        The effects of temperature on the growth rate and nitrogen content of invasive Gracilaria vermiculophylla and native Gracilaria tikvahiae from Long Island Sound, USA

        The red alga Gracilaria vermiculophylla, a species native to the waters of Korea and Japan, has invaded marine coastal areas of Europe and the Americas, thriving in conditions that differ from those of its native habitat. In recent years, G. vermiculophylla has been discovered in the Long Island Sound (LIS) estuary growing alongside the native congener Gracilaria tikvahiae. The goal of this study was to determine whether the two strains of G. vermiculophylla from different regions of the world have evolved genetic differences (i.e., ecotypic differentiation) or if the physiological performance of the strains simply reflects phenotypic plasticity. Two strains of G. vermiculophylla (isolated in Korea and LIS) and a strain of the LIS native G. tikvahiae were grown for four weeks under temperatures ranging from 20 to $34^{\circ}C$ using a temperature gradient table (all other environmental conditions were kept constant). At the end of each week, wet weight of each sample was recorded, and thalli were reduced to the original stocking density of $1gL^{-1}$ (excess biomass was preserved for tissue carbon and nitrogen analysis). Generally, the growth rates of Korean G. vermiculophylla > LIS G. vermiculophylla > G. tikvahiae. After one week of growth G. tikvahiae grew 9.1, 12.0, 9.4, and 0.2% $d^{-1}$, at temperatures of 20, 24, 29, and $34^{\circ}C$, respectively, while G. vermiculophylla (LIS) grew 6.6, 6.2, 5.7, and 3.6% $d^{-1}$. G. vermiculophylla (Korea) grew 15.4, 22.9, 23.2, and 10.1% $d^{-1}$, much higher than the two strains currently inhabiting the LIS. On average, the LIS G. vermiculophylla strain contained 4-5% DW N, while the Korean strain and G. tikvahiae had more modest levels of 2-3% N DW. However, tissue N content declined as temperature increased in LIS and Korean G. vermiculophylla. The non-native haplotype may have evolved genetic differences resulting in lower growth capacity while concentrating significantly more nitrogen, giving the non-native a competitive advantage.

        Demographers note that if current trends in ageing continue as predicted, a demographic revolution, wherein the proportions of the young and the old will undergo a historic crossover, will be felt in just three generations. This portrait of change in the world`s population parallels the magnitude of the industrial revolution-traditionally considered the most significant social and economic breakthrough in the history of humankind since the Neolithic period. It marked the beginning of a sustained movement towards modern economic growth in much the same way that globalization is today marking an unprecedented and sustained movement toward a "global culture". The demographic revolution, it is envisaged, will be at least as powerful.

        The Effect of Bariatric Surgery on Diabetic Retinopathy: Good, Bad, or Both?

        Bariatric surgery, initially intended as a weight-loss procedure, is superior to standard lifestyle intervention and pharmacological therapy for type 2 diabetes in obese individuals. Intensive medical management of hyperglycemia is associated with improved microvascular outcomes. Whether or not the reduction in hyperglycemia observed after bariatric surgery translates to improved microvascular outcomes is yet to be determined. There is substantial heterogeneity in the data relating to the impact of bariatric surgery on diabetic retinopathy (DR), the most common microvascular complication of diabetes. This review aims to collate the recent data on retinal outcomes after bariatric surgery. This comprehensive evaluation revealed that the majority of DR cases remain stable after surgery. However, risk of progression of pre-existing DR and the development of new DR is not eliminated by surgery. Instances of regression of DR are also noted. Potential risk factors for deterioration include severity of DR at the time of surgery and the magnitude of glycated hemoglobin reduction. Concerns also exist over the detrimental effects of postprandial hypoglycemia after surgery. In vivo studies evaluating the chronology of DR development and the impact of bariatric surgery could provide clarity on the situation. For now, however, the effect of bariatric surgery on DR remains inconclusive.

