A systematic review of treatment and outcomes in patients with mandibular coronoid process hyperplasia

        Griet I.L. Parmentier,Margaux Nys,Laurence Verstraete,Constantinus Politis 대한구강악안면외과학회 2022 대한구강악안면외과학회지 Vol.48 No.3

Treatment of mandibular coronoid process hyperplasia (MCPH) has been described and explored in the literature. This systematic review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the surgical and non-surgical treatment options for MCPH in pediatric and adult populations. Three databases were searched for treatment of MCPH patients (MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science). Two reviewers selected case reports and case series based on titles and abstracts. Finally, 55 studies reporting a total of 127 cases were included for qualitative synthesis and data extraction. The mean age at symptom onset was 15.6 years, while the mean age at diagnosis was 23.5 years. Of the included cases, 83.7% were male, and the condition was bilateral in more than 81% of the cases. Coronoidectomy was performed in 82.7% of the included cases, while coronoidotomy was performed in 3.9% of the cases. In 85.0% of the surgically treated cases, the approach was intraoral. The mean maximal intraoperative mouth opening was 38.1 mm compared with 16.5 mm at diagnosis. The mean maximal postoperative mouth opening was 35.3 mm, and the mean follow-up period was 16.3 months. Maximum mouth opening was achieved intraoperatively, and non-surgical treatment after surgery aims to reduce the risk of relapse. Additional research with a higher level of evidence is necessary to confirm these findings.

Variability of Suspended Particulate Matter in the Bohai Sea from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI)

        Kevin Ruddick,Quinten Vanhellemont,Jing Yan,Griet Neukermans,Guomei Wei,Shaoling Shang 한국해양과학기술원 2012 Ocean science journal Vol.47 No.3

This study assesses the performance of the Geostationary Ocean Imager (GOCI) for mapping of suspended particulate matter in the Bohai Sea, a turbid water region. GOCI imagery for remote sensing reflectance and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) is analysed in detail for two days in June 2011 (8 images per day). Both instantaneous and daily composite maps are considered and a comparison is made with corresponding reflectance and TSS products from MODIS-AQUA. Results show TSS distributions corresponding to previous studies of the region. The advantage of the higher acquisition frequency (8 images/day instead of 1) offered by GOCI is clearly demonstrated in the daily composite which is more complete during this period of scattered but moving clouds. Consideration of temporal variation over the day indicates low natural variability but some artificial variability from processing errors – this analysis provides a first indication of how the higher frequency of data from geostationary ocean colour could lead to improved data quality control via temporal coherency outlier detection. While there is room for improvement on the GOCI calibration, atmospheric correction and retrieval algorithms, the current study suggests that the GOCI data can already be used now to study qualitatively sediment dynamics except in the extremely turbid waters which are masked out of the current dataset. In a wider context, it is considered that the technical challenges of geostationary ocean colour have been met by the GOCI concept, and, notwithstanding potential improvements on the concept and data processing methods, it is recommended that this mission serve as a model for future geostationary ocean colour sensors over Europe/Africa and the Americas.

      • The 'Architect-friendliness' Of Six Building Performance Simulation Tools: A Comparative Study

Weytjens, Lieve,Attia, Shady,Verbeeck, Griet,De Herde, Andre Sustainable Building Research Center 2011 International journal of sustainable building tech Vol.2 No.3

Concerning net zero energy buildings, providing early design support for architects has never been more important. In this context, building performance simulation tools could be a strong supportive technique, when integrated early in the architectural design process. However, despite the available range of tools, most of them do not meet the architects' requirements. To identify this gap, this study compared the 'architect-friendliness' of six state-of-the-art simulation tools, to highlight the architects' requirements for these tools and to develop guidelines for researchers and tool developers. The examined tools included ECOTECT, IES/VE - Sketch-Up, Energy10, eQuest, HEED, and Design Builder. The analysis was based on an extensive list of criteria defining the user-friendliness of tools from an architect's point of view. The results show that no single tool is entirely adequate to assist the architect's decision-making process. One of the major limitations is the poor communication and visualization of the output results.

      • Concerted Mitigation of O···H and C(π)···H Interactions Prospects Sixfold Gain in Optical Nonlinearity of Ionic Stilbazolium Derivatives

        Cole, Jacqueline M.,Lin, Tze-Chia,Edwards, Alison J.,Piltz, Ross O.,Depotter, Griet,Clays, Koen,Lee, Seung-Chul,Kwon, O-Pil American Chemical Society 2015 ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES Vol.7 No.8

DAST (4-dimethylamino-N-methyl-4-stilbazolium tosylate) is the most commercially successful organic nonlinear optical (NLO) material for frequency-doubling, integrated optics, and THz wave applications. Its success is predicated on its high optical nonlinearity with concurrent sufficient thermal stability. Many chemical derivatives of DAST have therefore been developed to optimize their properties; yet, to date, none have surpassed the overall superiority of DAST for NLO photonic applications. This is perhaps because DAST is an ionic salt wherein its NLO-active cation is influenced by multiple types of subtle intermolecular forces that are hard to quantify, thus, making difficult the molecular engineering of better functioning DAST derivatives. Here, we establish a model parameter, eta(inter), that isolates the influence of intermolecular interactions on second-order optical nonlinearity in DAST and its derivatives, using second-harmonic generation (SHG) as a qualifier; by systematically mapping intercorrelations of all possible pairs of intermolecular interactions to eta(inter), we uncover a relationship between concerted intermolecular interactions and SHG output. This correlation reveals that a sixfold gain in the intrinsic second-order NLO performance of DAST is possible, by eliminating the identified interactions. This prediction offers the first opportunity to systematically design next-generation DAST-based photonic device nanotechnology to realize such a prospect.
