Alcoholism Prevalence and Some Related Factors in Edirne

        Galip Ekuklu,Serol Deveci,Muzaffer Eskiocak,Ufuk Berberoglu,Ahmet Saltik 연세대학교의과대학 2004 Yonsei medical journal Vol.45 No.2

The aim of this research was to estimate the community prevalence of alcoholism and the potential risk factors that affect it in the Edirne provincial centre by using a scanning test. A cross-sectional study was carried out in the Edirne provincial centre. A sample population composed of 500 women and 200 men was selected randomly after the categorisation of the population according to ethnicity, age and sex. Through face-to-face interviews, data collection sheets, which were prepared to analyse potential factors affecting alcoholism frequency, were filled in by the sample population. The Michigan Alcoholism Scanning Test (MAST) was employed. According to MAST's normal grading, individuals with 5 or more points are evaluated as alcoholics. Accordingly, 8.2% of the sample population fit the definition of alcoholic. Alcoholism frequency was considerably higher in gypsies, the self-employed, smokers, and people with higher income. From logistic regression analysis alcoholism frequency was 12.4 times higher in men than in women, 3.2 times higher in gypsies than in others, 1.9 times higher in people who earned an income in the preceding week than in the unemployed, and 3.7 times higher in individuals who had smoked more than 100 cigarettes during their life or those who had smoked at least 1 cigarette for 3 months or for a longer period than in those who hadn't smoked any cigarettes. The prevalence of alcoholism in the Edirne provincial centre was similar to that in other countries in Europe. The most important finding was that alcohol consumption decreased in the unemployed, a finding that differs from that in other parts of the world. Gypsies, who differ in tradition, way of life, and job compared to the other strata of society, also suffered from higher alcohol consumption. This group usually consumed wine and generally did not eat while drinking.

Move over? Feminist reading of academic writing on Kurdish women

Özlem Belçim Galip 이화여자대학교 한국여성연구원 2021 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.27 No.4

Research on Kurdish women has burgeoned during the last decade, which is a positive sign of the growing interest regarding a highly marginalized population and region. However, most of these works contain theoretical and methodological inadequacies, fallacies and contradictory messages regarding the agency, or lack of it, of Kurdish women, along with an orientalist approach. Using feminist rhetorical criticism and discourse approaches, together with a focus on intersectionality, orientalism and postcolonial feminism, I examine some existing studies on Kurdish women and attempt to uncover the construction of and implications about Kurdish women. I also examine the degrees to which these studies promote narratives that uphold assumptions on gender and implicitly contribute to traditional ideologies of patriarchy and the stigma of being westernized. By demonstrating the significance of a plural model, which examines the lived realities of women, their negotiations and struggles, I urge a fresh approach to the discursive and contextual practice of scholarship on Kurdish women.

A Food-Borne Outbreak Caused by Salmonella Enteritidis

        Ozlem Tansel,Galip Ekuklu,Metin Otkun,Müşerref Tatman Otkun,Filiz Akata,Murat Tuğrul 연세대학교의과대학 2003 Yonsei medical journal Vol.44 No.2

This study was designed to define the epidemiology of a food-borne outbreak caused by Salmonella enteritidis that affected only one squadron of a military battalion located in the vicinity of the city of Edirne in Turkey. The outbreak was analyzed by a standard surveillance form of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The relationship between the eaten foods and cases was analyzed by Fisher's exact chi-square test, and odds ratios were calculated by a case-control study. The outbreak affected 60 of 168 soldiers in the squadron, 16 of whom were hospitalized. S.enteritidis was cultured in stools from 13 of the hospitalized soldiers and from 3 soldiers who had prepared the food. All strains were completely susceptible to antibiotics; their plasmid profiles were also identical. The highest attack rate detected was 55.7% in an omelet eaten 24 hours before (p < 0.001). Furthermore, it was the riskiest food according to the case-control study (ORe because they had been discarded. All of the hospitalized cases recovered, and none of the control cultures of stools yielded the pathogen after three weeks. In conclusion, although our results didn't indicate the exact source of the outbreak microbiologically, the omelet was considered to be the source based on the epidemiological proofs.

Energy, exergy and exergoeconomic analysis of solar-assisted vertical ground source heat pump system for heating season

Fatih Ünal,Galip Temir,Hasan Köten 대한기계학회 2018 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.32 No.8

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the experimental performance of a solar assisted vertical ground source heat pump system (VGSHP) for the winter climatic conditions of Mardin, which is in the South-Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey. For this aim, an experimental analysis was performed on solar assisted VGSHP system, which was designed to meet the heating needs of an experimental room, during the heating season (10.01.2013/03.31.2014). The experimentally obtained results were used to calculate energy, exergy and exergoeconomic analyses of the system and its components. The energy efficiency, exergy efficiency and exergoeconomic factors of the entire system were 67.36 %, 27.40 % and 60.51 %, respectively. In this study, the system was proposed for disseminating the use of alternative technologies supported by renewable energy systems and it has been tested for the first time in Mardin to meet its heating needs with convectional systems. The experimental results showed that the proposed solar assisted VGSHP system can be used for residential heating in Mardin and similar regions. As a result, it has been detected that the system is very effective in both reducing energy consumption and decreasing emissions of green-house gases.

