Mechanical Study on the Effect of Granular Friction in a Granular System under Biaxial Compression

Fan-Jing Meng,Kun Liu 한국물리학회 2018 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.72 No.10

The in uence of granular friction on the mechanical behaviors of a granular system is a typical research realm that is still not yet fully understood because of the complexities and the discreteness of the granular system. In this study, a two-dimensional model of a granular system with biaxial compression is established by using the discrete element method (DEM). Using this DEM model, we investigate the macroscopic mechanical behaviors, the microscopic mechanical responses and the force chain distributions of a granular system in uenced by granular friction. Simulation results show that the granular friction has a prominent in uence on the stress-strain response, dilatancy behaviors, and peak strength of the granular system. The microscopic mechanical behaviors of the coordination number, the sliding fraction, and the mean mobilized friction coecient of the granular system are also shown to be markedly in uenced by the granular friction. The force chains in the granular system form an inhomogeneous distribution, and their intensities increase with increasing granular friction.

MICROSTRUCTURAL EFFECTS ON MACROSCALE THERMAL PROPERTIES IN NANOFLUIDS

        JING FAN,LIQIU WANG 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2010 NANO Vol.5 No.2

The recent first-principle model shows that heat conduction in nanofluids can be diffusion-dominant or thermal-wave-dominant depending on their microscale physics (structures, properties and activities). As the first attempt of quantifying when and to what extent thermal waves become important, we numerically examine effects of particle–fluid conductivity ratio, particle shape, volume fraction and nondimensional particle–fluid interfacial area in the unit-cell on macroscale thermal properties for nanofluids consisting of in-line arrays of perfectly dispersed two-dimensional circular, square and hollow particles, respectively. In simple and perfectly dispersed nanofluids, the heat conduction is diffusion-dominant so the effective thermal conductivity can be predicted adequately by the mixture rule with the effect of particle shape and particle–fluid conductivity ratio incorporated into its empirical parameter. Thermal waves appear more likely at smaller particle–fluid conductivity ratio (< 1) and lower particle-volume-fraction, which agrees with the experimentally observed significant conductivity enhancement in the oil-in-water emulsion. The computed thermal conductivity predicts some experimental data in the literature very well and shows the sensitivity to the nondimensional particle–fluid interfacial area in the unit-cell.

Association of a novel antisense lncRNA TP73-AS1 polymorphisms and expression with colorectal cancer susceptibility and prognosis

        Fan Jiayao,Xu Huiqing,Liu Bing,Jing Fangyuan,He Qingfang,Zheng Shasha,Shi Haining,Jiao Lefei,Fan Chunhong 한국유전학회 2022 Genes & Genomics Vol.44 No.7

Background: TP73-AS1 is a novel antisense long noncoding RNA and plays an important role in cell proliferation and cancer development. However, the link between TP73-AS1 and colorectal cancer (CRC) has not yet been reported. Objective: To explore the association of genetic variants in TP73-AS1 and its expression with CRC susceptibility and prognosis. Methods: A case-control study (including 507 CRC cases and 503 controls) and bioinformatics analysis were conducted. Results: rs9800 polymorphism was significantly related to higher risk in CRC [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.33, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.02-1.75, P = 0.034 in heterozygote codominant model]. There was no difference between TP73-AS1 polymorphisms and different tumor node metastasis (TNM) stages in the adjusted model. Moreover, TP73-AS1 expression level was positively related to different TNM stages. After adjusted for age, gender and TNM, higher TP73-AS1 expression levels were related to shorter recurrence-free survival time [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.66, 95% CI = 1.02-2.71, P = 0.043]. Conclusion: TP73-AS1 polymorphisms and expression may be associated with susceptibility and prognosis of CRC.

