In this study, a mathematical model for flow with silt protector is proposed that adds a second-order energy loss term in the momentum equation. The three-dimensional numerical model was developed based on mathematical models and verified through comparison with flume test results. Loss coefficients were evaluated through the flume tests and applied to the numerical model. It was found through the investigation of various example cases that the downstream flow pattern was affected mainly by penetration of the silt curtain, not by the approach velocity, and also that the blocking effect of velocity was increased by the increase in mesh density of the silt curtain, below a certain mesh density. The blocking effect did not increase further above a certain mesh density.

The present study describes the ameliorating effect of $Ca^{++}\;on\;Cd^{++}$ toxicity on the germination, early growth of mungbean seedlings, nitrogen assimilation enzyme. s-nitrate reductase (NR), nitrite reductase (NIR), anti-oxidant enzymes (POD, CAT and SOD) and on the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide and sulphydryls. $Cd^{++}$ inhibited seed germination and root and shoot length of seedlings. While NR activity was down- regulated, the activities of NIR, POD and SOD were up- regulated with $Cd^{++}$ treatment. $Cd^{++}$ treatment also increased the accumulation of sulphydryls and peroxides, which is reflective of increased thiol rich proteins and oxidative stress. $Ca^{++}$ reversed the toxic effects of $Cd^{++}$ on germination and on early growth of seedlings as well as on the enzyme activities, which were in turn differentially inhibited with a combined treatment with calcium specific chelator EGTA. The results indicate that the external application of $Ca^{++}$ may increase the tolerance capacity of plants to environmental pollutants by both up and down regulating metabolic activities. Sri Lanka, together with the Western Ghats, is one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, yet little is known about the genetic diversity of the butterflies here. Within the framework of the recently reconstructed molecular phylogeny for the subtribe Mycalesina, we determined the phylogenetic relationships and biogeographic history of the five species of Mycalesis butterflies that are found in Sri Lanka. Sequences of Elongation Factor 1-α (EF1-α), Wingless (Wgl) and the barcode region of the Cytochrome c Oxidase sub unit 1 (COI) were used to confirm the identity of species, to resolve taxonomic queries and to infer the phylogenetic history of the group. Time-calibrated analysis of genetic data suggests that the Mycalesis species that occur in Sri Lanka diverged in the Miocene (5–23 million years ago). The results of phylogenetic analyses confirmed the following; the endemicity of Mycalesis rama to Sri Lanka; the subspecies classification of M. perseus typhlus and, the close sister relationship of the Sri Lankan M. patnia patnia to M. p. junonia of India. However, whether or not M. subdita of Sri Lanka and India are genetically similar remains unknown. Lastly, genetic evidence emerged suggesting that M. mineus forms a cryptic species complex in the Oriental region, and that in Sri Lanka, there may be occasional hybridization between M. mineus and M. perseus. As a case study of island colonization and diversification by the Mycalesis species, this study further extends our understanding of the Old World butterfly subtribe of Mycalesina.

Background: Despite current matching efforts to identify optimal donor-recipient pairs for kidney transplantation, alloimmunity remains a major source of late transplant failure. Additional genetic parameters in donor-recipient matching could help improve long-term outcomes. Here, we studied the impact of a non-muscle myosin heavy chain 9 gene (MYH9) polymorphism on allograft failure. Methods: We conducted an observational cohort study, analyzing the DNA of 1,271 kidney donor-recipient transplant pairs from a single academic hospital for the MYH9 rs11089788 C>A polymorphism. The associations of the MYH9 genotype with risk of graft failure, biopsy-proven acute rejection (BPAR), and delayed graft function (DGF) were estimated. Results: A trend was seen in the association between the MYH9 polymorphism in the recipient and graft failure (recessive model, p = 0.056), but not for the MYH9 polymorphism in the donor. The AA-genotype MYH9 polymorphism in recipients was associated with higher risk of DGF (p = 0.03) and BPAR (p = 0.021), although significance was lost after adjusting for covariates (p = 0.15 and p = 0.10, respectively). The combined presence of the MYH9 polymorphism in donor-recipient pairs was associated with poor long-term kidney allograft survival (p = 0.04), in which recipients with an AA genotype receiving a graft with an AA genotype had the worst outcomes. After adjustment, this combined genotype remained significantly associated with 15-year death-censored kidney graft survival (hazard ratio, 1.68; 95% confidence interval, 1.05-2.70; p = 0.03). Conclusion: Our results reveal that recipients with an AA-genotype MYH9 polymorphism receiving a donor kidney with an AA genotype have significantly elevated risk of graft failure after kidney transplantation.

The present study describes the genotypic distribution of rotaviruses (RVs) in an Indian bovine population with unexpectedly higher proportions of G3 alone or in combination of G8/G10. PCR-genotyping confirmed that 39.4% (13/33) of the prevalent RVs were the G3 type while 60.6% (20/33) were dual G3G10 or G3G8 types. P typing revealed that 93.9% (31/33) of the samples were P[11] while 6.1% (2/33) possessed a dual P[1]P[11] type. Sequence analysis of the VP7 gene from G3 strains viz. B-46, 0970, and BR-133 showed that these strains had sequence identities of 90.5% to 100% with other bovine G3 strains. The highest identity (98.9% to 100%) was observed with RUBV3 bovine G3 strains from eastern India. The G3 strains (B-46, 0970, and BR-133) showed 97.5% to 98.8% sequence homologies with the Indian equine RV strain Erv-80. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that G3 strains clustered with bovine RUBV3 and J-63, and equine Erv-80 G3. Overall, these results confirmed that the incidence of infection by RVs with the G3 genotype and mixed genotypes in the bovine population was higher than previously predicted. This finding reinforces the importance of constantly monitoring circulating viral strains with the G3 genotype in future surveillance studies.
