W.B. Yeats, Frank Fay, and the Art of Stage Management

Matthew Fay 한국예이츠학회 2022 한국예이츠 저널 Vol.69 No.-

This paper will explore the influence of the brothers Frank Fay (1870-1931) and Willie Fay (1872-1947) on the development of Yeats’s drama. Frank and Willie Fay’s various amateur theater companies of the 1890s gave rise to the Irish National Theatre Society (1902), out of which grew the first Abbey Company. While the brothers’ role in founding the Abbey Theatre is uncontested, their reputation has depended on the narratives of literary and theatrical history written by others, often with their own agendas. Foremost among these is W.B. Yeats, who wrote in his speech to the Swedish Academy in 1923 of ‘our two best men actors … one a stage-struck solicitor’s clerk and the other a working man who had toured Ireland in a theatrical company managed by a Negro.’ (CW3 413). These patronizing words have had a disproportionate influence on subsequent critical evaluations of the Fays. This paper therefore hopes to reinstate the Fays within the literary milieu in Dublin, through scrutiny of the Abbey Theatre archive and Frank Fay’s own archive of letters and unpublished lectures.

Evidence of Subclavian Vein Thrombosis on First-Pass 18FDG PET in a Patient with Relapsing Upper Mediastinum Lymphoma

        Fayçal Ben Bouallègue,Fabien Vauchot,Denis Mariano-Goulart 대한핵의학회 2018 핵의학 분자영상 Vol.52 No.5

Baseline 18F-FDG PET was performed in a 74-year-old patient with relapsing upper mediastinum lymphoma. Left subclavianthrombosis was suspected on prior contrast-enhanced CT. Dynamic PET imaging was achieved during 3 min after IV injection of18F-FDG to the left arm in order to further assess left subclavian vein permeability. The 20-s dynamic frame at 1 min afterinjection confirmed the absence of flow in the left subclavian vein and evidenced the derivation of 18F-FDG through left axillary, then superficial, then right internal mammary collaterals to the superior vena cava, hence confirming the subclavian thrombosis.

Robust H∞ Sliding Mode Observer Design for Fault Estimation in a Class of Uncertain Nonlinear Systems with LMI Optimization Approach

Slim Dhahri,Anis Sellami,Fayçal Ben Hmida 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2012 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.10 No.5

This paper presents a new approach for the design of robust H∞ sliding mode observer (SMO) for a class of Lipschitz nonlinear systems where both faults and uncertainties are considered. A sufficient condition using linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization is derived to guarantee the asymptotically stability of the estimation error dynamics and compute the observer gains. A fault estimation scheme is presented where the estimation signal can approximate the fault to some degree of accuracy. Our design approach has some advantages. The Lipschitz constant of the nonlinear term in the system and the disturbance attenuation level are maximized simultaneously through convex multiobjective optimization. For this reason, the Lipschitz constant is suitable to a large class of uncertain nonlinear systems. Moreover, the fault estimation is much more robust against disturbances and nonlinear uncertainty and can preserve the fault signal shape effectively. Finally, a simulation study on a robotic arm system is presented to show the effectiveness of this approach.

Elastofibroma Dorsi: Clinicopathological Analysis of 76 Cases

Massine El Hammoumi,Abderrahim Qtaibi,Adil Arsalane,Fayçal El Oueriachi,El Hassane Kabiri 대한흉부외과학회 2014 Journal of Chest Surgery (J Chest Surg) Vol.47 No.2

