Background Several studies have evaluated the possible association between polymorphisms or variants in Corticotropinreleasing hormone 1 receptor gene (CRHR1) with depression; however, results remain contradictory and heterogeneous. Objective To our knowledge, we conducted the frst comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating the association of the CRHR1 gene and the risk of depression. Methods A search online was conducted in databases for any CRHR1 genetic association studies in depression. Data were extracted for evaluation of pooled estimates using meta-analytic techniques. Statistical analyses were performed using the Comprehensive Meta-analysis, v2.0 software. Result A total of 1403 cases and 2353 mentally healthy controls were included in this study. We found a signifcant association of rs242941, rs1876828 and rs242939 variants of the CRHR1 gene with depression. No association of CRHR1 rs110402 and depression was observed. Conclusion Our meta-analysis shows that some variants of the CRHR1 gene (rs242941, rs1876828 and rs242939) might confer susceptibility to depression. Further studies with larger sample sizes need to be conducted.

In this study, a formulation of Bordetella pertussis proteoliposome (PLBp), diphtheria, and tetanus toxoids and alum (DT-PLBp) was evaluated as a trivalent vaccine candidate in BALB/c mice. Vaccine-induced protection was estimated using the intranasal challenge for pertussis and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to assess serological responses for diphtheria or tetanus. Both, diphtheria-tetanus-whole cell pertussis (DTP) and diphtheria-tetanus vaccines (DT) were used as controls. Animals immunized with DT-PLBp, PLBp alone, and DTP showed total reduction of CFU in lungs 7 days after intranasal challenge. Likewise, formulations DT-PLBp, DTP, and DT elicited antibody levels ≥2 IU/mL against tetanus and diphtheria, considered protective when neutralization tests are used. Overall, results showed that combination of PLBp with tetanus and diphtheria toxoids did not affect the immunogenicity of each antigen alone.

The corrosion behaviour and solubility of three bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide1 ([NTf2]) anion-basedionic liquids: 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([C12MIM][NTf2]),tributylmethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([N4441][NTf2]), and methyltrioctylammo-nium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([N1888][NTf2]), as a component in a mixture with different baseoils were analysed. Six polar oils suitable for use in lubrication were utilized as base oil. Solubility testswere performed by using turbidimetry, and corrosion was checked at 4 v/v% by examining the roughnessand chemical composition of the surface after 21 days. The results showed that long carbon chains in thecation improve the solubility greatly in diesters and slightly in polyolesters. Corrosion was not detected atthis concentration.

Studies to determine the population fluctuation of Diaphorina citri, vector of Candidatus Liberibacter sp., have been carried out mainly in commercial plantations, whereas less have focused in urban areas and their synchrony. The objectives of this work were to monitor D. citri adult populations in Murraya paniculata (OJ) in urban areas and in Persian lime (LM) orchards, to estimate the effect of some environmental factors and to evaluate the synchronization between these populations. Sampling was performed from September 2012 to August 2014 in Veracruz, México. Five urban areas and five commercial Persian lime plots close to each other were selected. Adult D. citri catches were made monthly with yellow traps. Vegetative shoots, temperature and relative humidity were measured throughout the sampling period. Adults of Diaphorina citri were captured in all the sampling sites throughout the two-years sampling period and the populations were more abundant in summer. Significant factors affecting trap catches were the presence of new shoots and temperature. Temperature and relative humidity enclosed a comfort zone between 26 and 28 °C and 75 to 85% respectively. Cross-correlation values were positive across hosts within the same locations and between locations, regardless of the distance, thus suggesting a spatial synchronization in trap catches. This spatial relationship represents a risk of infestation between host species because of the potential movement and dispersal

Atypical parathyroid adenoma (APA) is a rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and represents a diagnostic challenge since it is an intermediate form of parathyroid neoplasm of uncertain malignant potential with atypical histological features that require differential diagnosis of parathyroid carcinoma (PC). We present 2 cases of parathyroid crisis as a presentation of APA. The first case was that of a 56-year-old man with parathyroid crisis, constitutional syndrome, and anemia, with evidence of APA after en bloc resection, evolving with hungry bone syndrome after surgery and curation criteria at 6 months after parathyroidectomy (PTX). The second case was a 64-year-old woman with acute chronic kidney disease and parathyroid crisis, with evidence of APA after selective PTX and >50% reduction in parathyroid hormone levels after surgery; however, persistent PHPT at 6 months post-surgery was observed. These cases represented a diagnostic challenge due to their rare clinical presentation (parathyroid crisis), with a heterogeneous spectrum of target organ damage and infrequent symptoms (constitutional syndrome and acute chronic renal disease), in turn caused by a rare pathology (APA). The presentation of these patients may be indicative of PC; however, histopathological diagnosis is a key to the diagnosis of APA. The differential diagnosis of APA vs. PC in clinical practice is indispensable.

