      • Electrical manipulation of non-collinear antiferromagnet

        Electrical manipulation of magnetic materials has been of paramount interest in spintronics community for the last quarter century. Earlier studies focused on ferromagnetic materials and demonstrated magnetization switching, phase transition between ferromagnetism and para-magnetism, oscillation, resonance, and so on [1]. Among them, the spin-transfer torque induced magnetization switching has evolved into an essential ingredient in magneto resistive random access memory technology, and other phenomena are also expected to be useful for new functional devices. In 2016, electrical manipulation of collinear antiferromagnet CuMnAs was demonstrated, where staggered spin-orbit torque was utilized [2]. Since the antiferromagnetic materials have been believed to have less chance of applications due to the difficulty to control the internal state, this study renewed the perception of spintronics research and opened a new paradigm, so-called antiferromagnetic spintronics. Besides, a very recent study [3] reported an electrical switching of non-collinear antiferromagnet, another type of antiferromagnets with chiral-spin structure exhibiting intriguing properties that was believed to be observed only in ferromagnets [4], where the observed phenomenon was explained by the same protocol with the spin-orbit torque induced switching of ferromagnetic materials [5,6]. So far, however, unique properties and functionalities of non-collinear antiferromagnet have not been unraveled. Here I show a chiral-spin rotation in non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn3Sn driven by the spin-orbit torque [7]; the phenomenon has no parallel in the research history of spintronics. We prepare cross-shaped Hall devices made of an epitaxial W/Ta/Mn3Sn/Pt stack [8] and investigate the response of Hall resistance to the lateral current. We observe a characteristic fluctuation of the Hall resistance above a certain threshold, which can be consistently explained by considering persistent rotation of chiral-spin structure induced by the spin-orbit torque. We also find that the efficiency to manipulate the spin structure in this scheme is much higher than that in ferromagnet and collinear antiferromagnet.

