        Does Leaders' Health (and Work-Related Experiences) Affect their Evaluation of Followers' Stress?

        Background: Stressed workers suffer from severe health problems which appear to have increased. Poor leadership is especially considered a source of stress. Indeed, supervisors might perceive their subordinates to be similar to them as far as stress is concerned and this might more widespread in organizations than previously thought. Methods: The present research investigates the relationships between leaders' health, in terms of work-related stress, mental health, and workplace bullying and their evaluation of subordinates' stress. Five regression models were formulated to test our hypothesis. This is a cross-sectional study among 261 Italian leaders, using supervisor self-assessment and leaders' assessments of their subordinates. Results: Leaders' health was related to their evaluation of staff stress. Job demand, lack of job control, and lack of support by colleagues and supervisors evaluated in their subordinates were particularly associated with the leaders' own health. Conclusion: Implications for developing healthy leaders are finally discussed.

        Physics-based modelling and validation of inter-granular helium behaviour in SCIANTIX

        In this work, we propose a new mechanistic model for the treatment of helium behaviour at the grain boundaries in oxide nuclear fuel. The model provides a rate-theory description of helium inter-granular behaviour, considering diffusion towards grain edges, trapping in lenticular bubbles, and thermal resolution. It is paired with a rate-theory description of helium intra-granular behaviour that includes diffusion towards grain boundaries, trapping in spherical bubbles, and thermal re-solution. The proposed model has been implemented in the meso-scale software designed for coupling with fuel performance codes SCIANTIX. It is validated against thermal desorption experiments performed on doped UO2 samples annealed at different temperatures. The overall agreement of the new model with the experimental data is improved, both in terms of integral helium release and of the helium release rate. By considering the contribution of helium at the grain boundaries in the new model, it is possible to represent the kinetics of helium release rate at high temperature. Given the uncertainties involved in the initial conditions for the inter-granular part of the model and the uncertainties associated to some model parameters for which limited lower-length scale information is available, such as the helium diffusivity at the grain boundaries, the results are complemented by a dedicated uncertainty analysis. This assessment demonstrates that the initial conditions, chosen in a reasonable range, have limited impact on the results, and confirms that it is possible to achieve satisfying results using sound values for the uncertain physical parameters.

        HS-SPME-GC/MS Analysis of the Volatile Compounds of Achillea collina: Evaluation of the Emissions Fingerprint Induced by Myzus persicae Infestation

        A Headspace Solid-phase Microextraction (HSSPME)method combined with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) was developed and optimized to extrat and analyze the volatile compounds of aerial parts of Achillea collina Becker ex Rchb. and to investigate the effect of the phlem feeding aphid Myzus persicae Sulzer on the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) emitted by the infested plants. The extraction of 1 g of powdered freeze dried plant samples for 120 min at 30oC using divinylbenzene-carbowaxpolydimethylsiloxane (DVB/CAR/PDMS) fiber showed the highest area counts for the majority of the volatile compounds. Overall, 62 and 80 volatile compounds were detected in control and infested plant samples respectively. In A. collina infested plants, we observed a great increase in both monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes fractions. Several changes among alcohols also occurred, particularly regarding Z-3-hexen-1-ol, E-3-hexen-1-ol and E-2-hexen-1-ol proposing these compounds as herbivore-induces plant volatiles (HIPVs). New perspective for agricultural practice may derive from the opportunity to identify novel herbivores-induced plant VOCs active as plant protection agents.

        Some considerations about fatigue failure in milled butt-welded joints affected by residual stress

        Many factors are involved in determining the fatigue strength of welded joints. It is, however, very difficult to consider their relative importance. The aim of this paper is to isolate the effect of residual stress from other factors, establishing a relation between the amount of residual stress and fatigue life. A geometrical notch due to the weld bead is removed by milling the upper surface of the welded plates. Moreover, specimens are subjected to four-point bend loading. Before conducting the fatigue test, the magnitude of residual stress for each specimen is experimentally evaluated, and then linked to the number of cycles to failure. This relation is analyzed for three different plate thicknesses and for different stress amplitude levels in the high cycle regime. The results clearly show the significant influence of residual stress on fatigue behaviours when the load level is near the fatigue limit.

        Effect of shoulder geometry on residual stress and fatigue properties of AA6082 fsw joints

        The tool geometry is a crucial characteristic of the friction stir welding (FSW) process; its design is the key to the successful FSW application for a wide range of materials and thicknesses improving the weld strength and fatigue life. The present study investigates the influence of three shoulder geometries on the FSW joint performance, in terms of residual stresses state, microhardness profile and mechanical properties of 1.5 mm thick AA 6082-T6 FSW joints in the butt-joint configuration. The three tool geometries are characterized by three different shoulders: a shoulder with scroll, a shoulder with a shallow cavity, and a flat shoulder. Transverse and longitudinal tensile tests at room temperature were performed in order to evaluate the mechanical properties, respectively, of the joints and of the stirred zone, while the fatigue tests were performed transversally to the joint line.

