• Lessons Learned from Two Development Initiatives in a Rural, Coastal Community

        Grimes, Jody 한국국제지역사회개발학회 2001 地域社會開發學術誌 Vol.11 No.1

Both the human capital of a community's residents and the social capital embedded in their relationships will impact how effectively community members work together to identify and solve problems and take advantage of new opportunities. This paper compares the availability and deployment of human capital and social capital within two development projects in a rural community to help explain the success of one and the failure of the other.

Significance of Cellular Senescence in Aging and Cancer

        Angela Grimes,Sathees B.C.Chandra 대한암학회 2009 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.41 No.4

Cellular senescence is a mechanism that induces an irreversible growth arrest in all somatic cells. Senescent cells are metabolically active but lack the capacity to replicate. Evolutionary theories suggest that cellular senescence is related to the organismal decline occurring in aging organisms. Also, such theories describe senescence as an antagonistically pleiotropic process that can have beneficial or detrimental effect on the organism. Cellular senescence is believed to be involved in the cellular changes observed as aging progresses. Accumulation of senescent cells appears to occur widely as the organism ages. Furthermore, senescence is a key element of the tumor suppressor pathways. Therefore, it is part of the natural barrier against the uncontrolled proliferation observed in cellular development of malignancies in multicellular organisms. Activation of the senescence process guarantees a limited number of cellular replications. The genetic network led by p53 is responsible for activation of senescence in response to DNA damage and genomic instability that could lead to cancer. A better comprehension of the genetic networks that control the cell cycle and induce senescence is important to analyze the association of senescence to longevity and diseases related to aging. For these reasons, experimental research both in vitro and in vivo aims to develop anticancer therapies based on senescence activation. The last decade of research on role and function of senescence in aging and cancer are discussed in this paper.

East Asian Financial Regionalism in Support of the Global Financial Architecture? The Political Economy of Regional Nesting

William W. Grimes 동아시아연구원 2006 Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.6 No.3

East Asian financial regionalism has advanced significantly since the rejection of Japans Asian Monetary Fund proposal in 1997. Key ASEAN+3 initiatives include the Chiang Mai Initiative (CMI), which is designed to provide emergency liquidity to economies experiencing currency crisis, and the Asian Bond Market Initiative (ABMI), which seeks to develop regional bond markets. Surprisingly, despite assertive regionalist rhetoric and their intellectual origins in the analysis of the 1997-98 Asian Financial Crisis, these initiatives are explicitly designed to complement existing features of the global financial architecture, including IMF conditionality and global financial standards. The nesting of East Asian financial regionalism within the global financial architecture results from the political-economic interests of the leading economies of the region. In the absence of a major change in the political-economic environment, nesting is a stable equilibrium and is unlikely to change.

The Biocompatibility of Nanoporous Acupuncture Needles

Sorcar, Saurav,Grimes, Craig A.,In, Su-Il Elsevier Science B.V., Amsterdam 2018 JOURNAL OF ACUPUNCTURE AND MERIDIAN STUDIES Vol.11 No.3

Abstract

We investigate the biocompatibility of a new class of acupuncture needles that possess a hierarchical nano/microscale porous surface topology, referred to as porous acupuncture needles (PAN). The PAN is synthesized via a facile electrochemical anodization technique by which a surface area approximately 20 times greater than a conventional acupuncture needle, of approximately the same diameter, is obtained. PAN biocompatibility is evaluated using a variety of standard tests, with results indicating that the PAN can safely be used within therapeutic practice.

      • Facile fabrication of a noble metal-free photocatalyst: TiO2 nanotube arrays covered with reduced graphene oxide

        Razzaq, A.,Grimes, C.A.,In, S.I. Pergamon Press ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2016 Carbon Vol.98 No.-

One-dimensional TiO2 nanotubes arrays (TNT) are the subject of great current interest among the photocatalysis research community, however the relatively large bandgap that provides TiO2 with its excellent corrosion stability severely limits its absorption of solar spectrum energy. To increase the optical absorption of TiO2 while maintaining its otherwise commendable properties a number of approaches have been investigated including doping with non-metal or noble metal co-catalysts such as platinum, coupling with low band gap semiconductors, and the synthesis of carbon-based TiO2 composites. During the past few years graphene-based TiO2 nanostructures have been found to offer improved photoelectrochemical properties, with graphene enhancing light absorption as well as promoting rapid charge transfer. With the aim of replacing expensive noble metal co-catalysts, herein we report a noble metal-free novel nanostructured photocatalytic material fabricated using a facile synthesis approach, comprising a one-dimensional array of TNT covered with a reduced graphene oxide-TiO2 nanoparticles (rGO-TiO2 NP) composite. The novel nanostructure exhibits significantly improved photocurrent density and photochemical activity via conversion of CO2 into methane under simulated solar light irradiation. The improved performance appears due to the combined effect of enhanced light absorption and effective charge separation promoted by the rGO. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Multilayered Polymer-Coated Carbon Nanotubes To Deliver Dasatinib

Moore, Thomas L.,Grimes, Stuart W.,Lewis, Robert L.,Alexis, Frank American Chemical Society 2014 MOLECULAR PHARMACEUTICS Vol.11 No.1

Multilayered, multifunctional polymer coatings were grafted onto carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using a one-pot, ring-opening polymerization in order to control the release kinetic and therapeutic efficacy of dasatinib. Biocompatible, biodegradable multilayered coatings composed of poly(glycolide) (PGA) and poly(lactide) (PLA) were polymerized directly onto hydroxyl-functionalized CNT surfaces. Sequential addition of monomers into the reaction vessel enabled multilayered coatings of PLA-PGA or PGA-PLA. Poly(ethylene glycol) capped the polymer chain ends, resulting in a multifunctional amphiphilic coating. Multilayer polymer coatings on CNTs enabled control of the anticancer drug dasatinib’s release kinetics and enhanced the in vitro therapeutic efficacy against U-87 glioblastoma compared to monolayer polymer coatings.

Graphic Abstract
