UPTAKE OF ORGANIC ACIDS BY Clostridium acetobutylicum B18 UNDER CONTROLLED pH AND REDUCED BUTANOL INHIBITION

Geng, Qinghuang,Park, Chang Ho,Janni, Kevin 한국화학공학회 1995 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.12 No.3

Uptake of organic acids by Clostridium acetobutylicum B18 was studied at controlled pH and under reduced butanol inhibition conditions. A pervaporative membrane module was placed in the fermentor to remove butanol from the fermentation broth. Uptake of added. butyric acid followed zero order kinetics at pH 4.75 and first order kinetics at pH 5.75. At pH 5.25 the kinetic order shifted from zero to first order as the butyric acid was taken up. At the point of order shift undissociated butyric acid (UBA) concentration was approximately 0.5 g/L. Unlike butyric acid, uptake of acetic acid followed first order kinetics regardless of pH. The difference in acid uptake kinetics could be explained by the combined effect of acid diffusion across the cell membrane and intracellular enzymatic reaction. The acid concentration for kinetic order shift seemed to be dependent upon pH and the kind of the acid used. Glucose was consumed simultaneously with added acids. Both butyric and acetic acids were taken up simultaneously but the rate was faster for butyric acid. Added butyric acid was completely assimilated whereas acetic acid uptake was incomplete.

A Virtual RLC Active Damping Method for LCL-Type Grid-Connected Inverters

Geng, Yiwen,Qi, Yawen,Zheng, Pengfei,Guo, Fei,Gao, Xiang The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2018 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.18 No.5

Proportional capacitor-current-feedback active damping (AD) is a common damping method for the resonance of LCL-type grid-connected inverters. Proportional capacitor-current-feedback AD behaves as a virtual resistor in parallel with the capacitor. However, the existence of delay in the actual control system causes impedance in the virtual resistor. Impedance is manifested as negative resistance when the resonance frequency exceeds one-sixth of the sampling frequency ($f_s/6$). As a result, the damping effect disappears. To extend the system damping region, this study proposes a virtual resistor-inductor-capacitor (RLC) AD method. The method is implemented by feeding the filter capacitor current passing through a band-pass filter, which functions as a virtual RLC in parallel with the filter capacitor to achieve positive resistance in a wide resonance frequency range. A combination of Nyquist theory and system close-loop pole-zero diagrams is used for damping parameter design to obtain optimal damping parameters. An experiment is performed with a 10 kW grid-connected inverter. The effectiveness of the proposed AD method and the system's robustness against grid impedance variation are demonstrated.

      • Research on the Relationship between New and Old Kinetic Energy Conversion and Competitive Advantage of Service Enterprises

( Geng Xize ),( Kong Lingming ),( Kim Yeong Gil ) 한국품질경영학회 2019 한국품질경영학회 학술대회 Vol.2019 No.-

The "new and old kinetic energy conversion" is a national development idea recently proposed by the Chinese government. Industrial transformation and upgrading is the external manifestation of the new and old kinetic energy conversion. The new and old kinetic energy conversion is the internal driving force to promote industrial transformation and upgrading. Industrial transformation and upgrading are closely related to the competitive advantages of service-oriented enterprises. Based on the empirical research by using Concordance Process theory, this paper explores the internal relationship between the old and new kinetic energy conversion and the competitive advantage of service enterprises, and establishes a model of the relationship between new and old kinetic energy conversion and service enterprise competitive advantage. The model reveals the dynamics machismo of new and old kinetic energy conversion for service enterprises, and also provides an effective method for government departments to promote the new and old kinetic energy conversion.

Research on a Multi-Objective Control Strategy for Current-source PWM Rectifiers under Unbalanced and Harmonic Grid Voltage Conditions

Geng, Yi-Wen,Liu, Hai-Wei,Deng, Ren-Xiong,Tian, Fang-Fang,Bai, Hao-Feng,Wang, Kai The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2018 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.18 No.1

Unbalanced and distorted grid voltages cause the grid side current of a current source PWM rectifier to be heavily distorted. They can also cause the DC-link current to fluctuate with a huge amplitude. In order to enhance the performance of a current-source PWM rectifier under unbalanced and harmonic grid voltage conditions, a mathematical model of a current-source PWM rectifier is established and a flexible multi-objective control strategy is proposed to control the DC-link current and grid-current. The fundamental positive/negative sequence, $5^{th}$ and $7^{th}$ order harmonic components of the grid voltage are first separated with the proposed control strategy. The grid current reference are optimized based on three objectives: 1) sinusoidal and symmetrical grid current, 2) sinusoidal grid current and elimination of the DC-current $2^{nd}$ order fluctuations, and 3) elimination of the DC-current $2^{nd}$ and $6^{th}$ order fluctuations. To avoid separation of the grid current components, a multi-frequency proportional-resonant controller is applied to control the fundamental positive/negative sequence, $5^{th}$ and $7^{th}$ order harmonic current. Finally, experimental results verify the effectiveness of proposed control strategy.

