Laparoscopic repair of parastomal and incisional hernias with a modified Sugarbaker technique

        Duck Hyoun Jeong,Min Geun Park1,George Melich2,Hyuk Hur,Byung Soh Min,Seung Hyuk Baik,Nam Kyu Kim 대한외과학회 2013 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.84 No.6

A parastomal hernia is the most common surgical complication following stoma formation. As the field of laparoscopic surgery advances, different laparoscopic approaches to repair of parastomal hernias have been developed. Recently, the Sugarbaker technique has been reported to have lower recurrence rates compared to keyhole techniques. As far as we know, the Sugarbaker technique has not yet been performed in Korea. We herein present a case report of perhaps the first laparoscopic parastomal hernia repair with a modified Sugarbaker technique to be successfully carried out in Korea. A 79-year-old woman, who underwent an abdominoperineal resection for an adenocarcinoma of the rectum 9 years ago, presented with a large parastomal and incisional hernias, and was treated with a laparoscopic repair with a modified Sugarbaker technique. Six months after surgery, follow-up with the patient has shown no evidence of recurrence.

      • Moving Forward in Space Plasma Physics

        Parks, George K. 한국우주과학회 2009 한국우주과학회보 Vol.18 No.2

Space physics is more than fifty years old and is going through middle age. Looking back and thinking about what has been learned during the past fifty years, one finds that progress was made at the expense of exactness. Past observations have been interp

Petrogenesis of basalts along the eastern Woodlark spreading center, equatorial western Pacific

        Park, Sung-Hyun,Michael, Peter J.,Kamenov, George D.,Lee, Sang-Mook,Hauff, Folkmar,Lee, Kyeong Yong Elsevier 2018 Lithos Vol.316 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Seafloor spreading in the Woodlark Basin is taking place on pre-existing arc crust that was produced by the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate into the Pocklington Trough (now inactive) to the south during the Paleogene. The Woodlark Basin has a unique tectonic setting characterized by two surrounding subduction zones. To the east, a spreading ridge is also currently being subducted beneath the Solomon Arc. Moreover, long-term subduction of the Pacific Plate occurred in this area, which was halted by the collision of the Ontong–Java Plateau with the Vitiaz Trench at ca. 10 Ma. Any one of these subduction zones could have influenced the mantle beneath the Woodlark Basin. In this study, basalts from the eastern Woodlark Basin spreading center (EWLB; eastern Woodlark Basin basalts) were analyzed for major and trace element compositions and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic compositions to investigate the melting processes and mantle heterogeneity in this unusual tectonic setting. Our results show that the EWLB can be classified into three types based on major and trace elements, and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic characteristics: normal EWLB (N-EWLB), very depleted EWLB (VD-EWLB), and ultra-depleted EWLB (UD-EWLB). N-EWLB are similar to normal mid-ocean ridge basalts (N-MORB) and comprise most of the EWLB. The EWLB formed from local mantle, which is similar to depleted MORB mantle. VD-EWLB are more depleted than N-EWLB and have a weak subduction fingerprint. These rocks are characterized by increasing Nb/La with increasing Sm/La, which is a trend that is not produced by peridotite melting. As such, VD-EWLB may have formed by melting of a source containing residual eclogite that had previously undergone low-degree partial melting during subduction, leaving residual rutile in the source. UD-EWLB are extremely depleted relative to global MORB, have elevated H2O/Ce and Ba/Nb ratios similar to back-arc basin basalts (BABB), and lower concentrations of H2O and Ba than N-MORB. We propose that UD-EWLB was derived from sub-arc residual mantle that was enriched by fluid and then experienced melt depletion. The subduction fingerprints in the VD- and UD-EWLB are not related to the current ridge subduction or earlier, long-term subduction of the Pacific Plate in the northeast of the basin, as they are geochemically distinct from the Solomon Arc, which was strongly influenced by both these subduction systems. Instead, we suggest that the subduction fingerprint of the VD- and UD-EWLB was produced during Paleogene subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate to the south.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Petrogenesis of highly-depleted basalt </LI> <LI> Subarc residual mantle and flux melting beneath an arc or back-arc environment </LI> <LI> Residual eclogite and partial melting of subducted altered oceanic crust. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Suppression of A549 lung cancer cell migration by precursor let-7g microRNA.

