The military conflict between Russia and Georgia, which began on August 8, 2008, marks a precipitous collapse of the Caucasus strategic landscape that has been lingering since the end of the 1990s. Russia`s military moves against Tbilisi, its military position deep in western Georgia, and its subsequent official recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia―two breakaway republics within Georgian territory―as independent states, all declare the return of Russia as the major geopolitical actor in the Caucasus. The five day war killed hundreds of people and caused the worst crisis in Russia`s relations with the West since the end of the Cold War. While no serious analysts would argue that Russia could rival the United States and Europe in the way the former Soviet Union did, the implications of Russia`s incursion into Georgia have already harmed Russian relations with the West, with the West now referring to Russia as the ````destabilizing factor```` in world politics. Furthermore, Russia claims that extending NATO membership to Georgia would amount to an ````insufferable humiliation```` and has hinted that this could very well be the condition under which Russia-NATO ties unravel. Sitting on the sidelines on this particular issue, China watches the struggle between Russia and the West mount. But the lessons it draws from this ongoing confrontation are hardly passive. China, which has been watching this confrontation playing out, is thinking and judging the results.
Tearing of metallic sandwich panels subjected to air shock loading
Zhu, Feng,Lu, Guoxing,Ruan, Dong,Shu, Dong-Wei Techno-Press 2009 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.32 No.2
This paper presents a computational study for the structural response of blast loaded metallic sandwich panels, with the emphasis placed on their failure behaviours. The fully-clamped panels are square, and the honeycomb core and skins are made of the same aluminium alloy. A material model considering strain and strain rate hardening effects is used and the blast load is idealised as either a uniform or localised pressure over a short duration. The deformation/failure procedure and modes of the sandwich panels are identified and analysed. In the uniform loading condition, the effect of core density and face-sheets thicknesses is analysed. Likewise, the influence of pulse shape on the failure modes is investigated by deriving a pressure-impulse (P-I) diagram. For localised loading, a comparative study is carried out to assess the blast resistant behaviours of three types of structures: sandwich panel with honeycomb core, two face-sheets with air core and monolithic plate, in terms of their permanent deflections and damage degrees. The finding of this research provides a valuable insight into the engineering design of sandwich constructions against air blast loads.
Identification of BmELP as an interaction partner of Bmtutl-519 in the silkworm, Bombyx mori
Zhu Feng,Gao Jianhua,Qiao Keyuan,Xiao Shengyan,Bai Xingrong,Kang Meiling,Ming Dongfeng 한국응용곤충학회 2021 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.24 No.3
The Turtle protein could act as a signaling receptor or function as a membrane-bound ligand for an unknown receptor. Alternatively, the Turtle protein could function as a co-receptor in a multi-protein receptor complex. Earlier work on the function of Bmtutl-519 suggested that it may act as a cell surface receptor or as a regulatory factor in the infection process of Nosema bombycis. To further investigate the function of Bmtutl-519 in the process of microsporidian infection and the possible regulatory pathways involved, we performed yeast twohybrid screening on a silkworm midgut cDNA library and identified a Bombyx mori extensin-like protein/ BmELP as a binding partner of Bmtutl-519. The interaction between Bmtutl-519 and BmELP was verified by GST pull-down and co-immunoprecipitation assays. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis showed that BmELP was commonly expressed in all of the examined tissues of the silkworm, and the expression was highest in the head. Moreover, BmELP was expressed throughout the entire development period, and the lowest levels of expression were observed at the egg stage. The results of infection experiments showed that N. bombycis infection caused the upregulation of BmELP expression, especially in vitro. Taken together, our findings may provide new insights into the roles of BmELP and Bmtutl-519 in microsporidian infection.

<P>In order to exploit the 430-cavity in the active sites of neuraminidases, 22 zanamivir analogs with C-1 and C-4 modification were synthesized, and their inhibitory activities against both group-1 (H5N1, H1N1) and group-2 neuraminidases (H3N2) were determined. Compound <B>9f</B> exerts the most potency, with IC50 value of 0.013, 0.001, and 0.09 μM against H3N2, H5N1, and H1N1, which is similar to that of zanamivir (H3N2 IC50 = 0.0014 μM, H5N1 IC50 = 0.012 μM, H1N1 IC50 = 0.001 μM). Pharmacokinetic studies of compound <B>9f</B> in rats showed a much longer plasma half-life (<I>t</I>1/2) than that of zanamivir following administration (po dose). Molecular modeling provided information about the binding model between the new inhibitors and neuraminidase, with the elongated groups at the C-1-position being projected toward the 430-loop region. This study may represent a novel starting point for the future development of improved antiflu agents.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jmcmar/2013/jmcmar.2013.56.issue-3/jm3009713/production/images/medium/jm-2012-009713_0009.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/jm3009713'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
Enhanced Robust Cooperative Spectrum Sensing in Cognitive Radio
Zhu, Feng,Seo, Seung-Woo The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2009 Journal of communications and networks Vol.11 No.2
As wireless spectrum resources become more scarce while some portions of frequency bands suffer from low utilization, the design of cognitive radio (CR) has recently been urged, which allows opportunistic usage of licensed bands for secondary users without interference with primary users. Spectrum sensing is fundamental for a secondary user to find a specific available spectrum hole. Cooperative spectrum sensing is more accurate and more widely used since it obtains helpful reports from nodes in different locations. However, if some nodes are compromised and report false sensing data to the fusion center on purpose, the accuracy of decisions made by the fusion center can be heavily impaired. Weighted sequential probability ratio test (WSPRT), based on a credit evaluation system to restrict damage caused by malicious nodes, was proposed to address such a spectrum sensing data falsification (SSDF) attack at the price of introducing four times more sampling numbers. In this paper, we propose two new schemes, named enhanced weighted sequential probability ratio test (EWSPRT) and enhanced weighted sequential zero/one test (EWSZOT), which are robust against SSDF attack. By incorporating a new weight module and a new test module, both schemes have much less sampling numbers than WSPRT. Simulation results show that when holding comparable error rates, the numbers of EWSPRT and EWSZOT are 40% and 75% lower than WSPRT, respectively. We also provide theoretical analysis models to support the performance improvement estimates of the new schemes.

Twenty novel tetramic acid derivatives (E)-3-(1-(alkyloxyamino)ethylidene)-1-alkylpyrrolidine-2,4-diones were synthesized by the reaction of 3-(1-hydroxyethylidene)pyrrolidine-2,4-diones with O-alkyl hydroxylamines. The title compounds were confirmed by IR, $^1H$ NMR, MS and elemental analysis. The structure of compound 6r was further verified by X-ray diffraction crystallography. The bioassays showed that most of the title compounds exhibited noticeable herbicidal and fungicidal activities.
