Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the flow field development through T99 draft tube caused by optimized inlet velocity profiles.

Sergio Galván,Marcelo Reggio,François Guibault,Gildardo Solorio 한국유체기계학회 2015 International journal of fluid machinery and syste Vol.8 No.4

The effect of the inlet swirling flow in a hydraulic turbine draft tube is a very complex phenomenon, which has been extensively investigated both theoretically and experimentally. In fact, the finding of the optimal flow distribution at the draft tube inlet in order to get the best performance has remained a challenge. Thus, attempting to answer this question, it was assumed that through an automatic optimization process a Genetic Algorithm would be able to manage a parameterized inlet velocity profile in order to achieve the best flow field for a particular draft tube. As a result of the optimization process, it was possible to obtain different draft-tube flow structures generated by the automatic manipulation of parameterized inlet velocity profiles. Thus, this work develops a qualitative and quantitative analysis of these new draft tube flow field structures provoked by the redesigned inlet velocity profiles. The comparisons among the different flow fields obtained clearly illustrate the importance of the flow uniformity at the end of the conduit. Another important aspect has been the elimination of the re-circulating flow area which used to promote an adverse pressure gradient in the cone, deteriorating the pressure recovery effect. Thanks to the evolutionary optimization strategy, it has been possible to demonstrate that the optimized inlet velocity profile can suppress or mitigate, at least numerically, the undesirable draft tube flow characteristics. Finally, since there is only a single swirl number for which the objective function has been minimized, the energy loss factor might be slightly affected by the flow rate if the same relation of the axial-tangential velocity components is maintained, which makes it possible to scale the inlet velocity field to different operating points.

Analysis of virulence traits of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bovine mastitis in semi-intensive and family dairy farms

        Jaquelina J. Guzmán-Rodríguez,Ma. Fabiola León-Galván,José E. Barboza-Corona,Mauricio Valencia-Posadas,Pedro D. Loeza-Lara,Mónica Sánchez-Ceja,Alejandra Ochoa-Zarzosa,Joel E. López-Meza,Abner J. Gutié 대한수의학회 2020 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.21 No.5

Background: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the main microorganisms that causes bovine mastitis, and its well-known virulence characteristics and interactions with the environment are used to aid the design of more efficient therapies. Objectives: To determine whether the virulence traits, such as antibiotic resistance and biofilm-forming and internalization abilities, of S. aureus isolated from bovine mastitis are related to dairy production system types. Methods: The study was performed in the Mexican states of Guanajuato and Michoacan. Semi-intensive dairy farms (SIDFs) and family dairy farms (FDFs) (454 and 363 cows, respectively) were included. The 194 milk samples from mastitis affected quarters were collected and 92 strains of S. aureus were isolated and identified by biochemical and molecular tests. Antibiotic resistance, biofilm and internalization assays were performed on 30 randomly selected isolated strains to determine virulence traits, and these strains were equally allocated to the 2 dairy production systems. Results: All 30 selected strains displayed a high degree of resistance (50%–91.7%) to the antibiotics tested, but no significant difference was found between SIDF and FDF isolates. S. aureus strains from SIDFs had an average biofilm forming capacity of up to 36% (18.9%–53.1%), while S. aureus strains from FDFs registered an average of up to 53% (31.5%–77.8%) (p > 0.05). Internalization assays revealed a higher frequency of internalization capacity for strains isolated from FDFs (33.3%) than for those isolated from SIDFs (6.7%) (p > 0.05). fnbpA gen was detected in 46.6% of FDF strains and 33.3% of SIDF strains, and this difference was significant (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Our findings show that the virulence traits of S. aureus isolates analyzed in this study, depend significantly on several factors, such as phenotype, genotype, and environmental conditions, which are significantly related to dairy production system type and daily management practices.

Interpreting beyond words: The impact of nonverbal communication on healthcare interpreting standards

        ( Bruno Echauri Galván ) 이화여자대학교 통역번역연구소 2020 T&I review Vol.10 No.1

The present paper seeks to underscore the importance of nonverbal cues in the interpreting processes occurring in healthcare settings and to investigate how these are addressed in a sample of guidelines for actual practice. Given the relevance of nonverbal elements in most types of oral communication and the significance of language, paralanguage, and kinesics in face-to-face mediated interactions, it is necessary for interpreters to have or gain solid knowledge on nonverbal cues so that they can be capable of identifying and handling them effectively. In this vein, both medical interpreting standards and working with interpreters’ guidelines tend to address several issues intrinsically related to nonverbal language. However, it is still difficult to find a specific and detailed section that strictly focuses on the relevance of nonverbal communication in these sorts of interactions. In order to delve into the latter assertion, this paper conducts a comparative analysis of different manuals on healthcare interpreting that encompasses several phases: studying their approach to a series of specific nonverbal cues, pinpointing their strengths and weaknesses in this regard, expanding on those aspects that need further exploration, and finally, laying out a list of suggestions that may help improve interpreters’ overall performance in healthcare settings by honing their skills for dealing with nonverbal language.