Injunctive Relief in SEP Litigation: The Consideration of Innovation and Competition

        Geng Bang,吕明瑜 전북대학교 동북아법연구소 2020 동북아법연구 Vol.13 No.3

The injunction is a significant relief for patent holders. However, if a standard-essential patent (SEP) holder apply for an injunction, it may prevent potential competitors from entering into the related market and constitutes abuse of market dominant position. In Huawei v. ZTE case, the CJEU set a rule of " five steps" to judge the justification of the SEP holders' injunction application. This issue refers to not only the interests between SEP holders and users, but also the aim of innovation incentive and the aim of free competition protection. To better balance the two significant legislative intentions namely ‘innovation incentive’ and‘competition freedom’and further improve the social and economic development, there are more elements need to be concerned: (1)As for market dominant position judgment, SEP holders should not be directly assumed as a market dominator, following elements need to be concerned: the competition situation among different standards, the market share of SEP, whether the standard is a mandatory one, the competition between standard products and non-standard products, the technology transfer costs.(2) As for abuse behavior judgment, the ‘five step’ is not enough. The identity of SEP holders, the time of the injunction application, the good faith of SEP users, whether the SEP holders charges for an unreasonably high royalty, these factors also need to be examined. (3)As for the assessment of validity of injunction application, the principle of weighing advantages and disadvantages needs to be established. The court should uphold the injunction application if the advantages outweigh disadvantages, otherwise the injunction should not be granted.

Analysis on Temperature Distribution and Current-Carrying Capacity of GIL Filled with Fluoronitriles-CO₂ Gas Mixture

        Geng Chen,Youping Tu,Cong Wang,Yi Cheng,Han Jiang,Hongyang Zhou,Hua Jin 대한전기학회 2018 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.13 No.6

Fluoronitriles-CO₂ gas mixtures are promising alternatives to SF6 in environmentallyfriendly gas-insulated transmission lines (GILs). Insulating gas heat transfer characteristics are of major significance for the current-carrying capacity design and operational state monitoring of GILs. In this paper, a three-dimensional calculation model was established for a GIL using the thermal-fluid coupled finite element method. The calculated results showed close agreement with experimentally measured data. The temperature distribution of a GIL filled with the Fluoronitriles-CO₂ mixture was obtained and compared with those of GILs filled with CO₂ and SF6. Furthermore, the effects of the mixture ratio of the component gases and the gas pressure on the temperature rise and current-carrying capacity of the GIL were analyzed. Results indicated that the heat transfer performance of the Fluoronitriles-CO₂ gas mixture was better than that of CO₂ but worse than that of SF₆. When compared with SF6, use of the Fluoronitriles-CO₂ gas mixture caused a reduction in the GIL’s current-carrying capacity. In addition, increasing the Fluoronitriles gas component ratio or increasing the pressure of the insulating gas mixture could improve the heat dissipation and current-carrying capacity of the GIL. These research results can be used to design environmentally-friendly GILs containing Fluoronitriles-CO₂ gas mixtures.

      • Morphological and chemical composition characteristics of summertime atmospheric particles collected at Tokchok Island, Korea

        Geng, H.,Jung, H.J.,Park, Y.,Hwang, H.,Kim, H.,Kim, Y.J.,Sunwoo, Y.,Ro, C.U. Pergamon Press ; Elsevier [distribution] 2009 Atmospheric environment Vol.43 No.21

Determination of the chemical compositions of atmospheric single particles in the Yellow Sea region is critical for evaluating the environmental impact caused by air pollutants emitted from mainland China and the Korean peninsula. After ambient aerosol particles were collected by the Dekati PM10 cascade impactor on July 17-23, 2007 at Tokchok Island (approximately 50 km west of the Korean coast nearby Seoul), Korea, overall 2000 particles (on stage 2 and 3 with cut-off diameters of 2.5-10 μm and 1.0-2.5 μm, respectively) in 10 samples were determined by using low-Z particle electron probe X-ray microanalysis. X-ray spectral and secondary electron image (SEI) data showed that soil-derived and sea-salt particles which had reacted or were mixed with SO2 and NOx (or their acidic products) outnumbered the primary and ''genuine'' ones (59.2% vs. 19.2% in the stage 2 fraction and 41.3% vs. 9.9% in the stage 3 fraction). Moreover, particles containing nitrate in the secondary soil-derived species greatly outnumbered those containing sulfate. Organic particles, mainly consisting of marine biogenic species, were more abundant in the stage 2 fraction than in the stage 3 fraction (11.6% vs. 5.1%). Their relative abundance was greater than the sum of carbon-rich, K-containing, Fe-containing, and fly ash particles, which exhibited low frequencies in all the samples. In addition, many droplets rich in C, N, O, and S were observed. They tended to be small, exhibiting a dark round shape on SEI, and generally included 8-20 at.% C, 0-12 at.% N, 60-80 at.% O, and 4-10 at.% S (sometimes with <3 at.% Mg and Na). They were attributed to be a mixture of carbonaceous matter, H2SO4, and NH4HSO4/(NH4)2SO4, mostly from the reaction of atmospheric SO2 with NH3 under high relative humidity. The analysis of the relationship between the aerosol particle compositions and 72-h backward air-mass trajectories suggests that ambient aerosols at Tokchok Island are strongly affected not only by seawater from the Yellow Sea but also by anthropogenic pollutants emitted from China and the Seoul-Incheon metropolis, resulting in the dominance of complex secondary aerosol particles.