        성경의 도덕관념에 대한 그레고리우스 대 교황의 설교

        오늘날 설교자들의 소명은 초대 교회 시대의 소명과 다르지 않다. 오늘날 우리가 몸담고 살아가는 세상은 ‘그리스도인의 생활’에 새로운 도전들을 제기한다. 도덕적 설교는 모든 시대를 위해 필요한 것만이 아니라, 일생을 살아가는 모든 이를 위해 필요한 것이기도 하다. 삶 그 자체가 쇄신과 영적 노력과 회심이 이루어지는 지속적인 과정이기 때문이다. 대 그레고리우스의 『사목 규칙』은 설교자들에게 포괄적으로 충고를 해준다. “목자의 돌봄 없이 버려진 양 떼는 올바른 길에서 벗어나 방황합니다… 그리고 그 양 떼는 적이 쳐놓은 교묘한 덫에 더욱 쉽게 걸려듭니다.” 따라서 “자기 양 떼에게 천상의 아버지 집에 이르는 길을 제시하는 일은 교역자의 의무입니다.” 대 그레고리우스는 성경의 도덕관념을 설교할 필요성을 다른 이들에게 강요만 한 것이 아니라 교황 재임 초기 『사목 규칙』에서 매우 체계적으로 기술해 놓았던 충고를 자신이 먼저 실천하였다. 그래서 대 그레고리우스는 설교자에게 영적 생활에 대한 금광과 같은 통찰력과 함께 자신의 권고를 뒷받침해주는 성경 구절들을 제공한다. 항상 설교자는 준비된 청중과 그렇지 않은 청중 모두에게 어느 때이든 말씀을 설교하기도 해야 한다. 오늘날의 세속적이고 감각적인 가치가 범람하는 시대에 신자들은 설교를 통해서 거룩하고 행복한 생활로 부르시는 하느님의 크나큰 사랑을 느낄 뿐 아니라 교육을 받을 수 있다. 그러므로 대 그레그리우스의 조언은 설교자의 소명을 받은 모든 설교자에게 훈계하고 인도하는 것을 잊지 말라고 일러주는 역할을 하고 있다.

        This paper .discusses the GaAs HBT device and IC technology and its application to commercial wireless communication systems in the 0.8-6 GHz frequency range. Key performance/cost advantages of the GaAs HBT previously established over silicon bipolar and GaAs MESFET in this frequency regime are now being applied to critical RF front-end requirements of wireless voice and data communication systems. GaAs HBT components developed far such wireless systems include small-signal .and power functions which offer combinations of higher gain-bandwidth, higher efficiency, lower distortion, wider dynamic range and simpler design implementations. GaAs HBT/IC fabrication technology, device/IC performance and system applications are discussed.

        Thermodynamic Analysis of Nickel(II) and Zinc(II) Adsorption to Biochar

        <P>While numerous studies have investigated metal uptake from solution by biochar, few of these have developed a mechanistic understanding of the adsorption reactions that occur at the biochar surface. In this study, we explore a combined modeling and spectroscopic approach for the first time to describe the molecular level adsorption of Ni(II) and Zn(II) to five types of biochar. Following thorough characterization, potentiometric titrations were carried out to measure the proton (H<SUP>+</SUP>) reactivity of each biochar, and the data was used to develop protonation models. Surface complexation modeling (SCM) supported by synchrotron-based extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) was then used to gain insights into the molecular scale metal-biochar surface reactions. The SCM approach was combined with isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) data to determine the thermodynamic driving forces of metal adsorption. Our results show that the reactivity of biochar toward Ni(II) and Zn(II) directly relates to the site densities of biochar. EXAFS along with FT-IR analyses, suggest that Ni(II) and Zn(II) adsorption occurred primarily through proton-active carboxyl (−COOH) and hydroxyl (−OH) functional groups on the biochar surface. SCM-ITC analyses revealed that the enthalpies of protonation are exothermic and Ni(II) and Zn(II) complexes with biochar surface are slightly exothermic to slightly endothermic. The results obtained from these combined approaches contribute to the better understanding of molecular scale metal adsorption onto the biochar surface, and will facilitate the further development of thermodynamics-based, predictive approaches to biochar removal of metals from contaminated water.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        A Marine-Derived, Multi-Mineral Supplement Influences Bacterial Fermentation and Short Chain Fatty Acid Profile In Vitro

        Aquamin is a calcium-rich multi-mineral supplement derived from the red marine algae, Lithothamnion species. Calcium supplementation has been shown to exert a prebiotic-like effect on the gut microbiota and has been associated with distinct changes in lactate and short chain fatty acid (SCFA) production. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) subtype is associated with changes in SCFA levels compared with healthy controls. Using an ex vivo simulation model, and a fecal inoculum from a patient diagnosed with IBS, we evaluated the effects of Aquamin (at 6 and 30 mg/mL) on SCFAs and lactate production, pH and gas production, and human microbiota composition. Our results demonstrate that Aquamin increased SCFA production (acetate and propionate by 8% and 24%, respectively, at 30 mg/mL dose), significantly decreased lactate production (30 mg/mL), and increased colonic fluid pH without inducing changes in colonic gas production or gastrointestinal (GI) microbiota composition. These results indicate that Aquamin may play a role in optimizing GI microbial function in an ex vivo setting.