María de la Luz Galván-Ramírez,Ana Luisa Madriz-Elisondo,Jorge de Jesús Romero Rameño,Dania Araceli de la O Carrasco,Marco Antonio Cardona López,Cynthia Guadalupe Temores Ramírez 질병관리본부 2019 Osong Public Health and Research Persptectives Vol.10 No.1

Objectives: To determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with intestinal parasites in the population of San Juan Cosala, Jalisco, Mexico. Methods: A total of 277 samples from 104 participants were analysed using direct smear, flotation, formaldehyde/ethyl acetate, and modified Kinyoun’s acid-fast stain methods. The Graham method was applied only for samples from children under 12 years of age for the diagnosis of Enterobius vermicularis. Results: The prevalence of parasite infections in the study population was 77.9% including: Entamoeba histolytica/E. dispar/E. moshkovskii/E. bangladeshi (37.5%), Giardia intestinalis (11.5%); commensals: Endolimax nana (44.2%), Entamoeba coli (27.9%), Chilomastix mesnili (6.7%) and Iodamoeba bütschlii, (2.9%); emerging intestinal protozoans: Blastocystis spp. (49%), Cryptosporidium spp. (7.7%) and Cyclospora cayetanensis (2.9%); and helminths: Enterobius vermicularis (18.3%) and Ascaris lumbricoides (5.8%). The results also showed that 58.64% of the studied population presented polyparasitism. A significant association was found between protozoan infections and housewives, and houses that were not built with concrete ceilings, brick walls and cement floors (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Polyparasitism was observed in over half the study population. The most prevalent parasite was Blastocystis spp, whilst the prevalence of helminths was less than that of protozoans. The risk factors for infection to intestinal parasites were being a housewife and not having solid brick, cement and concrete materials for house construction.

An Advanced Understanding of Uterine Microbial Ecology Associated with Metritis in Dairy Cows

        전수진,Klibs N. Galvão 한국유전체학회 2018 Genomics & informatics Vol.16 No.4

Metritis, the inflammation of the uterus caused by polymicrobial infections, is a prevalent and costly disease to the dairy industry as it decreases milk yield, survival, and the welfare of dairy cows. Although the antibiotic ceftiofur is widely used for the treatment of metritis, endometrium and ovary function is compromised, resulting in subfertility and infertility. According to culture-dependent studies, uterine pathogens include Escherichia coli, Trueperella pyogenes, Fusobacterium necrophorum, and Prevotella melaninogenica. Recent studies using high-throughput sequencing claimed that metritis is a microbiota-associated disease. Herein, we propose that metritis is associated with uterine microbiota with high abundance of Bacteroides, Porphyromonas, and Fusobacterium, but rare bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Helcococcus ovis cannot be ignored.

Reconstruction methodology of a Francis runner blade using numerical tools

        Giovanni Delgado,Sergio Galván,Francisco Dominguez-Mota,J. C. García,Esteban Valencia 대한기계학회 2020 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.34 No.3

In a hydraulic turbine, the search of a better energy exchange with the fluid has led to designs of runner blade of geometrical shapes so complex that they are considered as free-form surfaces. Since such blade characteristics are unable to be expressed by analytic functions, its complete and realistic geometrical reconstruction requires an excessive quantity of design parameters. This study proposes a coherent and robust full 3D blade numerical reconstruction methodology in which the geometrical definition of the blade is independent of its design parameters. A quantitative and qualitative fit evaluation shows that the blade surface reconstruction needs an important quantity of discrete data along the spanwise and streamwise direction to achieve a continuous and smooth definition. The results infer that the shape characteristics of damaged and worn blades without an original CAD model could be recovered, making this methodology attractive for industrial and optimization applications.

Rescue Maneuver of Migrated Coil Using the ERIC Device after Previous Attempts with Conventional Stentrievers

        Miguel Schüller-Arteaga,Jorge Galván-Fernández,Paloma Jiménez-Arribas,Leonor Nogales-Martin,Carlos Rodríguez-Arias,Mario Martínez-Galdámez 대한신경중재치료의학회 2021 Neurointervention Vol.16 No.2

Coil prolapse or migration is a rare but potentially serious complication that may occur during aneurysm embolization, with no standard management currently described. Here we describe our experience with the Embolus Retriever with Interlinked Cages (ERIC) device® (Microvention, Aliso Viejo, CA, USA) for the retrieval of prolapsed or migrated coils in a case series and Flow-Model analysis. First, a retrospective review was performed using our institution database for patients in which coil prolapse or migration occurred during aneurysm embolization, and data was collected and analyzed. Second, an in vitro Flow-Model analysis was performed comparing the ERIC device® with other stent retrievers for coil retrieval. In 2 cases, the ERIC device® successfully retrieved the displaced coil from intracranial circulation in 1 pass, after failure with other devices. In the Flow-Model, again the ERIC device® achieved success for retrieving a detached coil, whereas 2 other different stent retrievers failed to capture the coil after 2 attempts. The ERIC device® appears to be a safe and effective tool for retrieving a prolapsed or migrated coil from the intracranial circulation.

