        Pressure Settlement Behaviour of Strip Footing Resting on Unreinforced and Tire Chips Reinforced Copper Slag

        The slag and waste tires are among the major wastes associated with the mining and automobile sectors, respectively. The disposal of such large quantities of waste requires immediate attention. This manuscript focusses on the application of copper slag under unreinforced and reinforced conditions as a load-bearing filling material in shallow foundations. For this purpose, model footing tests were conducted on copper slag under central and eccentric-inclined loading. The locally available sand was used as a reference. The parameters studied included the placement density, type of loading, tire chip content, and depth of reinforced zone. The pressure settlement behaviour of the copper slag was superior to local sand under central vertical as well as under eccentric inclined loading conditions. Quantitively, the bearing capacity increased by up to 21 times, when compared to the locally available sand. Furthermore, when mixed with tire chips, the bearing capacity of the copper slag increased by up to 1.41 times to that of the unreinforced case. The leaching potential of the copper slag was evaluated using toxicity characteristic leaching procedure tests. It was observed that the concentrations of the leached elements were well below the regulatory limits prescribed by the US, EPA. Henceforth, it can be concluded that the use of copper slag as a load-bearing filling material not only prevents the disposal of this waste into valuable land but also works as a sustainable alternative to prevalent ground improvement methods.

        Enhanced antifouling performance of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) blended poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC/HNTs) ultrafiltration membranes: For water treatment

        Novel halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) embedded poly(vinyl chloride) ultrafiltration (UF) membrane (PVC/HNTs) were prepared and examined by FTIR, FEG-SEM-EDX, TEM, and SPM. In PVC/HNTs 1 and PVC/HNTs 2 membrane, HNTs were finely distributed and membrane surface became smooth. Pure water flux of the prepared membrane increased from 127.33 L m−2 h−1 for PVC/HNTs 0 membrane to 212.22 L m−2 h−1 for PVC/HNTs 2 membrane. Flux recovery ratio increased from 77.23% (PVC/HNTs0) to 92.10% (PVC/HNTs2) for BSA and 71.42% (PVC/HNTs0) to 92.16% (PVC/HNTs2) for sewage water. BSA rejection ratio was 93% for PVC/HNTs 2 membrane and the addition of HNTs as fillers increased the maximum tensile strength of the membranes.

        With increasing technology and decreasing amount of time in everyone's lives, the luxury of home automation is being deeply valued. This paper will provide an efficient solution for a reliable, economical and user friendly home automation system. In this system we will be using Raspberry pi to connect to the home network through which we can access the home appliances from across the globe. PHP Script has been used for creation of web portal through which the user can provide the inputs for controlling the appliances. Python program has been used in Raspberry pi which will turn devices on and off. Connection between PHP and Python has been maintained using My SQL Database.

        Dosimetric Evaluation of Low-Dose Spillage Volumes for Head and Neck Cancer Using Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy and Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy Treatment Techniques

        Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the dosimetric difference between intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) in head and neck cancer (HNC). The study primarily focuses on low-dose spillage evaluation between these two techniques. Methods: This retrospective study involved 45 patients with HNC. The treatment plans were generated using the IMRT and VMAT techniques for all patients. Dosimetric comparisons were performed in terms of target coverage, organ-at-risk (OAR) sparing, and various parameters, including conformity index, uniformity index, homogeneity index, conformation number, low-dose volumes, and normal tissue integral dose (NTID). Results: No significant (P>0.05) difference in planning target volume coverage (D<sub>95%</sub>) was observed between IMRT and VMAT plans for supraglottic larynx, hard palate, and tongue cancers. A decrease in dose volumes ranging from 1 Gy to 30 Gy was observed for VMAT plans compared with those for IMRT plans, except for V<sub>1Gy</sub> and V<sub>30Gy</sub> for supraglottic larynx cancer and V<sub>1Gy</sub> for tongue cancer. Moreover, decreases (P<0.05) in NTID were observed for VMAT plans compared with that for IMRT plans in supraglottic larynx (4.50%), hard palate (12.80%), and tongue (7.76%) cancers. In contrast, a slight increase in monitor units for VMAT compared with those for IMRT in supraglottic larynx (0.46%), hard palate (2.54%), and tongue (7.56%) cancers. Conclusions: For advanced-stage HNC, both IMRT and VMAT offer satisfactory clinical plans. VMAT offers a conformal and homogeneous dose distribution with comparable OAR sparing and higher dose falloff outside the target volume than IMRT, which provides an edge to reduce the risk of secondary malignancies for HNC over IMRT.

