      • What do patients with psoriasis think about the causes of their disease and use for psoriasis?

        Müzeyyen Gönül,Seray Külcü Çakmak,Ülker Gül,Zeynep Bıyıklı 셀메드 세포교정의약학회 2012 TANG Vol.2 No.1

There are few reports about the beliefs of psoriasis patients related to their disorder and therapy modalities except for the medical ones. We aimed to investigate the beliefs of psoriasis patients about their disorders, where they had attended therapies unrelated to dermatologists and what modality of unconventional therapies they used for psoriasis in Turkey. The study was performed on 141 psoriasis patients. The age, sex, education status and the number of visits to the dermatology clinics were recorded. How the patients decided to visit the dermatology clinic (themselves, directed by others), where they attended for treatment of psoriasis outside of the dermatologist, what they think about the causes of their disease and what they used for treatment of psoriasis were asked. The mean age of the patients was 33.44 ± 15.13 years. The patients whose ages were over 30 years significantly more went to dermatology clinics. 68.1% of the patients attended the dermatology clinic based on the individual decision, 18.4% were directed by family members and 5.7% by friends. 45.4% of the patients believed that stress was the cause of their disease. 54.6% of the patients had used at least one type of unconventional therapy for psoriasis. The most frequently used unconventional therapy forms were herbal (24.1%) and spiritual therapies (22%). One conclusion is psoriasis patients need education about their diseases. Dermatologists should have information about the tendencies of the patients and approach the patients with sensitivity and empathy and give objective knowledge about psoriasis.

      • Eruptive xanthomas: Might be traditional hawthorn vinegar induced?

        Müzeyyen Gönül,Seray Külcü Çakmak,Esra Özhamam 셀메드 세포교정의약학회 2013 TANG Vol.3 No.4

Eruptive xanthomas that are characterized by yellowish red papules results from hyperlipidemia, particularly hypertriglyceridemia. The hyperlipidemia responsible for this disorder can be caused by a primary genetic defect, a secondary disorder, or both. Some medications such as estrogen or retinoid treatments may cause eruptive xantomas by increasing serum lipids. We present a case eruptive xantomas triggered by hawthorn vinegar.

Role of Emotional Intelligence in Conflict Management Strategies of Nurses

Ceyda Basogul,Gönül Özgür 한국간호과학회 2016 Asian Nursing Research Vol.10 No.3

Purpose: This study analyzes the emotional intelligence levels and conflict management strategies of nurses and the association between them. Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted with 277 nurses in a stratified random sample from a university hospital in Turkey. The data were collected from nurses who gave their informed consent to participate using a personal information form, the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II and Bar-On's Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-I). Data were assessed by descriptive statistics, t tests, and Pearson correlation analyses, using SPSS software. Results: The levels of the nurses' strategies were as follows: avoiding (M ¼ 2.98), dominating (M = 2.76), and obliging (M = 2.71) were medium; compromising (M = 1.99) and integration (M = 1.96) were low. The levels of the emotional intelligence of nurses (mean ¼ 2.75) were medium on a 5-point scale. Integration (r = .168), obliging (r = .25), dominating (r = .18), and compromising (r = .33), which are conflict management strategies, were positively correlated with scores of emotional intelligence, and avoiding (r = .25) was negatively correlated with scores of emotional intelligence (p < .05). Conclusions: The study determined that nurses' emotional intelligence affects conflict management strategies. To use effective strategies in conflict management, nurses must develop emotional intelligence. Training programs on conflict management and emotional intelligence are needed to improve effective conflict management in healthcare facilities.

Fosmid Cloning, Nucleotide Sequence, and Characterization of a Beta-Lactamase Gene from Subsurface Isolates

        Nurcan Vardar,Gönül Vardar-Schara 한국미생물학회 2012 The journal of microbiology Vol.50 No.4

A beta-lactamase gene was isolated for the first time from a terrestrial subsurface environment using a combined cultivation and direct cloning strategy. The gene, discovered from 24 m below land surface in Hawaii, was most similar to the penicillinase from Bacillus licheniformis. The resistance gene was confirmed via subcloning and its minimum inhibitory concentration values were measured against several test betalactam antibiotics. This study extends the knowledge on resistance to antimicrobials, which may help the efforts to minimize their future threat.

      • Traditional topical herbal therapies in psoriasis

Havva Ozge Keseroglu,Müzeyyen Gönül 셀메드 세포교정의약학회 2014 TANG Vol.4 No.4

Psoriasis is a common, chronic, recurrent, immune-mediated inflammatory disorder of skin. Although conventional topical and systemic therapies yield remission for a while, they carry a risk of many side effects that limit the long term use of these agents and the disease recurs generally in a short period of time after cessation of therapy. An increasing number of psoriatic patients are using herbal products as a treatment to control their disease with less side effects. Clinicians should be aware of plants used in psoriasis and side effects related with them. The aim of this article is to review the different herbs used in psoriasis treatment.

Endocan and Non-Dipping Circadian Pattern in Newly Diagnosed Essential Hypertension

        Tolga Çimen,Murat Bilgin,Ahmet Akyel,Mehmet Ali Felekoğlu,Ali Nallbani,Şeyda Özdemir,Gönül Erden,Alpaslan Öztürk,Mehmet Doğan,Ekrem Yeter 대한심장학회 2016 Korean Circulation Journal Vol.46 No.6

Background and Objectives: Non-dipper hypertension is frequently accompanied by endothelial dysfunction and activation. Previous studies suggested that endocan may be a novel endothelial dysfunction marker. This study aims to investigate the association between circadian blood pressure (BP) pattern and plasma endocan levels together with high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) in patients with newly diagnosed untreated hypertension. Subjects and Methods: Twenty-four hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring was recorded in 35 dipper, 35 non-dipper hypertensives and 35 healthy controls. Endocan levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Serum levels of hsCRP were also recorded. Results: Despite similar daytime and 24-hour average BP values between dippers and non-dippers, statistically significant high nocturnal BP was accompanied by a non-dipping pattern (Systolic BP: 132±9 vs. 147±11 mmHg; Distolic BP: 80±7 vs. 91±9 mmHg, respectively, p<0.001 for both). Non-dipper patients demonstrated higher endocan levels compared to dippers and normotensives (367 (193-844) pg/mL, 254 (182-512) pg/mL and 237 (141-314) pg/ml, respectively, p<0.001). HsCRP levels were significantly higher in non-dippers than the other groups (p=0.013). In a multivariate logistic regression analysis, endocan (p=0.021) and hsCRP (p=0.044) were independently associated with a non-dipping pattern. Conclusion: Elevated endocan levels were found in non-dipper groups. Endocan and hsCRP were found to be independently associated with a non-dipping pattern. We suggest that elevated levels of endocan in non-dipper hypertensive patients might be associated with a longer duration of exposure to high BP. These results point to the possible future role of endocan in selection of hypertensive patients at higher risk or target organ damage