Background: We aimed to investigate the epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical, and treatment aspects of elastofibroma dorsi through a retrospective study of 76 patients who underwent surgery between January 2008 and December 2012 in our department. Methods: Our study is retrospective between January 2008 and December 2012. We admitted 79 patients with a subscapular mass, and only 76 patients had ED. The others (n=2) had high associated risk of anesthesia and were managed by a medical treatment and one patient had a subscapular sclerotic hemangioma. Results: The average age of the patients was 49 years (range, 38 to 70 years), with a female predominance (54 females and 22 males). Subscapular location was constant. The right, left, and bilateral form was noted in 41, 15 and 20 cases, respectively. The diagnosis was clinical in 60 cases. Ultrasound and computerized tomography scans confirmed the diagnosis of an ill-defined mass in a subscapular location in all cases. Surgical treatment consisted of complete resection of the mass. The clinical diameter of the mass remained significantly lower than that of the surgical specimen (7 cm versus 12 cm) because the major hidden part of the mass in the subscapular area was inaccessible to palpation. Complications were noted in 9 cases (11.8%), seroma in 8 cases (10.5%), infection of wound site in 4 cases (5%), and parietal textilome in one case (1%). No case of recurrence was noted. Conclusion: Surgery of elastofibroma is unique because of the subscapular location of the parietal tumor, whose histological fibrous nature makes it very adherent to the chest wall.

Lessons from Yeast on Emerging Roles of the ATAD2 Protein Family in Gene Regulation and Genome Organization

        Matteo Cattaneo,Yuichi Morozumi,Daniel Perazza,Fayçal Boussouar,Mahya Jamshidikia,Sophie Rousseaux,André Verdel,Saadi Khochbin 한국분자세포생물학회 2014 Molecules and cells Vol.37 No.12

ATAD2, a remarkably conserved, yet poorly characterized factor is found upregulated and associated with poor prognosis in a variety of independent cancers in human. Studies conducted on the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATAD2 homologue, Yta7, are now indicating that the members of this family may primarily be regulators of chromatin dynamics and that their action on gene expression could only be one facet of their general activity. In this review, we present an overview of the literature on Yta7 and discuss the possibility of translating these findings into other organisms to further define the involvement of ATAD2 and other members of its family in regulating chromatin structure and function both in normal and pathological situations.

Robust Fault Tolerant Control Design for Nonlinear Systems not Satisfying Matching and Minimum Phase Conditions

        Riadh Hmidi,Ali Ben Brahim,Fayçal Ben Hmida,Anis Sellami 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2020 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.18 No.9

This paper proposes an adaptive sliding mode fault tolerant control design for lipschitz nonlinear system subject to simultaneous actuator and sensor faults. First, in order to estimate the system states, actuator and sensor faults, only one observer with an adaptive nonlinear gain is required where the minimum phase condition is relaxed to delectability and the matching condition is weakened to become a condition related to the system dimensions. Furthermore, our approach is applicable where there are faults greater than outputs. Next, a virtual sensor technique is developed to replace a failed, missing or corrupted sensor to provide a signal having the same effect of the nominal sensor. Then, this study provides an adaptive sliding mode fault tolerant control to achieve an optimal interaction between observer, virtual sensor and controller models. Thus, using the LMI technique with multiobjective optimization performance, sufficient conditions are derived to ensure the closed-loop Lipschitz nonlinear system stability and guarantee that the Lipschitz set of the adaptive sliding mode observer is a subset of the adaptive sliding mode control Lipschitz set. Two illustrative examples the first is the robotic manipulator model and the second is the longitudinal dynamics of the following vehicle system were performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed Approach.

ANN Modeling of a Smart MEMS-based Capacitive Humidity Sensor

        Kouda Souhil,Dibi Zohir,Barra Samir,Dendouga Abdelghani,Meddour Fayçal 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2011 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.9 No.1