        Introducing On-line Music Room

        ‘온라인 음악실’은 (주)교육예술사가 발행한 음악교과서에 게재되어 있는 악보와 해설에, CD음원, LD영상, 새롭게 제작한 음성․동화상 데이터 등을 추가하여 웹 상에 구축한 “음이 나오는 교과서”이다. 이 사이트는 전 교과교사가 음악전공교사와 같은 수준의 수업을 실현하고, 학생들의 음악에 대한 흥미와 관심을 유발시켜 음악의 기초 기본 습득 및 연주 기술의 향상을 지원하며, 게시판과 링크를 통한 정보수집 및 교원간 교류 활성화를 목표로 하고 있다. ‘온라인 수업’은 악보와 파트별 연습을 통하여 합창․합주 등의 개인/그룹 연습을 실현하는 콘텐츠이다. ‘전체 듣고 파악하기’, ‘노래 레슨’, ‘반주’, ‘표현하기’, ‘합창하기’, ‘리코더와 함께’, ‘서양음악공부’, ‘지도의 포인트’의 8항목으로 구성되어 있고, 초등학교 5, 6학년용 16곡이 수록되어 있다. ‘음악연표’는 중학교 교과서의 감상 교재 중 악곡해설이 있는 것을 중심으로 선택하였으며, 일본 음악은 아악을 비롯하여 4작품, 서양 음악은 43인의 작품이 게재되어 있다. ‘일본의 음악’과 ‘세계의 음악’에는 악보, 사진, CD음원, 동화상, 문자를 활용하여, 아악과 세계 15개 지역의 민족음악의 연주형태와 주법, 악곡의 구조, 악기의 구조와 음색 등에 관한 정보를 제공하였다. 해설은 대상을 아동과 교사로 구분하여 두 단계로 수록하였다. ‘게시판’에는 ‘음악관련’, ‘시스템 관련’의 두개의 범주에 대해 정보교환을 하고 있다. 투고되는 내용은 플러그인과 시스템에 관한 질문, 악곡 및 사이트 등에 관한 질문, 음악실에 관한 의견, 수업에서 사용한 감상, 지도 방법에 관한 질문, 음악교사 지망에 관한 질문, 작곡가 등에 대한 질문, 음악(교육)에 관한 정보 등이다. 초등학교 두 곳에서 온라인 음악실을 사용하여 실험 수업을 한 결과 알게 된 점은 다음과 같다. ‘온라인 음악실’은 문부성이 종래의 패키지 소프트웨어 개발에서 인터넷 콘텐츠 개발로 전환한 최초의 모델 사업에 상응하는 것이었다. 음악지도 및 음악학습지원 시스템으로서 최대공약수적인 존재임을 실감할 수 있었다. 교사의 역량을 넘어 개인이나 그룹으로 지도할 수 있음을 알게 되었다. 컴퓨터와 인터넷이 일반화된 오늘날, 음악 교과서의 디지털화, 네트워크화가 도움이 됨을 알게되었다. 그리고, 인터넷 콘텐츠의 장점으로서 이하의 점을 알게 되었다. 갱신이 용이하므로 교육현장의 필요를 수시로 반영할 수 있다. 데이터를 서버에 보관해 둘 수 있으므로 DVD등의 미디어로 공급하는 것보다 큰 용량의 데이터를 사용할 수 있다.‘온라인 음악실’에서는 스트리밍 방식을 채용하여 데이터 파일이 열람자의 단말기에 다운로드 되지 않으므로, 저작권을 보호할 수 있다. 학교의 인터넷 보급 상황이 열악하고, 인터넷설정(방화벽의 설정 시)에 의해 음성․동화상 콘텐츠를 열람할 수 없는 경우가 있으며, 열람에 필요한 프로그램(Real Audio Player, Quick Time Player, Shockwave Player등)을 다운로드 할 수 없으므로, 음이 나오지 않거나 동화상을 볼 수 없는 사례가 많았고, 데이터를 읽는데 시간이 걸려 소리는 나지만 영상이 보이지 않는 경우가 있었다. 콘텐츠의 유용한 활용을 위해서는 학교 내 정보인프라의 정비와 시스템 담당자, 컴퓨터 담당교원, 학교의 밀접한 관계 형성이 요구된다. ‘온라인 수업’에 제공되어있는 곡의 수가 적고, 학년 범위가 좁으며, ‘음악연표’, ‘일본의 음악’, ‘세계의 음악’의 내용이 양과 질의 측면에서 불충분하다. 음악의 제요소와 음악 용어에 대한 콘텐츠가 요구된다. 또한, 웹사이트 관리 운영, 콘텐츠 갱신에 대한 예산 조치가 행해지지 않고 있으며, 넷트워크 콘텐츠 제공에 대한 부과금의 방법이 확립되어 있지 않다. 민간기업, 총무성, 문부성, 경제산업성에 의한 ‘교육용 콘텐츠 통신 플랫폼 형성 협의회’가 2001년 8월에 설립되어 활동하고 있으므로, “밀레니엄 프로젝트 ‘교육의 정보화’”를 향한 관민협동을 기대해 본다.         Clarification the Current Situation of Deterioration and Its Causes of Modernization Heritage Built with Bricks in Japan -A Case Study of Long-Term Monitoring Investigation at Sarushima Battery, Yokosuka, Japan-

        A long-term monitoring investigation at Sarushima Battery (Kanagawa, Japan), which is one of the modernization heritages was conducted from 2017.06 to 2020.12. The investigation of the temperature and relative humidity (RH), measurement of the amount of brick decay, and X-ray diffraction analysis of the brick decay was conducted to understand in detail the environment in which the historical brick structure, the state of deterioration, identify the factors of deterioration. Furthermore, it was discussed whether the suitability of these investigation methods for assessing the status, identifying the level of deterioration and the factors that led to deterioration at the historical brick heritages. It was found that the brick deterioration at the site progressed especially in two periods: in April, and from June to August. These periods coincided with the period when the RH inside the structure decreased, and the Toyo-gumi bricks were in the process of absorbing moisture. Several different types of salts were detected in brick decay, especially thenardite, which is considered highly hazardous and destructive during periods when the amount of brick decay increased. Therefore, the RH in the structure and the salts present in the bricks were identified as one of the factors in the deterioration of the bricks at the site. The methods used in this study are appropriate as the initial survey methods for investigating the current conditions and identifying the causes of deterioration because it is possible to understand the environment within the modernization heritages, grasp the details of deterioration progression, and identify the characteristics of deterioration progression and its factors through long-term investigation using the simple methods.