        Kriging Analysis for Spatio-temporal Variations of Ground Level Ozone Concentration

        Exposure of high concentration of ground-level ozone (GLO) can trigger a variety of health problems including chest pain, coughing, throat irritation, asthma, bronchitis and congestion. There are substantial human and animal toxicological data that support health effects associated with exposure to ozone and associations have been observed with a wide range of outcomes in epidemiological studies. The aim of the present study is to estimate the spatial distributions of GLO using geostatistical method (ordinary kriging) for assessing the exposure level of ozone in the eastern part of Texas, U.S.A. GLO data were obtained from 63 U.S. EPA’s monitoring stations distributed in the region of study during the period January, 2012 to December, 2012. The descriptive statistics indicate that the spatial monthly mean of daily maximum 8 hour ozone concentrations ranged from 30.33 ppb (in January) to 48.05 (in June). The monthly mean of daily maximum 8 hour ozone concentrations was relatively low during the winter months (December, January, and February) and the higher values observed during the summer months (April, May, and June). The higher level of spatial variations observed in the months of July (Standard Deviation: 10.33) and August (Standard Deviation: 10.02). This indicates the existence of regional variations in climatic conditions in the study area. The range of the semivariogram models varied from 0.372 (in November) to 15.59 (in April). The value of the range represents the spatial patterns of ozone concentrations. Kriging maps revealed that the spatial patterns of ozone concentration were not uniform in each month. This may be due to uneven fluctuation in the local climatic conditions from one region to another. Thus, the formation and dispersion processes of ozone also change unevenly from one region to another. The ozone maps clearly indicate that the concentration values found maximum in the north-east region of the study area in most of the months. Part of the coastal area also showed maximum concentrations during the months of October, November, December, and January.

      • Congestion Detection and Reduction Scheme in VANETs

        Vehicle monitoring is an intrinsic need and a requirement for many of the safety applications anticipated for vehicular networks. The major objective to achieve accurate and pervasive localization is the need of the hour to attain location based services in vehicular adhoc networks (VANETs). In this paper, we present a mobility scenario that is developed in a urban scenario with the help of VISSIM tool that helps us to identify the trace of the vehicle. VISIM generates the movement patterns of vehicles in a given network, considering various parameters and constraints like minimum distance between the vehicles, maximum speed on the road and the traffic controlled scenarios i.e. traffic signals and lights.

        Modafinil Dependence and Hypersexuality: A Case Report and Review of the Evidence

        Apart from sleep wake disorders, nowadays, modafinil is being prescribed for several psychiatric disorders including depression. Despite being reported as to be having very low abuse potential, cases of modafinil dependence had come to the limelight. In this case report, we describe a 35 year old man with bipolar affective disorder while in remission who developed modafinil dependence and later on, had hypersexuality when he increased the dose of modafinil from 400 to 1,000 mg/day. Existing literature suggests that modafinil when taken above prescribed doses can cause many side effects ranging from nausea, vomiting to psychotic exacerbation and mania. However, hypersexuality as a side effect of modafinil overuse is not commonly seen. The exact pathophysiological mechanism of modafinil induced hypersexuality is not clear. Clinicians should be aware of possibility of modafinil leading to dependence and this rare significant side effect of modafinil.

        Correlation between Morphological, Chemical and RAPD Markers forAssessing Genetic Diversity in Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal

        Genetic diversity among 14 Withania accessions were studied using morphological, chemical, and RAPD (Rapid Amplification ofPolymorphic DNA) markers. On the basis of morphological variation and maximum assimilation of chemical constituents, wild accessionswere considered elite as compared to cultivated. The molecular study showed that a total of 12 DNA fragments were amplifiedwith five random decamer primers 75% of which were polymorphic. Genetic similarity matrix based on the Dice index detected coefficientsranging from 0.556 to 0.941. These coefficients were used to construct a dendrogram using unweighted pair group method witharithmetic mean (UPGMA). These accessions were clustered into two major groups; the first group included AGB-009, AGB-012,AGB-042, AGB-030, AGB-053, AGB-019, AGB-017, AGB-002, and AGB-003; the second included AGB-025, AGB-001, AGB-036,AGB-015, and AGB-055. The highest similarity among the Ashwagandha accessions was observed between AGB-009 and AGB-030,AGB-009 and AGB-012, AGB-042 and AGB-030, AGB-025 and AGB-001, AGB-036 and AGB-015, AGB-015 and AGB-055 andbetween AGB-015 and AGB-055. The most distant populations in the dendrogram were AGB-053 and AGB-055. The combination ofmorphological, chemical, and molecular markers assessment will be useful in studying the genetic diversity of Withania for identification,conservation, breeding, improvement activities, and in order to achieve elite type in terms of bioactive metabolites
