Development and validation of a HPLC method for the determination of benzo(a)pyrene in human breast milk

Isil Gazioglu,Serife Evrim Kepekci Tekkeli 한국식품과학회 2017 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.26 No.2

A simple analytical procedure was developed for the quantitation of benzo(a)pyrene in human breast milk using solid phase extraction (SPE) combined with high performance liquid chromatography. Before the chromatographic process, SPE, including C18 functional groups in silicagel cartridges, was conducted for sample preparation. A C18 column (100×4.6 mm id, 3 μm particle size) was used with acetonitrile:water (80:20) as the mobile phase at a flow rate 1mL/min at 30oC. Fluorimetric detection was performed for excitation and emission at 290 and 406 nm, respectively. It was observed that the calibration curve was linear over the range of 0.5–80 ng/mL. The limit of detection and limit of quantitation were found to be 0.5 and 1.07 ng/mL, respectively. Intraday and interday relative standard deviation values were less than 5.15%. Moreover, the newly developed method provides a fast, simple, cost effective, and sensitive assay to detect an important carcinogen substance, benzo(a)pyrene, in human breast milk.

Coping with Intersecting Vulnerabilities: Syrian Refugee Women Working in Textile Workshops in Istanbul

Elif Gazioglu Terzi,Hatun Korkmaz 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2022 Asian Women Vol.38 No.4

This study focuses on the intersecting vulnerabilities of Syrian women refugee workers in Istanbul and the practices they have developed and employed to cope with them. In the particular case of women refugee workers, the intersection of gender, labor, and refugee status creates overlapping vulnerabilities that invoke an understanding of the multidimensionality of women’s adverse experiences and coping practices. Thus, an exploratory research design was adopted to investigate how and to what extent the intersecting content of vulnerabilities is reflected in the coping practices of women refugee workers. In 2011, Turkey opened its doors to Syrian refugees fleeing the war in their country. However, with high unemployment rates and the prevalence of informal work, the situation Turkey offers refugees is far from an ideal employment context and can have devastating effects, particularly on women refugee workers. It is well known that they earn less than the minimum wage, work very long hours, and are exposed to ill treatment in the workplace. However, the ways in which they cope with these issues remain a mystery. To understand this, we used a qualitative method to collect data. We conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 13 Syrian women working in textile workshops in the Zeytinburnu District of Istanbul. A feminist intersectional approach informed the content of this research. The findings show how intersecting vulnerabilities experienced by women refugee workers directly and greatly affect their coping practices. The findings further reveal that women refugee workers’ coping practices also have an intersectional content.

Evaluation of Temperament and Character Features as Risk Factors for Depressive Symptoms in Patients with Restless Legs Syndrome

        Vildan Altunayoglu Cakmak,Sibel Gazioglu,Nuray Can Usta,Ahmet Ayar,Murat Topbas,Cavit Boz,Evrim Ozkorumak 대한신경과학회 2014 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.10 No.4

Background and Purpose Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common sleep-related movement disorder that is frequently associated with psychological disturbances. Personality traitsare of considerable importance with respect to coping with chronic illness and disease vulnerability. This study assessed the temperament and character traits of RLS patients using an approach that involves the psychobiological model of personality. Methods The personality features of 65 newly diagnosed and untreated RLS patients with noneurological or psychiatric diseases and 109 healthy controls were determined using the Temperament and Character Inventory and compared using covariance analyses. The InternationalRLS Study Group Severity Scale was used to assess the severity of the RLS symptoms, and theBeck Depression Inventory was used to assess the presence and severity of depressive symptoms. Results RLS patients scored significantly higher than healthy controls on the temperamentdimension of harm avoidance (HA, p=0.02) and significantly lower on self-directedness (SD,p=0.001). No significant difference was observed in terms of the temperament dimension ofnovelty seeking (p=0.435). HA scores were significantly correlated with the BDI score but notwith the RLS severity or duration. Conclusions High HA and low SD scores are the main characterizing personality features ofRLS patients. These personality dimensions may be among the factors predisposing patients todevelopment of the depressive symptoms that are frequently associated with RLS.