Sheep haemonchosis is a disease that causes anemia, diarrhea, weight loss, low production, and even death of young animals. This represents a negative economic impact on the livestock sector. For decades, chemicals have been used to control this parasitic disease; however, cases of anthelmintic resistance have increased around the world. For this reason, the search for control alternatives is necessary. Several studies have shown that edible mushrooms of Pleurotus genus have different medicinal properties, including nematicidal activity. In this study, the chromatographic fractionation of the hydroalcoholic extract of fruiting bodies Pleurotus djamor was carried out to identify and isolate the metabolites responsible for nematicidal activity. From the fractionation of the extract, the fraction PdR2 and the subfraction PdB were obtained, which were evaluated against Haemonchus contortus under in vitro conditions. The nematicidal effect of the fraction PdB in gerbils infected artificially with H. contortus was evaluated. Finally, the analysis of the PdB fraction by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance was carried out. The results showed that the PdB had 100% of egg hatching inhibition from 5 mg/mL. Regarding larvicidal activity, it presented >97.2% from 24 h to 20 mg/mL. The in vivo evaluation of the PdB fraction showed a reduction of H. contortus larvae of 92.56%. The compounds present in this fraction were the mixture of allitol and an unidentified terpene in a ratio of 9:1. The PdB fraction is a potential alternative for the control of H. contortus, where allitol and a terpene could be responsible for nematicidal activity.

The aim of this article is to evaluate the effect of fucoidan administration on insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity in overweight or obese adults. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was carried out in 25 obese or overweight volunteers. Thirteen patients received an oral dose of 500 mg of fucoidan once daily before breakfast and 12 patients received placebo for 3 months. Before and after the intervention, fasting glucose and 2-h postload, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and insulin levels were measured. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and homeostasis model analysis formulas (HOMA) for b-cell function and insulin resistance were calculated. The results showed a significant decrease in diastolic blood pressure (71.7 – 12.2 vs. 67.8 – 13.8 mmHg; P < .05) and LDL-C (3.1 – 0.5 vs. 2.7 – 0.6 mmol/l; P < .01) with increase in insulin levels (60.6 – 24.0 vs. 78.6 – 32.4 pmol/l; P < .05), HOMA b-cell (35.0 – 20.8 vs. 50.6 – 18.7; P < .05) and HOMA IR (1.9 – 1.2 vs. 2.6 – 1.8; P < .05) were observed after fucoidan administration. We conclude that fucoidan administration during a 3-month period in overweight or obese adults decreased diastolic blood pressure and LDL-C concentrations, increasing insulin secretion and insulin resistance.

The use of herbarium mixture has been empirical, and the properties are not yet known. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of oral administration of herbarium mixture (Guazuma ulmifolia [G. ulmifolia]/Tecoma stans [T. stans]) on metabolic profile in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, clinical trial was carried out in 40 patients with T2DM. They were between 40 and 65 years of age, with body mass index (BMI) between 25.0 and 34.9 kg/m2 and HbA1c >7.0%. BMI, waist circumference, fasting glucose, HbA1c, lipids, kidney, and liver function were measured. The patients were randomly assigned to receive the herbarium mixture (G. ulmifolia/T. stans) 400 mg before each meal, or placebo for 90 days. Herbarium mixture group showed decreased waist circumference (99 ± 14 vs. 98 ± 15 cm; P = .019), fasting glucose (12.0 ± 5.7 vs. 10.3 ± 5.1 mM; P = .019), and HbA1c (9.9% ± 2.7% vs. 8.9% ± 2.5%, P = .002). In conclusion, the administration of herbarium mixture (G. ulmifolia/T. stans) improved the glycemic profile in patients with T2DM. ClinicalTrial registration: NCT03313856 ClinicalTrials.gov

This paper presents the synchronization of a class of hyperchaotic systems using a robust underactuated approach. The proposed scheme guarantees the convergence in finite time of the slave system trajectories to the master system based on Lyapunov theory. The main novelty of the method is its simplicity resulting from the underactuated strategy and its robustness due to the presence of disturbances in the stability analysis. Simulations are presented to show the performance of the proposed method and its advantages compared with another recent study in the literature. In addition, a secure communication example is considered to illustrate the simple application of the synchronizer.

Background: The Gasserian ganglion is a well-known target for facial pain management, and patients with cancer present an anatomical challenge owing to tumor progression or treatment itself. Computed tomography (CT) is an alternative method for guiding these procedures. Methods: This was an observational retrospective analysis of patients with cancer-related facial pain who underwent CT-guided Gasserian ganglion interventions using local anesthetics, local anesthetics with steroids, phenol, and radiofrequency. Demographic, clinical, and procedure-related variables were collected from January 1, 2015, to December 30, 2018, at the National Cancer Institute. Data distribution was determined using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test. A paired sample t-test (with a cut-off of P < 0.05 for statistical significance) was used for comparing outcome. Results: We observed a significant reduction in numerical rating scale (NRS) and douleur neuropathique 4 (DN4) scores from 7.6 ± 1.4 and 4.4 ± 1.4 to 3.2 ± 2.0 and 2.2 ± 1.4 points, respectively (P < 0.001). After the procedure, 70.8% of the patients were satisfied; 16.7% were very satisfied, and 12.5% were unsatisfied. No intra- or postoperative complications were observed. The most common neoplasms were head and neck tumors (83.3%).Conclusions: Our data suggest that CT guidance is an effective and safe option for managing cancer-related facial pain in patients with complex anatomy, resulting in a significant reduction in pain, high satisfaction rates, and no mechanical complications. Future research should aim to refine the role of CT guidance in multimodal pain management in this population.