This paper presents a design of a smart humidity sensor. First we begin by the modeling of a Capacitive MEMS-based humidity sensor. Using neuronal networks and Matlab environment to accu-rately express the non-linearity, the hysteresis effect and the cross sensitivity of the output humidity sensor used. We have done the training to create an analytical model CHS ‘Capacitive Humidity Sen-sor’. Because our sensor is a capacitive type, the obtained model on PSPICE reflects the humidity variation by a capacity variation, which is a passive magnitude; it requires a conversion to an active magnitude, why we realize a conversion capacity/voltage using a switched capacitor circuit SCC. In a second step a linearization, by Matlab program, is applied to CHS response whose goal is to create a database for an element of correction ‘CORRECTOR’. After that we use the bias matrix and the weights matrix obtained by training to establish the CHS model and the CORRECTOR model on PSPICE simulator, where the output of the first is identical to the output of the CHS and the last cor-rect its nonlinear response, and eliminate its hysteresis effect and cross sensitivity. The three blocks; CHS model, CORRECTOR model and the capacity/voltage converter, represent the smart sensor.

Incidents and Complications of Permanent Venous Central Access Systems: A Series of 1,460 Cases

        Massine El Hammoumi,Mohammed El Ouazni,Adil Arsalane,Fayçal El Oueriachi,Hamid Mansouri,El Hassane Kabiri 대한흉부외과학회 2014 Journal of Chest Surgery (J Chest Surg) Vol.47 No.2

Background: Implanted venous access devices or permanent central venous access systems (PCVASs) are routinely used in oncologic patients. Complications can occur during the implantation or use of such devices. We describe such complications of the PCVAS and their management. Methods: Our retrospective study included 1,460 cases in which PCVAS was implanted in the 11 years between January 2002 and January 2013, including 810 women and 650 men with an average age of 45.2 years. We used polyurethane or silicone catheters. The site of insertion and the surgical or percutaneous procedure were selected on the basis of clinical data and disease information. The subclavian and cephalic veins were our most common sites of insertion. Results: About 1,100 cases (75%) underwent surgery by training surgeons and 360 patients by expert surgeons. Perioperative incidents occurred in 33% and 12% of these patients, respectively. Incidents (28%) included technical difficulties (n=64), a subcutaneous hematoma (n=37), pneumothoraces (n=15), and an intrapleural catheter (n=1). Complications in the short and medium term were present in 14.2% of the cases. Distortion and rupture of the catheter (n=5) were noted in the costoclavicular area (pinch-off syndrome). There were 5 cases of catheter migration into the jugular vein (n=1), superior vena cava (n=1), and heart cavities (n=3). No patient died of PCVAS insertion or complication. Conclusion: PCVAS complications should be diagnosed early and treated with probable removal of this material for preventing any life-threatening outcome associated with complicated PVCAS.

Assessment of the cytotoxic activity and the reduction power of Limoniastrum feei Girard (Batt.): a medicinal plant from Algerian Sahara

Imad Abdelhamid El Haci,Wissame Mazari,Fawzia Atik-Bekkara,Fayçal Hassani,Mohamed Gherib 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2017 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.17 No.2

This scientific work involves a phytochemical study of a medicinal plant endemic to the south of Algeria: Limoniatrum feei Girard (Batt.). The study of the antioxidant effects and the evaluation of the cytotoxicity were reported. Polar organic extracts: methanol, ethanol and acetone of L. feei presented considerable levels of phenols and flavonoids. These levels were ranged from 127.07 to 262.11 mg GAE/g and 84 to 157.88 mg CEQ/g, respectively. Considerable antioxidant activity of polar organic extracts of L. feei was revealed. In the DPPH scavenging method, methanolic extract expressed an IC50 of about 3.2 μg/mL which is comparable to that of the ascorbic acid (2.48 μg/mL). The same extract expressed strong antioxidant power against hydroxyl radical with an IC50 of about 36.33 μg/mL, which is higher than that of the ascorbic acid (61.83 μg/mL). In the test of the β-carotene bleaching, acetone extract expressed a remarkable antioxidant power comparable to the positive control (IC50: 5.85 μg/mL and 4.26 μg/mL, respectively). A low cytotoxic activity against human red blood cells was exerced by the methanol extract of L. feei, this could explaine the safety uses of this plant by indigenous populations.