Genetic variation and population structure of the oriental fruit moth Grapholita molesta in Shanxi, a major pome fruits growing region in North China

        Jing Yang,Zhong-Fang Liu,Ji-Qiao Fan,Yu-PengWu,Rui-Yan Ma,Ren-Jun Fan 한국응용곤충학회 2016 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.19 No.4

Grapholitamolesta, commonly known as the oriental fruit moth, is one of the most destructive fruit pests both in China and in other regions of the world. We examined the genetic diversity and population structures of G. molesta populations from 11 locations in a major pome fruit production region (Shanxi province) in North China using seven microsatellite markers and sequence variations in two mitochondrial genes. We found that G.molesta in the studied region exhibited high levels of genetic diversity. Among 271 individual insects examined using microsatellite markers, mean number of alleles ranged from 5.86 to 9.00 with average 8.01. Population structure analysis revealed that populations from the eleven sampling sites formed two clusters without apparent distance isolation. Cluster 1 consisted of eight populations distributed in five regions of the sampling sites, whereas Cluster 2 consisted of three populations distributed in two distant locations of the sampling sites. Genetic exchange analysis revealed that about half of the haplotypes were shared among over 90% individual insects from different regions. Our results indicated that the population structure and genetic exchange of G. molesta in the studied region might have been affected by limited dispersal ability of the insect, environmental condition, colonization history and human-mediated dispersal. These findings should provide useful information for the implementation of area-wide pest management and for further characterization of genetic variation and population structure of this economically important pest.

FORMATION OF NANOLITER BUBBLES IN MICROFLUIDIC T-JUNCTIONS

        JING FAN,YUXIANG ZHANG,LIQIU WANG 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2010 NANO Vol.5 No.3

A numerical study on nanoliter bubble formation process in microfluidic T-junctions is conducted. The simulated bubble sequence agrees well with experiments. The pressure and velocity distribution in liquid phase, and streamlines of relative velocity of liquid to bubbles are obtained. We also studied pressure variation at the junction and gas flow rate for the first several bubbles, and illustrated the special impact of channel width ratio on bubble formation process. Finally, we derived the critical nondimensional gas pressure above which bubbles can be generated.

      • Caffeine ameliorates allergic rhinitis in an ovalbumin-induced murine model

Yan Jing Fan,Eui Hyeog Han,Hyoung Tae Kim,Zhen Nan Yu,Thi Van Nguyen,Juan Jin,Ok Hee Chai,Changho Song 대한체질인류학회 2021 대한체질인류학회 학술대회 연제 초록 Vol.64 No.-

Caffeine is one of the most widely consumed pharmacologically active products worldwide. Caffeine exhibits various pharmacological activities in central nervous, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems. Additionally, caffeine exhibited anti-inflammatory effects in lipopolysaccharide-challenged rats. However, the potential anti-inflammatory activity of caffeine in allergic rhinitis (AR) has not been investigated yet. Therefore, we aimed to examine the anti-allergic effects of caffeine in ovalbumin (OVA)-induced AR mice in this study. Briefly, BALB/c mice were sensitized and challenged with OVA. Caffeine (5, 10, 20 mg/kg) and dexamethasone (Dex, 2.5 mg/kg) were treated by intranasal instillation of 20 µL/nasal cavity for 13 days. In this study, caffeine attenuated the nasal symptoms, including rubbing and sneezing. Caffeine ameliorated the inflammation in the lungs. In addition, caffeine reduced the thickness of the nasal mucosa, alleviated goblet cell hyperplasia and reduced mast cell recruitment in the nasal mucosa. Caffeine decreased OVA-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) E and IgG1 levels in the serum, whereas increased the level of OVA-specific IgG2a. Caffeine also reduced T helper (Th) 2 cytokines (interleukin(IL)-4, IL-5 and IL-13) and Th17 family related factors (IL-17, IL-6, retinoic-related orphan receptor gamma, signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 and phospho-signal transducer and activator of transcription-3) levels and elevated Th1 cytokines (IL-12 and interferon gamma) levels in the nasal lavage fluid. However, the level of malondialdehyde was down-regulated, the levels of superoxide dismutase, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 and heme oxygenase-1 were up-regulated in the caffeine treatment. Collectively, we suggest that caffeine might have therapeutic effects on AR.

Caffeine (1, 3, 7-trimethylxanthine) is one of the most widely consumed pharmacologically active products worldwide. Caffeine exhibits various pharmacological activities in central nervous, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems. Additionally, caffeine exhibited anti-inflammatory effects in lipopolysaccharide-challenged rats. However, to our knowledge, the potential anti-inflammatory activity of caffeine in allergic rhinitis (AR) has not yet been investigated. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to examine the anti-allergic effects of caffeine in ovalbumin (OVA)-induced AR in mice.
