxide atmosphere. It was named as (poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene)-graft-poly(cyclic-carbonate methacrylate)] “[PS-co-DVB-g-P(CCMA)]” microsphere. Laccase was covalently immobilized using the microspheres carrying cyclic epoxy and cyclic carbonate groups. The amount of enzyme loading on the cyclic carbonate groups of the microspheres was 47.8 mg/g. The immobilized enzyme was used for degradation of Bisphenol A, and Congo Red dye in packed bed reactor. The immobilized laccase preserved its initial activity about 67.5% and 93.0% for degradation of Bisphenol A and Conge Red, respectively.

      • Knowledge, Attitudes and Beliefs about Cervical Cancer and Human Papilloma Virus Vaccination with Related Factors in Turkish University Students

        Background: This study aimed to determine knowledge, attitudes and believes about cervical cancer and human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination with related factors in Turkish university students. Materials and Methods: This descriptive and cross sectional study was conducted between June-July 2013 in Hitit University located in Corum, a rural area to the East of Ankara. The population consisted of 550 university students who were training in first and last year from Faculties of Economics, Theology and Health. We reached 463 volunteer students without selection. The study of data was collected with a 44 item questionaire covering socio-demographic features, knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about cervical cancer, HPV and vaccination. Also for this study ethic committee report was taken from Bozok University. Data were evaluated with the SPSS 17.0 programme using the Ki kare test with P<0.05 accepted as statistically significant. Results: It was seen that there was a statistically significant variation between classrooms and departments of students with knowledge about cervical cancer and human papilloma virus and vaccine (p<0.001; p<0.01; p<0.05). Also we found low attitudes to thinking about taking HPV vaccination of girls and their children in the future. Conclusions: In light of the study findings; it was concluded that knowledge levels, beliefs and attitudes of the university students about cervical cancer, HPV infection and HPV vaccination were low.