        Effects of vasopressin administration in the oral cavity on cardiac function and hemodynamics in rats

        Background: The vasoconstrictive effect of epinephrine in local anesthetics affects the heart, which leads to hesitation among dentists in injecting local anesthetics into patients with cardiovascular disease. Due to its vasoconstrictive effects, the present study investigated the effects of vasopressin administration on cardiac function in rats. Methods: Experiment 1 aimed to determine the vasopressin concentration that could affect cardiac function. An arterial catheter was inserted into the male Wistar rats. Next, 0.03, 0.3, and 3.0 U/mL arginine vasopressin (AVP) (0.03V, 0.3V, and 3.0V) was injected into the tongue, and the blood pressure was measured. The control group received normal saline only. In Experiment 2, following anesthesia infiltration, a pressure–volume catheter was placed in the left ventricle. Baseline values of end-systolic elastance, end-diastolic volume, end-systolic pressure, stroke work, stroke volume, and end-systolic elastance were recorded. Next, normal saline and 3.0V AVP were injected into the tongue to measure their effect on hemodynamic and cardiac function. Results: After 3.0V administration, systolic blood pressures at 10 and 15 min were higher than those of the control group; they increased at 10 min compared with those at baseline. The diastolic blood pressures at 5–15 min were higher than those of the control group; they increased at 5 and 10 min compared with those at baseline. The preload decreased at 5 and 10 min compared to that at baseline. However, the afterload increased from 5 to 15 min compared with that of the control group; it increased at 10 min compared with that at baseline. Stroke volume decreased at 10 and 15 min compared with that of the control group; it decreased from 5 to 15 min compared with that at baseline. Stroke work decreased from 5 to 15 min compared with that of the control group; it decreased from 5 to 15 min compared with that at baseline. Conclusion: Our results showed that 3.0 U/mL concentration of vasopressin resulted in increased blood pressure, decreased stroke volume and stoke work, decreased preload and increased afterload, without any effect on myocardial contractility.

        Pharmacokinetic Study of Compound K in Japanese Subjects After Ingestion of Panax ginseng Fermented by Lactobacillus paracasei A221 Reveals Significant Increase of Absorption into Blood

        Compound K (CK) is a metabolite of a saponin in Panax ginseng, formed from ginsenoside, a triterpenoid glycoside, by human intestinal bacteria. Lactobacillus paracasei A221 isolated from fermented food can hydrolyze (deglycosylate) the main ginsenoside, ginsenoside Rb1, and generate CK. However, the pharmacokinetics of L. paracasei A221 fermented ginseng (FG) and nonfermented ginseng (NFG) have not been investigated so far. The aim of this study was to investigate the pharmacokinetics of CK after oral administration of single doses of FG and NFG in healthy Japanese adults. An open-label, randomized, single-dose, two-period, crossover study was conducted in 12 Japanese healthy volunteers (five men and seven women, aged 40–60 years). All subjects were equally allocated into two groups and administered tablets containing FG or NFG. Until 24 h after the administration, blood samples were sequentially collected, plasma concentrations of CK were measured, and the pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated. We also expected restoration of decreased testosterone level as one of the beneficial effects of FG and measured plasma total testosterone concentrations in male volunteers. The means of Tmax, Cmax, and area under the concentration–time curve (AUC) were significantly different between the two groups. In the FG group, AUC0–12h (ng h/mL) and AUC0–24h (ng h/mL) were, respectively, 58.3- and 17.5-fold higher than those in the NFG group. Moreover, mean testosterone concentration in the FG group significantly increased 24 h after administration. These results showed that the main ginsenoside metabolite of ginseng, CK, produced by L. paracaseiA221 has potential utility in health maintenance in healthy middle-aged and old Japanese adults.

        Next generation sequencing and array-based comparative genomic hybridization for molecular diagnosis of pediatric endocrine disorders

        Next-generation sequencing (NGS) and array-based comparative genomic hybridization (array CGH) have enabled us to perform high-throughput mutation screening and genome-wide copy number analysis, respectively. These methods can be used for molecular diagnosis of pediatric endocrine disorders. NGS has determined the frequency and phenotypic variation of mutations in several disease-associated genes. Furthermore, whole exome analysis using NGS has successfully identified several novel causative genes for endocrine disorders. Array CGH is currently used as the standard procedure for molecular cytogenetic analysis. Array CGH can detect various submicroscopic genomic rearrangements involving exons or enhancers of disease-associated genes. This review introduces some examples of the use of NGS and array CGH for the molecular diagnosis of pediatric endocrine disorders.