        Effect of Breed (Lean or Fat Pigs) and Sex on Performance and Feeding Behaviour of Group Housed Growing Pigs in a Tropical Climate

        The effects of breed and sex on individual growth performance and feeding behaviour were studied between 45 and 90 kg BW in two replicates of forty group-housed pigs. The first and the second replicates were carried out during the warm season (i.e. between February and April 2003) and during the hot season (i.e. between August and October 2003), respectively. During the warm season, ambient temperature and relative humidity averaged $25.3^{\circ}C$ and 86.0%. The corresponding values for the hot season were $27.9^{\circ}C$ and 83.6%. The pigs were grouped in pens of 10 animals on the basis of breed (Creole or Large White) and sex (gilt or castrated male) and given ad libitum access to a grower diet (9.0 MJ/kg net energy and 158 g/kg crude protein) via feed intake recording equipment (Acema 48). An ear-tag transponder was inserted into each pig and this allowed the time, duration, and size of individual visits to be recorded. The growth performance and feeding pattern were significantly affected by breed, sex, and season. The Creole pigs (CR) had a lower average daily gain (ADG) (642 vs. 861 g/d, p<0.01) and carcass lean content ($LC_{90kg}$) (35.4 vs. 54.5%; p<0.01) and a higher backfat thickness at 90 kg BW ($BT_{90kg}$) (23.4 vs. 10.4 mm; p<0.01) than Large White pigs (LW) whereas the average daily feed intake (ADFI) was not affected by breed (2.34 vs. 2.22 kg/d, respectively for CR and LW pigs; p>0.10). Consequently, the food:gain ratio was higher in CR than in LW (3.65 vs. 2.58; p<0.01). CR had less frequent meals but ate more feed per meal than LW (5.9 vs. 8.8 meals/d and 431 vs. 279 g/meal; p<0.01). The rate of feed intake was lower (27.6 vs. 33.9 g/min; p<0.01) and the ingestion time per day and per meal were higher in CR than in LW (87.1 vs. 69.7 min/d and 15.8 vs. 8.4 min/meal; p<0.01). The ADFI and BT90 kg were higher (2.38 vs. 2.17 kg/d and 18.1 vs. 15.9 mm; p<0.05) and LC90 kg was lower (43.5 vs. 46.4%; p<0.01) in castrated males (CM) than in gilts (G) whereas ADG was not affected by sex (p = 0.12). The difference in lean content between CM and G was greater in CR than in LW. The ADFI and ADG were reduced during the hot season (2.18 vs.2.38 kg/d and 726 vs. 777 g/d, respectively; p<0.05) whereas feed conversion and carcass lean content were not affected by season (p>0.05). Average feeding time per meal and meal size decreased during the hot season (10.9 vs. 13.2 min/meal and 316 vs. 396 g/meal; p<0.01) whereas the rate of feed intake was not affected by season (p = 0.83). On average, 0.69 of total feed intake was consumed during the diurnal period. However, this partition of feed intake was significantly affected by breed, sex, and season. In conclusion, the breed, sex and season significantly affect performance and feeding pattern in growing pigs raised in a tropical climate. Moreover, the results obtained in the present study suggest that differences observed in BW composition between CR and LW are associated with difference in feeding behaviour, in particular, the short-term regulation of feed intake.

        Initial Experience of Endoscopic Thyroidectomy Using Bilateral Axillary Breast and Transoral Vestibular Approach in Georgia

        Purpose:Remote access thyroid surgery using a bilateral axillary breast approach (BABA) or a transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) are increasingly performed worldwide. In the Caucasus, these methods were first applied in the Republic of Georgia. This study compares these two methods of endoscopic thyroid surgery performed on patients in a tertiary hospital in Tbilisi, Georgia. Methods: Between December 2015 and January 2018, 41 patients underwent endoscopic thyroid surgery at the Aversi Clinic, including 32 who underwent BABA endoscopic thyroidectomy for benign nodules and nine who underwent TOETVA for thyroid cancers. Patients’ medical records were retrospectively reviewed. Results: Tumors were significantly larger (2.38±0.38cm versus 1.70±0.31cm, p-value < 0.001), operation time was significantly longer (177.66±21.02 min versus 116.66±5.59 min, p-value < 0.001), and blood loss was significantly greater (149.07±28.10 ml versus 102.22±8.33 ml, p-value < 0.001) in patients who underwent BABA than TOETVA. There were no significant difference in postoperative complications between the two groups. Conclusions: Remote access thyroid surgery, either BABA or TOETVA, was successfully started, without harmful complications, at the Aversi Clinic in Tbilisi, Georgia. BABA is suitable for large sized benign nodules and TOETVA for thyroid cancers with central lymph node dissection.
