An Examination of Anthocyanins' and Anthocyanidins' Affinity for Cannabinoid Receptors
Gabriele Korte,Andrea Dreiseitel,Peter Schreier,Anett Oehme,Sanja Locher,Goeran Hajak,Philipp G. Sand 한국식품영양과학회 2009 Journal of medicinal food Vol.12 No.6
A growing body of evidence suggests that anthocyanins and anthocyanidins may possess analgesic properties in addition to neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory activities. These functionalities suggest a role for the cannabinoid receptor (CB) in mediating biological effects. Competitive radioligand binding assays identified cyanidin (Ki=16.2μM) and delphinidin (Ki=21.3μM) as ligands with moderate affinity to human CB1. For CB2, similar affinities were achieved by cyanidin (Ki=33.5μM), delphinidin (Ki=34.3μM), and peonidin (Ki=46.4μM). Inhibition constants >50μM were obtained for pelargonidin, malvidin, cyanidin-3,5-di-O-glucoside, cyanidin-3-O-glucoside, cyanidin-3-O-galactoside, and cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside for both CB subtypes.
Does Leaders' Health (and Work-Related Experiences) Affect their Evaluation of Followers' Stress?
Gabriele Giorgi,Serena Mancuso,Francisco Javier Fiz Perez,Francesco Montani,Francois Courcy,Giulio Arcangeli 한국산업안전보건공단 산업안전보건연구원 2015 Safety and health at work Vol.6 No.3
Background: Stressed workers suffer from severe health problems which appear to have increased. Poor leadership is especially considered a source of stress. Indeed, supervisors might perceive their subordinates to be similar to them as far as stress is concerned and this might more widespread in organizations than previously thought. Methods: The present research investigates the relationships between leaders’ health, in terms of workrelated stress, mental health, and workplace bullying and their evaluation of subordinates’ stress. Five regression models were formulated to test our hypothesis. This is a cross-sectional study among 261 Italian leaders, using supervisor self-assessment and leaders’ assessments of their subordinates. Results: Leaders’ health was related to their evaluation of staff stress. Job demand, lack of job control, and lack of support by colleagues and supervisors evaluated in their subordinates were particularly associated with the leaders’ own health. Conclusion: Implications for developing healthy leaders are finally discussed.
Levels of Narrativity in Doctor-patient-interaction
Gabriele Lucius-Hoene 대한의료커뮤니케이션학회 2008 의료커뮤니케이션 Vol.3 No.2
Narratives have been recognized as an important way of conveying the subjective meaning of personal experiences. Constructing personal narratives can also be considered as an epistemological tool to maske sense of ongoing events. In research on medical communication, the impact of a narrative approach to doctor-patient-communication has led to an extensive exploration of patients` narratives. On the other hand, narrative aspects of doctors` communication and actions have come into focus as well. After elaborating the special characteristics of narrative communication, the paper by means of examples drawn from clinical interactions identifies different levels of narrativity and of narrative collaboration in the manifold activities of doctor-patient-communication. It stresses the importance for medical doctors to recognize and acknowledge the patients` as well as their own explicit and implicit stories. The profit of attending to narrative aspects is not only to better understand the meaning of an illness and its impact in patients` lifes, but by taking them into account also to meet their needs, to improve cooperation and compliance and to be sensitive to the ethical aspects of clinical work.

Objective Given that there are no studies on diseases that occur by waiting for hospitalization, we aimed to evaluate the main causes of death in the emergency room (ER) and their relationship with overcrowding. Methods Patients who died in the ER in the past 2 years (pediatrics and trauma victims excluded) were divided into two groups: patients who died within 6 hours of arrival (emergency department [ED] group) and patients who died later (LD group). We compared the causes of death, total vital signs, diagnostic tests performed, and therapy between the groups. We assessed for possible correlation between the number of monthly deaths per group and four variables of overcrowding: number of patients treated per month, waiting time before medical visit (W-Time), mean intervention time (I-Time), and number of patients admitted to the ward per month (NPA). Results During the two years, 175 patients had died in our ER (52% in ED group and 48% in LD group). The total time spent in the ER was, respectively, 2.9±0.2 hours for ED group and 17.9± 1.5 hours for LD group. The more frequent cause of death was cardiovascular syndrome (30%) in ED group and sepsis (27%) and acute respiratory failure (27%) in LD group. Positive correlations between number of monthly deaths and W-Time (R2 0.51, P< 0.0001), and NPA (R2 0.37, P

Ultrafast imaging of soft materials during shear flow
Gabriele Colombo,Roberta Massaro,Steven Coleman,Jörg Läuger,Peter Van Puyvelde,Jan Vermant 한국유변학회 2019 Korea-Australia rheology journal Vol.31 No.4
The direct imaging of flow induced microstructural changes in complex fluids can have advantages over the use of scattering methods, since localized phenomena can be observed directly and more mechanistic insights can be obtained. This is useful in particular for materials with hierarchical or multiscale structures such as aggregated dispersions. Rheoconfocal instruments are ideally suited for this purpose but were, as yet, limited to relatively low imaging rates. In the present work, a stress-controlled rheometer was coupled to a fast scanning, instant structured illumination confocal microscope which uses a multi-array illumination and detection scheme. A second motor is integrated in a custom-made rheoconfocal instrument to achieve the counter-rotation of the lower glass plate. The resulting stagnation plane can be moved within the shearing gap in real time and allows the stable imaging of micro-structural features under steady shear. Velocity profiles were measured to validate the performance of the mechanical components, using particle image velocimetry on a sterically stabilized suspension. Structured illumination optics yielded an excellent inplane spatial resolution, while the multipoint scanning allows speeds as high as 1000 frames per second at full frame resolution. However, for rheological studies the 3D structure should ideally be resolved. The mechanical refocusing using a fast piezo stage at high speeds led to deformations of the lower thin glass plate. To circumvent this bottleneck, a focus-tunable lens was incorporated in the setup to acquire 3D image volumes at video rates. The excellent combination of temporal and spatial resolution under flow is demonstrated here using selected results from aggregated colloidal dispersions. The microstructure of a model depletion gel is studied over a broad range of shear rates under strong to moderate flow conditions. The ability to measure rheological properties while imaging the time-dependent microstructure is demonstrated with particles dispersed in a more viscous PDMS matrix. Transient rheology is reported simultaneously with high resolution imaging of the microscopic structural recovery. This novel tool enables the direct imaging of rheologically complex materials under conditions relevant to processing, to elucidate the physical phenomena underlying nonlinear rheology and thixotropy.
