        Grouting compactness monitoring of concrete-filled steel tube arch bridge model using piezoceramic-based transducers

        The load-carrying capacity and structural behavior of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) structures is highly influenced by the grouting compactness in the steel tube. Due to the invisibility of the grout in the steel tube, monitoring of the grouting progress in such a structure is still a challenge. This paper develops an active sensing approach with combined piezoceramic-based smart aggregates (SA) and piezoceramic patches to monitor the grouting compactness of CFST bridge structure. A small-scale steel specimen was designed and fabricated to simulate CFST bridge structure in this research. Before casting, four SAs and two piezoceramic patches were installed in the pre-determined locations of the specimen. In the active sensing approach, selected SAs were utilized as actuators to generate designed stress waves, which were detected by other SAs or piezoceramic patch sensors. Since concrete functions as a wave conduit, the stress wave response can be only detected when the wave path between the actuator and the sensor is filled with concrete. For the sake of monitoring the grouting progress, the steel tube specimen was grouted in four stages, and each stage held three days for cement drying. Experimental results show that the received sensor signals in time domain clearly indicate the change of the signal amplitude before and after the wave path is filled with concrete. Further, a wavelet packet-based energy index matrix (WPEIM) was developed to compute signal energy of the received signals. The computed signal energies of the sensors shown in the WPEIM demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method in the monitoring of the grouting progress.

      • The ERCC1 C118T Polymorphism Predicts Clinical Outcomes of Colorectal Cancer Patients Receiving Oxaliplatin-Based Chemotherapy: a Meta-analysis Based on 22 Studies

        Background: Although the predictive value of the excision repair cross-complementing group 1 (ERCC1) C118T polymorphism in clinical outcomes of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) receiving oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy has been evaluated in numerous published studies, the conclusions are conflicting. Therefore, we performed the present meta-analysis to determine the precise role of the ERCC1 C118T polymorphism in this clinical situation and help optimize individual chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: A multiple search strategy was used to identify eligible studies. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to estimate objective response and oxaliplatin-induced toxicity, with hazard ratios (HRs) with 95%CIs for progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Results: A total of 22 studies including 2,846 CRC patients were eligible in the analysis. Overall, no significant correlation was found between the ERCC1 C118T polymorphism and objective response to oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy, in all patients or in the Asian and Caucasian subgroups. However, the pooled analysis showed that the PFS and OS were significantly shorter in patients who carried T/T or T/C genotypes of ERCC1 C118T as compared to the C/C genotype. On stratified analysis by ethnicity, the ERCC1 118T allele was associated with a favorable prognosis in Caucasians (PFS, HR=0.58, 95%CI: 0.24-1.44; OS, HR=0.38, 95%CI: 0.22-0.64) but an unfavorable prognosis in Asians (PFS, HR=2.49, 95%CI: 1.87-3.33; OS, HR=2.63, 95%CI: 1.87-3.69) based on a dominant model. In addition, we failed to find a statistically significant impact of ERCC1 C118T polymorphism on oxaliplatin-induced toxicity. Conclusions: The ERCC1 C118T polymorphism may have prognostic value in patients with CRC undergoing oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy.

      • CARC: A Reliable Routing Mechanism for Cognitive Ad Hoc Networks

        In cognitive radio Ad Hoc networks, the events of node failure and link failure maybe happen frequently, especially the primary users will access the authorized channel whenever possible. In order to maintain the connection between cognitive users and resume their communication as soon as possible when the current route is invalid, a reliable routing mechanism CARC is proposed, which employs primary and candidate route to communicate under differential cases. Meanwhile, how to choose candidate route, maintain or rebuild route are also elaborated. Numerical simulations show that the proposed CARC protocol has a higher performance compared with other typical protocols.

        Cetirizine Dihydrochloride Loaded Microparticles Design Using Ionotropic Cross-linked Chitosan Nanoparticles by Spray-drying Method

        To control the release rate and mask the bitter taste, cetirizine dihydrochloride (CedH) was entrapped within chitosan nanoparticles (CS-NPs) using an ionotropic gelation process, followed by microencapsulation to produce CS matrix microparticles using a spray-drying method. The aqueous colloidal CS-NPs dispersions with a drug encapsulation efficiency (EE) of <15%, were then spray dried to produce a powdered nanoparticles-in-microparticles system with an EE of >70%. The resultant spherical CS microparticles had a smooth surface, were free of organic solvent residue and showed a diameter range of 0.5~5 μm. The in vitro drug release properties of CedH encapsulated microparticles showed an initial burst effect during the first 2 h. Drug release from the matrix CS microparticles could be retarded by the crosslinking agent pentasodium tripolyphosphate or the wall material. The technique of ‘ionotropic gelation’ combined with ‘spray-drying’ could be applicable for preparation of CS nanoparticlesin-microparticles drug delivery systems. CS-NPs based microparticles might provide a potential micro-carrier for oral administration of the freely water-soluble drug - CedH.

