Revitalizing Philippine Theater: A Framework for Theater as Creative Entrepreneurship
Gian Carlo U. de Jesus(Gian Carlo U. de Jesus ),Ana Katrina P. de Jesus(Ana Katrina P. de Jesus ) 아시아무역학회 2023 Journal of Asia Trade and Business Vol.10 No.1
Purpose – Despite the rich culture of the Philippines, the country has not been able to create products, services, and experiences that sustainably cater to domestic and international markets. Instead of harnessing its creative force to drive economic growth, it remains a creative labor supplier. The country is envisioned to become “a major creative hub in the Asia-Pacific, with strong and thriving creative industries” (British Council, 2017). Performing arts, including theater, is a key creative industries sector. However, theater is beset with precarity and instability (Santiago, 2021). This study sought to analyze the challenges and opportunities for revitalizing theater as an industry. Design/Methodology/Approach – In this investigation, a critical review was employed. This methodology not only describes the phenomena, but also formulates a re-conceptualization based on an integrative review of old and current models. A comparative analysis of creative economy models was made between Philippine theater and theaters internationally. Findings – Philippine theater is not fully utilizing its economic potential because current models involve high production costs, need for highly specialized creative labor, and lack of enabling policies. Among the four creative economy models (Potts and Cunningham, 2010), Philippine theater may benefit from Model 3, the Innovation Model, which may evolve into Model 4. Mapping representative theater companies and genres across the models provides insights into directions for theater innovations. A conceptual framework for innovating Philippine theater through Creative Entrepreneurship is forwarded. Research Implications – The framework yields valuable insights for theater managers, educators, heritage and cultural advocates, tourism creatives, and entrepreneurs.
Time-Dependent Analysis of Precast Segmental Bridges
Gian Felice Giaccu,Davide Solinas,Bruno Briseghella,Luigi Fenu 한국콘크리트학회 2021 International Journal of Concrete Structures and M Vol.15 No.2
Prestressed segmentally constructed balanced cantilever bridges are often subjected to larger deflections than those predicted by calculations, especially for long-term effects. In this paper, the case of modular balanced cantilever bridges, which are prestressed segmental bridges obtained through a repetition of the same double cantilever, is investigated. The considered bridges are two typical cases of modular balanced cantilever both subjected to large deformations during their lifetime. In this case, due to the unusual employed static scheme, creep deflections indefinitely evolve over time particularly at the end of the cantilevers and in correspondence with the central joint. These remarkable deflections cause discomfort for vehicular traffic and in certain cases can lead to the bridge collapse. Important extraordinary maintenance interventions were necessary to restore the viability of the bridges and to replace the viaduct design configuration. To this aim, the static schemes of the structures were varied, introducing new constraints, new tendons, and carbon fiber reinforcements. In the present work, time analysis was performed to compare the time-dependent behavior of the bridge according to two different creep models, the CEB-FIP Model Code 2010 and the RILEM Model B3, with the real-time-dependent behavior of the bridge observed during its lifetime. The two different employed models exhibit different behaviors in terms of displacements and bending moments acting on the bridge. Interesting considerations are made on their reliability in simulating the long-term creep effects that evolve indefinitely over time. Moreover, retrofitting techniques have been proposed and modeled to predict their effectiveness in reducing time-dependent deflections.

Background: Pulmonary involvement in leptospirosis is associated with rapid clinical deterioration and high mortality. The role of steroids in treating the immunologically-mediated pulmonary insult in leptospirosis has been described in anecdotal reports. Objectives: To investigate the effect of steroids as adjunct to standard care in reducing mortality, the need for and the duration of mechanical ventilation among leptospirosis patients with pulmonary manifestations. Methods: Authors included all available randomized and nonrandomized studies on patients with pulmonary manifestations, who were given steroids of any type in addition to standard care. The primary outcome was mortality rate. The secondary outcomes were duration of hospital stay, adverse effects of steroids, and number of days requiring mechanical ventilation. Three reviewers did trial selection and assessed methodologic quality of randomized studies using the Cochrane Collaboration Criteria and the Downs and Black Tool. Data were extracted independently by three reviewers, and were analysed using Review Manager Version 5. Heterogeneity was determined by chi square and I2 test. Results: Of thirteen studies initially identifi ed, fi ve passed the selection criteria however one was excluded for lack of full data on Results: The studies included were 3 prospective cohorts and 1 randomized controlled trial comparing steroids (methylprednisolone, dexamethasone) in addition to standard care versus standard care alone on adult patients with pulmonary manifestations of leptospirosis. Pooled data from nonrandomized studies show that methylprednisolone or dexamethasone decreased mortality among patients with pulmonary leptospirosis (OR 0.20 95% CI 0.09-0.45, chi2=0.44, I2=0%, df=2, p=0.80). The randomized controlled trial showed no mortality benefi t with the addition of dexamethasone to standard care. Conclusions: Data from nonrandomized studies suggest a mortality benefi t. Randomized trials are needed to strengthen the evidence on the effectiveness of steroids in decreasing mortality as well as to identify all relevant outcomes including adverse effects of steroids.

Background Imatinib mesylate is an inhibitor of the tyrosine kinase Bcr–Abl and a first-line treatment for Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). Dermatological side effects include superficial oedema, pustular eruption, lichenoid reactions, erythroderma, and skin rash. Depigmentation of the skin and/or mucosa is uncommon, and hyperpigmentation is rare. Case presentation We present the case of a 63-year-old Caucasian male with widespread hyperpigmentation of the hard palate associated with a 9-year history of imatinib therapy to treat CML. He did not complain of any symptoms. Clinical examination did not reveal any abnormal pigmentation of the skin or other region of the oral mucosa. He did not smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol. His medication regimen was a proton pump inhibitor, a beta-blocker, cardioaspirin, atorvastatin, and imatinib 400 mg/day. Histopathologically, melanin and haemosiderin deposits were evident in the lamina propria. The lesion persisted, with no clinical change, through several follow-ups. We reviewed the literature to explore the possible relationship between oral hyperpigmentation and long-term imatinib mesylate treatment. Conclusions We diagnosed oral pigmentation associated with imatinib intake based on the medical history and clinical features of the pigmented macules. Oral pigmentation may have a variety of causes, and differential diagnosis requires nodal analysis. Clinicians should be aware of possible oral mucosal hyperpigmentation in patients taking imatinib mesylate. Such pigmentation is benign and no treatment is needed, but surveillance is advisable.
