        Atomic processes leading to asymmetric divertor detachment in KSTAR L-mode plasmas

        <P>The experimentally observed in/out detachment asymmetry in KSTAR L-mode plasmas with deuterium (D) fueling and carbon walls has been investigated with the SOLPS-ITER code to understand its mechanism and identify important atomic processes in the divertor region. The simulations show that the geometrical combination of a vertical, inner target with a short poloidal connection from the <I>X</I>-point to the target and a much longer outer divertor leg on an inclined target lead to neutral accumulation towards the outer target, driving the outer target detachment at lower upstream density than is required for the inner target. This is consistent with available Langmuir probe measurements at both target plates, although the inner target profile is poorly resolved in these plasmas and further experiments with corroborating diagnostics are required to confirm this finding. The pressure and power loss factors defined in the two-point model (Stangeby 2018 <I>Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion</I> <B>60</B> 4; Kotov and Reiter 2009 <I>Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion</I> <B>51</B> 115002; Stangeby and Sang 2017 <I>Nucl. Fusion</I> <B>57</B> 056007; Moulton <I>et al</I> 2017 <I>Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion</I> <B>59</B> 6) of the divertor scrape-off layer (SOL) and the sources contributing to the loss factors are calculated through post-processing of the SOLPS-ITER results. The momentum losses are mainly driven by plasma-neutral interaction and the power losses by plasma-neutral interaction and carbon radiation. The presence of carbon impurities in the simulation enhances the pressure and power dissipation compared to the pure D case. Carbon radiation is a strong power loss channel which cools the plasma, but its effect on the pressure balance is indirect. Reduction of the electron temperature indirectly increases the momentum loss and increasing the volumetric reaction rates which are responsible for the loss of momentum. As a result, the addition of carbon saturates the momentum and power losses in the flux tube at lower upstream densities, reducing the roll-over threshold of the upstream density. The relative strengths of the various mechanisms contributing to momentum and power loss depend on the radial distance of the SOL flux tubes from the separatrix (near/far SOL) and the target (inner/outer target). This is related to the strong D<SUB>2</SUB> molecule accumulation near the outer strike point, which makes the deuterium gas density at the outer target 2–10 times higher than that at the inner target. A large portion of the recycled neutral particles from both targets reach and accumulate in the outer SOL, which is predominantly attributed to the target inclination and gap structure between the central and outboard divertors and hence to the impact of geometry. The accumulated neutrals enhance the reactions involving D<SUB>2</SUB>, which causes momentum and power loss.</P>

        The Effect of Slaughter Season on the Fatty Acid Profile in Four Types of Fat Deposits in Crossbred Beef Bulls

        The objective of this study was to determine the effect of slaughter season on the fatty acid profile in four types of fat deposits in crossbred (Polish Holstein Friesian Black-and-White${\times}$Limousine) beef bulls. The percentage share of fatty acids was determined by gas chromatography and were divided into the following categories of fatty acids: saturated (SFAs), unsaturated (UFAs), monounsaturated (MUFAs), polyunsaturated (PUFAs), desirable hypocholesterolemic (DFAs) and undesirable hypercholesterolemic (OFAs), n-3 and n-6. Perinephric fat was characterized by the highest SFA concentrations (59.89%), and subcutaneous fat had the highest MUFA content (50.63%). Intramuscular fat was marked by a high percentage share of PUFAs and the highest PUFA/SFA ratio. The slaughter season had a significant effect on the levels of C18:3, C20:4 ($p{\leq}0.01$) and conjugated linoleic acid ($p{\leq}0.05$). There was an interaction between the slaughter season and fat type for the content of C20:4 ($p{\leq}0.01$) and C20:5 ($p{\leq}0.05$). The results of this study show that beef from cattle slaughtered in the summer season has a higher nutritional value and more health-promoting properties.