Immobilization of commercial acid phosphatases from wheat germ and potato onto ion exchangers

Lima Frederico Alves,Martins Pedro Alves,Wilson Galvão de Morais Júnior,Ribeiro Eloízio Júlio,Guisán José Manuel,de Resende Miriam Maria 한국화학공학회 2023 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.40 No.9

A very simple and fast immobilization technique based on ion exchange was investigated to improve the thermal stability of acid phosphatase from wheat germ and potato. Immobilization was not efficient for the DEAE-sepharose, and MANAE-agarose supports. On the other hand, Toyopearl DEAE-650s proved to be a promising support, with immobilization yield above 95% and recovery of activity above 85% for both enzymes. A second step was introduced in the immobilization protocol to improve the thermal stability of these biocatalysts. For this, oxidation and reduction of glycosidic chains of acid phosphatase were carried out, allowing the formation of aldehyde groups and subsequent interaction with the amine groups to further stabilize the different forms (free and immobilized). Both biocatalysts showed residual activity after 1 hour of inactivation at the temperature of 60 °C, a fact not observed for the free enzyme. The wheat germ acid phosphatase derivative was the most stable, with residual activity of 66.7% for the only immobilized derivative and 76.2% for the oxidized/reduced derivative. Also, the derivatives prepared by ion exchange adsorption on Toyopearl (TOYO), followed by oxidation/reduction and intramolecular crosslinking, were approximately 15 and 41 times more stable than the free enzyme from wheat germ.

Nutritional content of Liometopum apiculatum Mayr larvae (“escamoles”) by vegetation type in north-central Mexico

        José Domingo Cruz-Labana,María Magdalena Crosby-Galván,Adriana Delgado-Alvarado,José Luis Alcántara-Carbajal,Juan Manuel Cuca-García,Luis Antonio Tarango-Arámbula 한국응용곤충학회 2018 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.21 No.4

In Mexico the ant Liometopum apiculatum is an important insect nutritionally, economically and ecologically. Their larvae (“escamoles”) contain proteins, lipids, vitamins and minerals, the concentrations of which may be related with the type of vegetation where the ant forages. The objective of this study was to evaluate the content of macro and micro nutrients of L. apiculatum larvae collected in three types of vegetation in north-central Mexico. We determined content of moisture, crude protein, total lipids, crude fiber, ash, and nitrogen-free extract. The amino acids were analyzed by cationic Exchange chromatography with acid hydrolysis and fatty acids by gas chromatography and solvent extraction with sodium methoxide. The effect of vegetation type on nutrient content was determined with an ANOVA and Sheffé comparison of means (P < .05). The concentration of amino acids and fatty acids (FA) was analyzed with a Kruskall-Wallis test (P < .05). Significant differences were found in protein, lipids and ash (P < .0001) and moisture content (P < .0036). We identified 17 amino acids, which concentration differed by type of vegetation. There were no significant differences in fatty acids. It is likely that the differences in the concentrations of macronutrients are due to the diversity and differential density of the food components available in each type of vegetation for L. apiculatum, and that the number of types and quantity of amino acids and fatty acids depend on the chemical properties of the liquid secretions the ants obtain by trophobiosis.

Structural and optical characterization of wurtzite type ZnS

        J. Díaz-Reyes,R.S. Castillo-Ojeda,R. Sánchez-Espíndola,M. Galván-Arellano,O. Zaca-Morán 한국물리학회 2015 Current Applied Physics Vol.15 No.2

ZnS films were grown on (001) GaAs substrates at different temperatures by RF magnetron sputtering. The ZnS chemical stoichiometry was determined by Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), besides it allowed to find the residual impurities, mainly oxygen. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and Raman scattering reveal that ZnS deposited thin films showed hexagonal wurtzite crystalline phase. The films average crystallite size range was from 8.15 to 31.95 nm, which was determined using the Debye eScherrer equation for the peak W(101). Besides an experimental study of first- and second-order Raman scattering of ZnS films is made. An energy level diagram involving oxygen traps and interstitial sulphur ions is used to explain the origin of the radiative transitions observed in the room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra.