Does Quantitative Tibial Ultrasound Predict Low Bone Mineral Density Defined by Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry?

        Hakan Tuna,Murat Birtane,Galip Ekuklu,Fikret Cermik,Filiz Tuna,Siranus Kokino 연세대학교의과대학 2008 Yonsei medical journal Vol.49 No.3

Purpose: Efforts for the early detection of bone loss and subsequent fracture risk by quantitative ultrasound (QUS), which is a non-invasive, radiation free, and cheaper method, seem rational to reduce the management costs. We aimed in this study to assess the probable correlation of speed of sound (SOS) values obtained by QUS with bone mineral density (BMD) as measured by the gold standard method, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), and to investigate the diagnostic value of QUS to define low BMD. Materials and Methods: One hundred twenty-two postmenopausal women having prior standard DEXA measurements were included in the study. Spine and proximal femur (neck, trochanter and Ward's triangle) BMD were assessed in a standard protocol by DEXA. The middle point of the right tibia was chosen for SOS measurement by tibial QUS. Results: The SOS values were observed to be significantly higher in the normal BMD (t score >-1) group at all measurement sites except for the lumbar region, when compared with the low BMD group (t score <-1). SOS was negatively correlated with age (r=-0.66) and month since menopause (r=-0.57). The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values for QUS t score to diagnose low BMD did not seem to be satisfactory at either of the measurement sites. Conclusion: Tibial SOS was correlated weakly with BMD values of femur and lumbar spine as measured by DEXA and its diagnostic value did not seem to be high for discriminating between normal and low BMD, at these sites.

Challenges and opportunities in the engineering of intelligent systems

        Liu, Shi-Chi,Tomizuka, Masayoshi,Ulsoy, A. Galip Techno-Press 2005 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.1 No.1

This paper describes the area of intelligent systems research as funded by the Civil and Mechanical Systems (CMS) Division of the National Science Foundation (NSF). With developments in computer science, information technology, sensing and control the design of typical machines and structures by civil and mechanical engineers is evolving toward intelligent systems that can sense, decide and act. This trend toward electro-mechanical design is well-established in modern machines (e.g. vehicles, robots, disk drives) and often referred to as mechatronics. More recently intelligent systems design is becoming an important aspect of structures, such as buildings and bridges. We briefly review recent developments in structural control, including the role that NSF has played in their development, and discuss on-going CMS activities in this area. In particular, we highlight the interdisciplinary initiative on Sensors and Sensor Networks and the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES). NEES is a distributed cyberinfrastructure to support earthquake engineering research, and provides the pioneering NEES grid computing environment for simulation, teleoperation, data collection and archiving, etc.

Frequency Domain Analysis of Laser and Acoustic Pressure Parameters in Photoacoustic Wave Equation for Acoustic Pressure Sensor Designs

Timucin Emre Tabaru,Sekip Esat Hayber,Omer Galip Saracoglu 한국광학회 2018 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.2 No.3

A pressure wave created by the photoacoustic effect is affected by the medium and by laser parameters. The effect of these parameters on the generated pressure wave can be seen by solving the photoacoustic wave equation. These solutions which are examined in the time domain and the frequency domain should be considered by researchers in acoustic sensor design. In particular, frequency domain analysis contains significant information for designing the sensor. The most important part of this information is the determination of the operating frequency of the sensor. In this work, the laser parameters to excite the medium, and the acoustic signal parameters created by the medium are analyzed. For the first time, we have obtained solutions for situations which have no frequency domain solutions in the literature. The main focal point in this work is that the frequency domain solutions of the acoustic wave equation are performed and the effects of the frequency analysis of the related parameters are shown comparatively from the viewpoint of using them in acoustic sensor designs.

      • Supervisory Control of a Face Milling Operation in different Manufacturing Environments

Landers, Robert G.,Ulsoy, A.Galip Institute of Control 2001 Transaction on control, automation and systems eng Vol.3 No.1

The promise of improved productivity and quality has lead to numerous research investigations in machining process monitoring and control. Recent studies have demonstrated that careful attention must be paid to the regulation of multiple process modules within a single operation such that each module performs its function properly and adverse interactions between modules do not occur. This had lead to the development of supervisory control; particularly to the development of methodologies to systemati-cally construct and implement these controllers. However, no research study has investigated the effect of the production environ-ment on the design of supervisor controllers. In this paper, the design of supervisory controllers for various production environ-ment is studied. The design approach given in Landers and Ulsoy(1998) is applied to construct two supervisory machining control-lers that are experimentally implemented in a face milling operation. Comparisons with an experimental implementation without process control illustrate the benefits of utilizing process controllers that are coordinated properly. The results also show that the given design approach may be used to construct supervisory controllers for different types of production environments.