        Saroclazines A–C, thio-diketopiperazines from mangrove-derived fungi Sarocladium kiliense HDN11-84

        Three new diketopiperazine derivatives (DKPs), saroclazines A–C (1–3) along with three known DKPs (4– 6) were isolated from mangrove-derived fungi Sarocladium kiliense HDN11-84. Saroclazines A–B (1 and 2) possessed a free amide structure, which was first found in sulfurcontaining aromatic DKPs. Their structures were elucidated by NMR, HRESIMS and X-ray. The cytotoxic activity of new compounds (1–3) was tested against HeLa cell lines, among which compound 2 showed an IC50 value of 4.2 lM.

      • The XPD Lys751Gln Polymorphism has Predictive Value in Colorectal Cancer Patients Receiving Oxaliplatin-Based Chemotherapy: a Systemic Review and Meta-analysis

        Background: The predictive value of the xeroderma pigmentosum group D (XPD) Lys751Gln polymorphism regarding clinical outcomes of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) receiving oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy has been evaluated in numerous published studies, but the results remain inconclusive. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to determine the precise role of the XPD Lys751Gln polymorphism in this clinical situation and optimize individual chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: A multiple search strategy was used to identify eligible studies. Pooled odds ratios (ORs), generalized odds ratio (ORG) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to estimate the objective response, while hazard ratios (HRs) with 95%CIs were used for progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Results: A total of 17 studies including 2,286 patients met the inclusion criteria. Overall, the XPD 751Gln allele was associated with a non-significant reduced objective response to oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy in all patients or in the Asian and Caucasian subgroups. However, poor PFS and OS of CRC patients treated with oxaliplatin-based regimens were significantly related to the XPD 751Gln allele in the dominant model (PFS: HR=2.10, 95%CI: 1.65-2.67; OS: HR=3.18, 95%CI: 1.57-6.47). On stratified analysis by ethnicity, these relationships were more pronounced in Asians (PFS: HR=2.49, 95%CI: 1.79-3.47; OS: HR=5.25, 95%CI: 3.46-7.94) than in Caucasians (PFS: HR=1.73, 95%CI: 1.22-2.46; OS: HR=1.78, 95%CI: 1.06-2.99). Conclusions: The XPD Lys751Gln polymorphism may have prognostic value in patients with CRC undergoing oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy.

        Soil and ribbed concrete slab interface modeling using large shear box and 3D FEM

        Cast in situ and grouted concrete helical piles with 150-200 mm diameter half cylindrical ribs have become an economical and effective choice in Shanghai, China for uplift piles in deep soft soils. Though this type of pile has been successful used in practice, the reinforcing mechanism and the contribution of the ribs to the total resistance is not clear, and there is no clear guideline for the design of such piles. To study the inclusion of ribs to the contribution of shear resistance, the shear behaviour between silty sand and concrete slabs with parallel ribs at different spacing and angles were tested in a large direct shear box ($600mm{\times}400mm{\times}200mm$). The front panels of the shear box are detachable to observe the soil deformation after the test. The tests were modelled with three-dimensional finite element method in ABAQUS. It was found that, passive zones can be developed ahead of the ribs to form undulated failure surfaces. The shear resistance and failure mode are affected by the ratio of rib spacing to rib diameter. Based on the shape and continuity of the failure zones at the interface, the failure modes at the interface can be classified as "punching", "local" or "general" shear failure respectively. With the inclusion of the ribs, the pull out resistance can increase up to 17%. The optimum rib spacing to rib diameter ratio was found to be around 7 based on the observed experimental results and the numerical modelling.

        A Pore Size Distribution-Based Microscopic Model for Evaluatingthe Permeability of Clay

        This work aimed to propose a semi-empirical model that predicts the permeability of saturated clay using the data of mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). First, the pore size distribution (PSD) curve obtained from an MIP test was regarded as a discrete probability function of pore diameters; thus, its shape could be characterized by probability parameters (e.g., the expected value and the standard deviation). Subsequently, these probability parameters, combined with the microporosity calculated from the volume of intruded mercury, were correlated with the permeability of clay based on Hagen-Poiseuille's equation. Next, the performance of the proposed permeability model was verified using data reported in the literature. Thereafter, the model was applied to estimate the permeability of normally consolidated (NC) and overconsolidated (OC) kaolin subjected to various triaxial loading. The results highlighted that the proposed model is capable of characterizing the sensitive variation of kaolin permeability under different overconsolidation ratios (OCRs), stress paths, and stress levels.

        Prevalence and Genetic Characterization of Toxoplasma gondii in Pet Dogs in Central China

        The prevalence and genotype of Toxoplasma gondii infection in dogs in Henan Province, Central China was investigated. A total of 125 blood samples were collected from pet dogs during April to June 2013, and all samples were examined by indirect hemagglutination antibody test (IHA) and nested PCR. The overall T. gondii prevalence in pet dogs was 24.0% (30/125), with 20.8% (26/125) in IHA and 10.4% (13/125) in PCR, respectively. No statistical associations were found between animal gender and age and the prevalence of T. gondii infection. Thirteen positive DNA samples were genotyped using 11 PCR-RFLP markers, including SAG1, (3’+5’) SAG2, alt.SAG2, SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, c22-8, c29- 2, L358, PK1, and Apico. Of these, only 2 samples were genotyped with complete data for all loci, and a novel genotype (type III at SAG3 and GRA6 loci, and type I at other loci) was identified. This is the first report of genetic characterization of T. gondii infection in dogs in China.
