A fully actuated system can execute any joint trajectory. However, if a system is under-actuated, not all joint trajectories are attainable. The authors have actively pursued novel designs of under-actuated robotic arms which are both controllable and feedback linearizable. These robots can perform point-to-point motions in the state space, but potentially can be designed to work with fewer actuators, hence with lower cost. With this same spirit, the technical note investigates the property of differential flatness for a class of planar under-actuated open-chain robots having a specific inertia distribution, but driven by only one or two actuators. This technical note addresses the following theoretical question: what placement of one or two actuators will make an n-DOF planar robot differentially flat if it is designed so that its center of mass always lies at joint 2?

Uses of online technologies in financial education

New online technologies, social media and applications such as videoconferencing and online broadcasting services, forums, blogs, or wikis present interesting possibilities for financial education. The main agents in the online financial landscape that use these tools for educational purposes are public and educational institutions, non-profit organizations, brokers, financial news websites, and experts in the field. In this study, the principal online initiatives of financial education in English and Spanish are analyzed. For the purposes of the investigation, an initial exploratory study was conducted to collect and classify the different online agents involved in the field of finance. Then, the main online initiatives aimed at educating their users in finance and trading were identified, classified, and described according to the promoting agent and the online technologies used. The results of the study are presented with specific examples of how new online technologies are used by these agents for educational purposes in the financial education field. The study identified a wide variety of initiatives of this type. However, whereas a wide variety of resources in English is available, very few are promoted in Spanish. As a result, an initiative of financial news website portal targeted to this community has started to cover this gap. The initiative will consider the educational component as an important part of their content and production with the aim of teaching the Hispanic community in finance and trading.

Background and Purpose We aimed to determine the correlation between subjective evaluations of mood and cognitive functions by patients and informants, and the findings of a battery of neuropsychological tests. Methods We analyzed 74 subjects recruited from a general neurology clinic, comprising 37 patients with cognitive complaints and 37 informants (either relatives or caregivers in close contact with the patients). Four ordinal scales concerning recent memory, verbal expression, initiative, and mood were correlated with the findings of a series of neuropsychological tests and questionnaires using the tau b coefficient. Results The scores for the patients on the scales were most strongly correlated with scores on the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), while the scores for the informants were most strongly correlated with scores on GDS-15, the Informant Questionnaire on Cognitive Decline, and the Functional Activities Questionnaire (FAQ). The most significant correlation was between the initiative scale from informants and FAQ (tau b=-0.591, p<0.001), and it was the only one that remained significant after correcting for multiple testing (p Holm=0.013). Conclusions Cognitive complaints from patients mainly reflect their mood, whilst informant reports mainly reflect both the functional ability and mood of the patients.