        Park, Sungjin,Minai-Tehrani, Arash,Xu, Cheng-Xiong,Chang, Seung-Hee,Woo, Min-Ah,Noh, Mi-Suk,Lee, Eun-Sun,Lim, Hwang-Tae,An, Gil-Hwan,Lee, Kee-Ho,Sung, Ha-Jung,Beck, George R,Cho, Myung-Haing D. A. Spandidos 2010 MOLECULAR MEDICINE REPORTS Vol.3 No.6

<P>Let-7g miRNAs, short non-coding RNAs approximately 21 nucleotides long, repress protein translation by binding to the 3'UTR of target mRNAs. Aberrant expression of let-7g is associated with the poor prognosis of lung cancer patients. Compared to normal lung cells, let-7g expression is absent in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. Furthermore, K-Ras and HMGA2 are well known as targets of let-7g. In this study, we evaluated the potential role of precursor (pre)-let-7g in lung cancer cell metastasis, focusing on the two targets of let-7g, HMGA2 and K-Ras. We found that pre-let-7g inhibited the migration of A549 lung cancer cells through HMGA2-mediated E2F1 down-regulation. Thus, our results suggest that pre-let-7g could be used as a suitable target for the suppression of lung cancer cell migration.</P>

Heme Oxygenase-1 Expression in Murine Dendritic Cell Subpopulations

Park, D.J.,Agarwal, A.,George, J.F. American Association of Pathologists and Bacteriol 2010 The American journal of pathology Vol.176 No.6

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is a microsomal enzyme with antioxidant, antiapoptotic, and immunoregulatory functions. We studied the expression of HO-1 by bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) and splenic DC subpopulations under quiescent conditions or following lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation. The kinetics of HO-1 expression by BMDCs depended on the conditions under which they were propagated. Expression of HO-1 in mouse BMDCs in 100 U/ml GM-CSF peaked at 16 hours after LPS treatment and maintained expression for at least 48 hours. But cultures in 800 U/ml granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) showed peak expression by 16 hours that disappeared by 48 hours after LPS stimulation, similar to BMDCs cultured in both 100 U/ml GM-CSF and IL-4 (10 ng/ml). By flow cytometry, a large proportion of CD8+ splenic DCs strongly expressed HO-1, and this population significantly increased following LPS administration in vivo. In HO-1-/- mice, the proportion of splenic CD8+ DCs was significantly decreased in comparison with HO-1+/+ mice. In addition, a unique subpopulation of MHC II-CD11b+CD11c+ cells was prominent in HO-1-/- spleens. Injection of GFP-labeled HO-1+/+ splenic DC precursors into HO-1+/+ mice resulted in the generation of GFP+CD8+ DCs in the spleen after 5 days, but GFP+ CD8+ DCs failed to appear in HO-1-/- spleens. Conversely, GFP+HO-1-/- splenic cells also generated GFP+CD8+ DCs in HO-1+/+ mice. These results show that HO-1 is involved in splenic DC differentiation, and/or the homing of CD8+ splenic DC precursors appears to be dependent on HO-1 expression by the host.

National Culture and Relational Selling: Antecedents, Outcomes and Boundary Conditions of ASB and Customer-Oriented Selling in Korea

Park, Jeong Eun,Deitz, George D. Korean Marketing Association 2016 ASIA MARKETING JOURNAL Vol.18 No.1

Globalization and the emergence of new markets has placed increased emphasis on cross-cultural sales and marketing research. Despite considerable advances in the personal selling literature, little is known about the cross-cultural transferability of key constructs. Given the degree to which well-accepted relational sales behaviors such as ASB and customer oriented selling reflect Western values such as individualism and low uncertainty avoidance, the relative efficacy of such practices in alternative cultural context is less clear. Using a Korean sample, our results confirm the beneficial direct effects of these relational selling practices upon performance. However, we also find strong workgroup interdependence diminishes the effects of ASB and that performance fully mediates the relationship between both sales behaviors and job satisfaction. In contrast to prior results, we find female salespeople and those newer to their position demonstrate stronger ASB.

      • Synthesis and structure of novel strontium complexes of unsymmetrically functionalized β-diketimine ligands

        George, S.M.,Yon, G.H.,Park, B.K.,Lee, K.M.,Do, Y.,Kim, C.G.,Chung, T.M. Elsevier Sequoia [etc.] 2012 Inorganica chimica acta Vol.383 No.-

A series of tridentate β-diketiminate ligands, (2Z,4E)-4-{[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]imino}-N-(propan-2-yl)pent-2-en-2-amine (L1H), (2Z,4E)-4-{[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]imino}-N-(tert-butyl)pent-2-en-2-amine (L2H), and (2Z,4E)-4-{[3-(dimethyl-amino)propyl]imino}-N-(propan-2-yl)pent-2-en-2-amine (L3H), and their strontium complexes, SrL21 (1), SrL22 (2), and SrL23 (3) were synthesized as potential strontium precursors, by the reaction of Sr[N(SiMe3)2]2 and two equivalents of L1H, L2H, and L3H, respectively. Compounds 1-3 were characterized by spectroscopic (IR, MS, 1H and 13C NMR), microanalytical methods, and single crystal X-ray diffractometry. The X-ray crystal structure reveals that complex 1 has a monoclinic space group, C2/c. The structure shows the bonding of two β-diketiminate ligands to the strontium metal through six nitrogen atoms. Additionally, the isopropyl groups on the ligands force 1 to attain a highly distorted octahedron. Thermogravimetric analyses of the compounds 1-3 exhibit a primary mass loss on 130-300oC region.