        Evaluation of Ultra-Low Dose CT in the Diagnosis of Pediatric-Like Fractures Using an Experimental Animal Study

        Objective: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the performance of ultra-low dose CT for the diagnosis of pediatric-like fractures and ascertain the lowest dose level sufficient for diagnostics. Materials and Methods: Fifty-one bones of young pig cadavers were artificially fractured and subsequently examined by using a 64 multi-detector CT with 36 various dose levels down to a dose comparable with that of X-rays. Two pediatric radiologists analysed the CT scans according to the presence or absence of a fracture, determination of the fracture type and the displacement as well as the diagnostic certainty. For each dose protocol, a success rate for the correct determination of the above-mentioned CT analyses was calculated. A success rate of at least 95% was considered sufficient for diagnostics. Results: All but the lowest dose levels were sufficient to identify the fracture. Only the two lowest dose levels were insufficient to detect the fracture type. All dose levels were adequate for the identification of the displacement. The lowest dose level sufficient for diagnostics was 120 kVp, 11 mAs, and pitch 1.5, with a CTDIvol of 10% of a standard dose and an effective dose three times as large as that of X-rays. Conclusion: Ultra-low dose CT provides the feasibility of a significant dose reduction, still allowing sufficient diagnostics of pediatric-like fractures.         A Food Supplement with Antioxidative Santa Herba Extract Modulates Energy Metabolism and Contributes to Weight Management

        The plant Santa herba (Eriodictyon californicum) contains high flavonoids, thus potentially exerting beneficial effects in context of obesity, often accompanied by inflammation and metabolic imbalance. The study assessed the impact of Santa herba on oxidative stress, energy metabolism, weight reduction, and eating behavior, combining in vitro models with clinical data. Santa herba binding of the adenosine receptor A2A (ADORA2A) was assessed using a radioligand binding assay. A Caenorhabditis elegans model was used to determine mobility boosting effects, and Santa herba oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) values were determined in comparison to antioxidative plants. Clinical data, that is, body weight and appetite-related parameters, were obtained from overweight and obese women receiving either Santa herba or placebo for 12 weeks. Results showed that Santa herba extract binds to ADORA2A, stimulates C. elegans motility (+7.5%) and locomotion, and yields high antioxidative capacities (ORAC: 819 trolox equivalent). Clinical data, obtained from 24 overweight and 25 obese women (mean: 47.5 years), demonstrated a reduced body weight (P = .042) and body fat (P = .044), and by trend reduced leptin levels (P = .065) in women with obesity after Santa herba consumption compared to placebo. In conclusion, Santa herba extract has energizing and antioxidative properties and may aid in weight management of people with obesity.

        Purslane Extract and Glucose Homeostasis in Adults with Type 2 Diabetes: A Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial of Efficacy and Safety

        Purslane extract (PE) is derived from Portulaca oleracea L., a medicinal plant used in traditional medicine for its antidiabetic properties. This randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of PE in improving glucose control, blood pressure, and lipid profile in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) treated with a single oral hypoglycemic agent at baseline. Subjects were randomized to treatment with three capsules of PE/day or a matched placebo. Change from baseline to the week 12 end-of-follow-up visit measures of glucose homeostasis, hemodynamics, and lipid profile was compared by treatment assignment. In addition, these measures were evaluated in a subgroup of ‘‘responders,’’ defined as patients whose week 12 HbA1c was lower than baseline values, regardless of treatment assignment. This group was further assessed in subgroups of baseline oral hypoglycemic treatment. A total of 63 participants were treated with either PE (n = 31, 11 females, mean age 52.4 ± 7.9 years) or matched placebo (n = 32, 11 females, mean age 58.3 ± 10.8 years). In the total cohort, systolic blood pressure declined significantly more in the PE group than the placebo group: -7.5 ± 5.0 versus -0.01 ± 0.3 mmHg, P < .0001. In the responders’ subgroup, HbA1c declined significantly more in the PE group than the placebo group: -0.8% ± 0.4% versus -0.6% ± 0.5%, P = .03. Few adverse events were reported. These were mild and did not differ by treatment assignment. PE appears to be a safe, adjunct treatment for T2DM, significantly reducing systolic blood pressure in the total cohort and HbA1c in the subgroup of responders.

        A rapid non-destructive DNA extraction method for insects and other arthropods

        Preparation of arthropods for morphological identification often damages or destroys DNA within the specimen. Conversely, DNA extraction methods often destroy the external physical characteristics essential for morphological identification. We have developed a rapid, simple and non-destructive DNA extraction technique for arthropod specimens. This technique was tested on four arthropod orders, using specimens that were fresh, preserved by air drying, stored in ethanol, or collected with sticky or propylene glycol traps. The technique could be completed in 20 min for Coleoptera, Diptera and Hemiptera, and 2 min for the subclass Acarina, without significant distortion, discolouration, or other damage to the specimens.
